We're thankful for all the families who started their path to success this spring!

Continue training, stay in the room, get on the track, and get stronger mentally & physically this summer. Don't stop where you're at right now and feel satisfied, stay at it!

"This is what separate the champs from the chumps, just a little u!!"

To those we will see at our MN Tough Wrestling Camp, eat your Wheaties and arrive in shape! Stay active and loose for summer camps. Our expectation is to train wrestlers and athletes, arrive as one!!

Why should you train before a camp and arrive in shape?

The better shape you're in, the more you'll get out of training. You'll live at the water fountain and thrash can this summer if you're taking it easy on your time off. Start treating your body like an athlete is supposed to. Training is more fun when you arrive in shape and participate with full effort!

The best written demonstration we have that correlates to this is PTW's very own Strength Specialist, Coach Travis Rutt's CORE VALUES of Strength Training:

1) Buy-In, 2) Accountability, 3) Lifestyle

Buy-In:

Athletes need to buy in to what coaches say-Associate the process with success! If the athlete thinks 100 pull-ups every day will win them a state championship, then it will win them a state championship. This also builds mental toughness.

The athlete needs to believe that their training, whatever it is they are doing, will contribute to their advancement in their sport. They need to value their work. This means that the most crucial element to training correctly is to always ensure that the person doing the work clearly understands the value of their training. This emphasizes the why.

Athletes will get way more out of their training if it is a positive process; meaning if they view the workout as a punishment or negatively talking themselves through the workout they are teaching the brain to devalue their work. In the sports world it is hard to constantly value your training because there is no instant gratification, it is delayed until the athlete finally accomplishes their goal. No instant gratification with sports so need to understand the fact that you are training for the future not for the NOW.

Putting value on their work all starts with buying in to their training program and their coaches!

Accountability:

Accountability means answering for your actions and results. This means showing up to your workouts on time, every time. This means giving a great effort every time with a great attitude. This means taking ownership over your training and putting in the extra time that is not on the schedule.

Athletes need to be accountable for themselves. They need to have the integrity and courage to do what is right when its not easy to do what is right. This develops the leadership needed to facilitate a winning culture.

Accountability leads to independence which leads to leadership which leads to a team winning culture!

Lifestyle:

This ties into accountability. These actions go beyond the sports world.

Lifestyle is the biggest predicting factor in performance. There are many new technologies that help athletes train, recover and heal. All of these performance enhancers make small changes to overall performance.

Athletes can have all these adjustments to their training but if they are constantly drinking alcohol, using tobacco, not eating healthy or staying up watching television late into the night, then these minor adjustments from sports performance professionals are not the biggest area of concern.

When the athlete decides to live a lifestyle that aligns with their goals then all the little things start to play significant roles.

There needs to be a relentless pursuit to living the lifestyle conducive to excellence!

...Words of wisdom from a great mind in Coaching!

Thank you Coach Rutt!!

2018 MN Tough Campers will receive Michael Fessler's Latest Best Seller, Icon: The Value of Faith and Wrestling!!

Reviews of his latest best seller:

"Icon is Michael Fessler's best work to date. This is a bold statement considering the magnitude of his other writings, but it's true. Throughout this book Fessler seamlessly blends together the sport of wrestling, psychology, and sound biblical truth. From the first to last page you will be simultaneously challenged and encouraged in both heart and mind.Ultimately, you will desire to be an icon."
Chad Parks, author of the bestseller Game Changing Moves

"I really enjoyed Icon. I especially loved the stories of wrestlers and how they relate wrestling to the Christian faith. It is amazing how wrestling and Christian principles intertwine. By telling stories of wrestling, Michael Fessler makes it easier to grasp what it means to be God's icon."
Joe Russell, Manager of Freestyle Programs at USAWrestling

"Michael Fessler has done it again. Faith is such a personal, spiritual epiphany that one comes to deeply accept. Wrestling is also an extremely personal activity that mirrors the life of faith. Fessler's message is something in which all readers will definitely want to re-evaluate their life's struggles and relation to God."
Dr. Bill Welker, award-winning author of the The Sparrow's Spirit: a Champion Wrestler's Lifetime Reflections on Prayer and Perseverance, and The Wrestling Drill Book.

"As a Christian and former wrestler, reading Icon was very sobering and yet incredibly inspiring. I saw important periods of my past life in the relatable stories of others. My faith was strengthened as I saw retrospectively how God has utilized the amazing sport of wrestling to practically teach me about Him. Most importantly, I better understand a right view of my position and relationship with Jesus: I am called to a life of obedience and abundant joy as an icon of the Most High God."
Chance Leonard, 2017 National Wrestling Hall of Fame (OK Chapter) Medal of Courage Recipient, and Creator and Executive Producer of the documentary film The Price of Legacy: Wrestling with a Dynasty.

About the Author:

Michael Fessler is author of "Faith and Wrestling" and "The Wrestler"; and is a national speaker for the United States Wrestling Foundation (USWF). He has a BA in Biblical and Theological Studies (Bethel University), and an MA in Communications (Concordia University - St. Paul). Fessler lives in Minnesota with his wife and three children.
