Cadet FS was 4th.
Junior FS were tied for 3rd after 160 finals, but they didn't have anyone else going in the upper weights, so guessing they dropped to 4th or 5th.

edit: see above :D

The Allar/Dow match was crazy. Jake had the tech on the scoreboard, but the protest changed the score from 12-2 to 9-4 and he ended up losing. Multiple throws in this one.
That put him at a disadvantage in his consi semi match too, looked like he ran out of steam having to come back and wrestle almost immediately. Nice tournament none the less.
It was poorly officiated imo. Allar was still in control and should not of gone upper body with that kind of lead.
First I will say that It was in Jake's hands to re-win the match and he didn't. He was upset because they (the refs) got it wrong. Everybody was surprised by the reversal. They took his headlock points completely away and awarded Dow 2pts for a correct throw and Jake 1pt for coming up on top. The video camera was from the other side and poor but you can still see that Jake threw the headlock and landed on top. The head ref was at a loss because it was a bad call but the rules say you can't protest a challenge. DUMB! Jake injured his shoulder in one of the throws after the match was restarted and that is why he lost the next match and didn't wrestle the 5th place match. He has beaten Carr in simulation matches in a Nebraska elite freestyle camp and was looking forward to that match. I am a big advocate of Freestyle and Greco, but the rules are too subjective and seem to always get worse. In my discussion with the head Referee John. I was told that we needed to know the rules as well as the referees. I said okay how many single leg finishes do you know? He and the other assistant head ref laughed and said we leave that up to the coaches. I pointed out that refereeing and video review depends upon a referee to know what maneuvers they are seeing so they can make a proper judgement call. They don't know what they are seeing to score it properly! We saw many bad calls and inconsistent calls. Especially in the quarter and semifinal matches These same refs are getting up in age and asked to do more. That isn't right! I am not saying that all refs don't know what they are seeing but when you ref for 10 hours a day and your age is somewhere from 50-70, I can see more mistakes being made. Many of the refs were grey haired when we saw them at kids nationals 10 years ago. I am getting older myself turning 50 and not against age. USA wrestling is asking them to do more with less. I don't see many younger guys refereeing. I have made suggestions in the past about increasing the compensation to refs and change the way they get their rankings to help entice college guys who don't wrestle in the summer to ref. It seems to fall on def ears...If you don't go to Fargo i will tell you it appears USA wrestling is doing a great job in getting sponsorship. They have i am guessing 15 major sponsors now. Yet I don't see one of the biggest issues in my opinion being addressed. New referees coming in. Girls wrestling is growing exponentially. with numbers going up I hope this gets addressed.
Cheers,
Larry Allar

Unless you are retired or a teacher, most people can't take off 9 days to ref in Fargo, or use precious and scarce PTO. It is a voluntary job too...I know many would be refs that can't afford to take time off.

As a MN/USA official for over 30 years, I would agree with Larry's comments. I'd also add that a lot of the officiating beyond the local level gets very political and at times petty. I've done a number of national tournaments over the last few years and I'm always amazed at how pompous and self-righteous many of the "top" officials are. Because of that, the highest ranking official on a mat can bully the others into agreeing with his opinion. I will say though that Minnesota guys are the exception (and I mean that seriously).

For such a critical part of the sport, I've always been baffled by the fact that officials are expected to take vacation from their day job and time away from their family to volunteer at an event where you work exceptionally long hours under constant scrutiny (from fans, coaches, and the head officials).

On the flip side, I think reffing freestyle and greco on the local level in Minnesota can be very rewarding. The knowledgeable coaches and parents are appreciative and spending a Saturday on the mat isn't a huge sacrifice.

If it's 2-2 and only 2's are scored then it's least amount of cautions. If cautions are the same then it's last point scored.

Anyone know why Allar didn't compete in greco? I know he is greco stud so it struck me as odd. Hopefully not injury related

Emily Shilson doing so great at 94 cadet and 100 junior, makes her high school season up at 106 even more impressive.

I think Emily Shilson is going on her 2nd year of dominating at both Cadet and JR levels! I think she may be the best female to ever come out of MN, I can't wait to see her at the Olympics!

Minnesota Women's Junior Freestyle All-Americans:

100 Emily Shilson - 1st Place

Shilson had a tough Illinois opponent in the finals. Tied 6-6 in the second period, she threw a headlock for the pin.
