Where are you located? The best suggestion is to join an association. Most if not all associations have a mentoring program where you will go with a veteran official and "learn the ropes" You will do the JV and the varsity official will assist you then you will do the same for them on the Varsity. If you can do middle school please do mat time is huge. Always look professional, get a uniform that fits, have it always tucked in and looking professional. Make all your calls with authority don't hesitate or show any sign of uncertainty. Hustle, never turn your back on the wrestlers when they go out of bounds. Always follow 1 of the wrestlers back and beat him back there. Know the rules because you will get challenged by both parents and coaches that don't know the rules. Realize almost every close call will make 1/2 of gym happy and the other 1/2 upset. You can't make everyone happy especially in regards to close tough calls. But sell it with authority and it is hard to argue. Any other questions feel free to reach out. Also if you are in the metro area we can get you assigned in our group Gold Country otherwise depending where you are located I get you into a group. Rod Frost |

I grew up wrestling in minnesota but the air force has said they wanted me out in Utah. I am apart of the UWOA and have tried to uphold my millitary standards in my wrestling officials uniform. I would like to say thank you for the wise words. I always thought it would be a shame for me not to ask for any advice from great knowledge and experience we have in minnesota. the new out of bounds rules are a little funny to me and from my understanding its going to depend on what each state considers a "foot" |
