With so many pieces of the Jackrabbit puzzle returning and what might turn out to be a fantastic recruiting class, next year should be the best year that SDSU wrestling has ever had. I keep running through scenarios in my head, so I thought that it would be useful to me and to others to put everything down on paper. 125: Josh Portillo / Connor Brown Both of the Portillo brothers came in a little undersized but Josh seems to be a little bigger and as a result he did a little better this past year. He struggled early on but he seemed to step it up later in the year beating out Kris Williams of Nebraska. I've been watching some film on Brown and I don't really like what I see. He wrestles with arrogance and he's kind of a junker; he seems like the kind of guy who doesn't work out in a college room. But, then again, Bono probably know more than I do so maybe he'll be fine. I expect this to be a hard weight for us but it should get better as the year goes on and the starter gets some seasoning. It would be awesome if Andrade could make the cut again, but I don't see it happening. 133: Seth Gross I've been seeing a lot more of him in the spotlight as he seems to be pushed into a lot of interviews lately. This is good for the program as a recruiting tool but I hope it doesn't wear on him too much. It should go without saying that he will score bonus most matches and he should have a shot at at title. He and Schopp getting together was the best thing that ever happened to either of them. 141: Henry Pohlmeyer or Zeke Andrade Pohlmeyer is young yet and he has some room to grow, but he has great intensity and I'm expecting him to continue to get better next year. Andrade wrestled very well at times last year beating some good guys, but he was overpowered at times. He either needs to drop to 125 or bulk up into a good sized 141; he has a lot of talent, it would be a shame to see him stuck between weights again. Either one of these guys should be over .500 and should show flashes of real talent but I don't expect a qualifier out of this weight. 149: Too many to list Prieto is probably the front-runner here as he is the only natural 149 in the room. I could see Pohlmeyer or Firtzgerald going up in weight if Andrade cements himself as the 141. I could also see Holler or Carlson coming down if Peterson is locked in at 157 and they can cut the weight. If Holler can and will make the cut, this will be a very strong weight for them with a likely national qualifier, otherwise I expect the Jacks to lose more than they win at 149. 157: Logan Peterson or Colin Holler Holler is a good wrestler when he wrestles, but he does tend to be held out for injuries. If he wrestles, he can be a national qualifier wherever he goes. Peterson is also a very solid wrestler who deserves a shot and I could see him winning the spot if he continues to grow like he has every year since being in Brookings. Colton Carlson and Brett Bye have also had good results and could fit in somewhere. I expect a qualifier out of this spot no matter who wins it. 165: Luke Zilverberg Zilverberg has what it takes to be an all-American if he gets the right draw and he's on the top of his game. He's gotten considerable better every year and he should be a reliable win for the Jacks in most duels. 174: David Kocer or Brady Ayers I would personally like to see Ayers drop down to 174 if he can to allow Kocer to redshirt. Ayers had a very good redshirt year and I'd hate to see his talents wasted splitting time at 184. Redshirting Kocer helps slow the bleeding that goes along with graduating five starters next year. If Kocer doesn't redshirt, he should be expected to be a round of 12 or low AA type of guy, where Ayers should qualify and might win a match or two. 184: Martin Mueller or Brady Ayers Mueller is good and he can do well but he has a tendancy to break easily and get in his own way. Ayers doesn't have as much ability as Mueller, but he's tougher and wont give up points as easily. Either one of these guys should be a borderline national qualifier at 184 and should win more than they lose in a conference that is weak at this weight. 197: Nate Rotert It should be obvious to everyone that Rotert has the ability to place at nationals. When he's at his best, he has the skill to be a top five 197 but he's often injured and he doesn't seem to be consistent with his attacking mentality. I see him finally putting it together and getting on the podium this year. 285: Alex Macki or Black Wolters Macki has gotten just a little better every year. He wrestles with great heart but he just doesn't seem to he the technique, physical characteristics or confidence to really get to that next level. Wolters seemed like your typical fat guy heavyweight who didn't have the athleticism to compete against solid DI 285s but he improved a lot as the year went on and now I'm wondering if he couldn't crack the starting line-up. This is going to be weak weight for them any way that you slice it just as it has been since Everard left, but there are a few teams in the Big 12 who struggle at this weight so there will be some opportunities for duel wins here. In the Big XII: As is usually the case, Okie State will be unmatched in the conference next year. The fight for 2nd will include SDSU, NDSU, and Wyoming. Wyoming will be healthy and they should be better at every weight then this past year. NDSU will be solid next year as Bianchi and Steibral and good replacements for Rodriguez and Tynan. Bengtson will also be back without Kocer's top game to continue to vex him. Oklahoma will be a non-issue unless they pull some red-shirts, West Virginia will take a step back, Utah Valley, Air Force and Northern Colorado will continue to grow but shouldn't be real threats, and Iowa State... well Dresser's got his work cut out for him there. I would expect SDSU to land at #2 or #3 in the conference with Wyoming being their stiffest competition outside of Okie State. Redshirting: As I mentioned their top recruit Connor Brown isn't someone I'm super high on, but he is a four time state champ from Missouri so I'm excited to see how he does. Rylee Molitor showed some chinks in his Armour this past year, but he has the potential to do well, the same could be said for Sam Grove, these are two wrestlers who I think could gain a lot from being in the room at SDSU and I think that they have some upside. Hunter Shelton from Missouri is a 4X finalist who has a good attacking, grinding style on the feet, it will be interesting to see how he handles college-level scrambing. Elias Vaoifi is another finalist from MO who is a good athlete and is super smooth, it will be fun to see how he does as well. They also added a bunch of above-average wrestlers from South Dakota who should provide some depth. Coaching: Bono continue to push to program to new horizons with his vision and administrative skills along with his recruiting. We are also starting to see Schopp and Reader take on a lot of responsibility as they handle a lot of media interaction, scheduling, and technique demonstration. I'm beginning to worry about retaining these coaches being that they are both from far away and would both make good head assistants somewhere. I think that the next step for them is to look at bringing in a grad assistant or two and maybe switching up their volunteer assistant. The need a heavyweight coach if they are ever going to start attracting good big guys. I'd love to see them pick up one of the great 285s in Minnesota and bring them to Brookings to serve as a practice partner and help with recruiting. Kroells might consider going to Brookings to get his masters in engineering as they have a very good program. Even someone like Longedyke, Goergen, or one of the Wilsons would be helpful with bringing in big guys and coaching them up. Recruiting: SDSU has needed a good 285 for a long time and this is something that they should prioritize. Tyler Curd from Missouri and Nash Hutmacher from Sioux Falls are people that they need to look at for the future but someone like Trent Eischens or Brandon Frankfurth could help stop the calamity for a few years until they can get them in place. I also think that they need to bring in another 165-174 pounder to replace Kocer and Zilverberg. Klapprodt is going to work out and Brett Bye will do in a pinch but I'd like to see them bring in a big name recruit in that weight range. Important events: The Daktronics open is always something that I circle on my calendar; this event this allow us to see the improvement that they've made over the summer and the level of recruits that they've brought in. Midlands will also provide them with a good measuring stick. Duels versus Wyoming and NDSU will have important big XII implications and I think that the have an outside shot at beating Minnesota this coming season if the line-ups land the right way. I also hope that they wrestle Iowa again this coming season, considering the line-ups, SDSU should have a much more competitive duel. |

You won't be seeing Holler. He was dismissed from the team a while after the Pentagon duals. Sounds like the team is better off without him from my understanding. |

I actually don't expect SDSU to be better as a dual team. That's not to say they won't still be a good top 20 team, but I mainly attribute it to the hole at 149. Plus if D Kocer does redshirt, that is a sizable downgrade. Ayers is definitely solid, but he is still a noticeable notch below Kocer. Portillo will probably have better results than Gillette, but I only expect a slight step up next year. Outside of that improvement, I don't see a noticeable improvement anywhere else (141, 157, 184, HWT) in the lineup during duals. As a tournament team though, I do expect SDSU to improve. I think we'll have NaTo and Gross locked into a battle for the 133 title (although the Flo guys have said they wouldn't be shocked to see NaTo back down to 125). I also expect Rotert to AA, even though his late season results have been relatively poor thus far (largely due to injuries). Throw in Zilverberg and Kocer as likely r12 guys (at minimum, and very possibly AAs) and potential improvements from Mueller/Ayers and Carlson, and this team has a ton of NCAA potential (which is part of the reason I wouldn't redshirt D Kocer). If things broke well, 4 AA's with one being a bonus point scoring national champ would have to be a top 10 finish, wouldn't it? Edit: I didn't see Wombat's idea of Pohlmeyer potentially going 149. I still think that is noticeable step down at 149, but not as big as with the other options. However I think that slightly weakens 141, as I'm not an Andrade believer. For some reason I really want Andrade to do well. He's always struggled a little, but I keep seeing flashed a very good wrestling and he has a great mentality. I think he can pull it together if he bulks up. The kid is fearless and he has some skills, he's just missing something. I don't know what it is, but if he finds it he can be good. I'm a little worried about Pohlmeyer going up if he does choose to do that; he's a smaller 141. I think Prieto is probably the guy for better of for worse. |

A name to watch as a 149 is Blake Bietz, an incoming freshman from Parkston, SD. He is a 3x champion with 2 3rd place finishes. Missed his senior season with a knee injury. Would put him at the same level as David Kocer as far as in-state recruit level, and he is far above the other SD recruits in this class. With Lloyd and Robb on the way, I don't think Bono will hesitate to use either Bietz or Hunter Shelton if they are the best option at 149. As far as recruits, I see 5 D1 level kids in state right now. Class of 2018: Nick Casperson 184/197, I hear UNI Carter Lohr 157/165 Class of 2019: Caden Lamer 3x champ, just placed 8th at Virginia Beach, uncle Chad was 3x d2 champ at SDSU Class of 2020: Nash Hutmacher 285 champ as freshman Kellyn March, many national titles and aa, state champion at 106 as freshman. |

Thanks for the wisdom, I didn't know anything about Bietz and following South Dakota high school wrestling can be difficult. I wonder if either Bietz or Shelton can make 149. I've seen Shelton projected there by some, but Bietz was set to wrestle at 160 before the injury so who knows. I do hope that one of them gives it a try, next year will probably be their year to make their mark. |

When you say "far above the other SD recruits in this class" I assume you are referring to the other SD recruits that SDSU got? Otherwise I would say that Waterson and Nelson would probably disagree. |

If Holler isn't coming back, what keeps Zilverberg from going down to 157 which seems like might be a better weight for him? Peterson would be just as comfortable at 165 as him. I'm not sure if Kocer can make 165, but he's always seemed a little small and if he can it allows them to get Zilverberg, Kocer, Ayers and Mueller all in the line-up at the same time. |

New AD wants to hire his guy. Whats the problem? New AD doesn't want to bend over and write things in the coaches contract he's not comfortable with. Whats the problem?\ Just cause we live in Gopherland and have an incompetent AD I wouldn't fault Pitt's new AD for any of the things he's done right off the bat... |

I get what your saying and don't disagree. What I was referring to was multiple reports that the AD only gave Santoro a 15 minute interview before immediately going to the tOSU well. If that is he case, not a good look when dealing with a well respected coach from PA who just coached a champion on the big stage. |
