well, i'm debating. This is my first year of wrestling and i'm moving up the ranks already. I am enjoying it very much. It has come at a price though, i haven't had a break for a long time with football and all and my body really needs to heal. I was just wondering, should i try freestyle and improve my skills, or should i just weight lift and condition and give my body a chance to heal?

Do both Freestyle and Greco. Hands down, the best kids do all 3 styles.

Do Freestyle and Greco, you will only improve. I am a very firm supporter of Freestyle and greco, I only wish more wrestler in the North were involved!

Up North..... it is that way state wide... numbers drop significantly for Freestyle/Greco. I wish every kids did all 3 styles. In our whole club from K-12th grade, only 3 kids did Free/Greco and over 100 did folk. Very sad.
I wish there were more Greco tourneys and at least one between NP and Natls.
I would also like to see a day long clinic where you learn the new rules etc. in the AM and have a tourney in the PM, scrimmages, as many matches as possible. I would drive to Int. Falls for a format like that.

My two cents is to do both freestyle and greco for the mat time but don't worry about you weight or being the best. You'll get beat by the serious guys at your weight but your body will like eating again and you'll learn new moves and counters that will work for you in folkstyle as well.

If you look at it as the fun season instead of the freestyle/greco season you will have no problems lifting and wrestling with your friends instead of looking at it as competition. If you find that you excel at one of the styles, then go ahead and cut to the weight you want to wrestle at.

I pretty much agree with the dog. There are really only a few tournaments that people will cut any weight for. Some kids will cut a little for the Junior State tournaments but most of them will do nothing more than eat a light dinner the night before weigh-ins. You may want to drop a few pounds for the regional tournaments if you go to them. But the only time people really get serious about dropping some weight is for the National Duals and Fargo. And even then, most kids are not cutting like they do for the HS season. Unless your name is Mustari.

Bottom line...even if you did cut some weight for it you're only going to be doing it about once a month as opposed to the 2-3 times a week like you do for the HS season.

The Doctor I went to told me to use Freestyle for any heeling problems below the waist line and Greco for all of my aches and pains for my upper body.

I can hook you up with my wrestling Doctor if you wish??????

his name is Doctor Chandler :D  :D

The hospital he works at ranges from the UNI dome in the 80's to Fargo N.D. at the the present. If your realy sick he does travel to Vegas and will make house calls in Europe.
In the spring they will sprinkle little rehab sessions around the state and have group meetings Wedsnights at the UofM for those who feel may lose it with out sapport.

My self some say I cannot get enuff help and will be labeled a FREAK for life but I will keep my chin up and tell my self "Dang it, I'm good enuff and ask for a hug from C.W."

The friends you meet alone is worth every moment!!!!!!!!!

Amen unit. I have also been a lucky recipient of Dr. Chandlers medicine. I think my ribs stopped aching in my 30's. Too bad there are not more of them (Dr. C) out there. Wait..... isn't there a Dr. Unit spreading the love in the southern region. Same religion different preacher if I may be so bold.

As far as the original post. Freestyle/ Greco teach a wrestler to be in control of his body at all times. You become constantly aware of your hip and back position.

It (wrestling freestyle) can only make you better it cannot make you worse. I would take that bet any day.

Hypothetically, if you are a 9th grader, wrestle varsity, then wrestle 30-40 matches of freestyle you come back in tenth grade with 11th grade experience, so on so forth. Freestyle is a must!!!

Yes, we have the week long training camps prior to Nationals. You do have to get invited but that's not that hard to do...get a USA card, show up to a tournament...or even just send an email to the Junior Director asking to be invited.

There is a Greco camp and a Freestyle camp. This year both are being held at the same place (Augsburg) but will start on different days.

Did I answer the question you were asking?

Since we're talking about it I'm going to make a plug for USA Wrestling, the national governing body for Wrestling as well as MN/USA Wrestling. The Gophers this weekend had a Cadet or Junior, Freestyle or Greco-Roman All-American at every weight. I believe the same can be said for Okie State. EVERY Minnesota kid that I saw wrestling at the National Duals this weekend (for the Gophers or any other team) in Division I wrestled FS and GR for the Minnesota Storm teams.

I haven't looked at all the other teams but I know Augsburg has a heavy FS and GR flavor to their lineup. MSU-Mankato has plenty as well.

This last summer I watched a cadet wrestler with no freestyle or Greco experience do both. The result was that he is a much better varsity wrestler. In addition to the mat time and new moves he has much more confidence and more respect for the sport. I would strongly suggest that if you really want to get better that this summer you do both.

I think it is going to be harder for clubs to stick threw it with the rule changes. It will be a longer day with no 10 point tech's

Tech's are six points only you have to do it twice.

If you were going to 10 point someone it shouldn't take much longer to do it twice.

Win 2 of 3 periods. You have plenty of matches right now that are going 6 minutes that will now only go 4.
A pin is still a pin so that changes nothing.

powermad...have you seen the new rules in person? Have you really gone through them? I have. I think the majority of the people are going to really like them once they have experienced them. I love them...yet when they first talked about them I hated them as well. Granted there are still things that need to be tweaked but the vast majority of the changes are in my opinion good ones. And even under the old rules there were things that needed to be tweaked. Nothing will ever be perfect however I think the new rules are better than what we've been competing under for at least the past 5 years.

I'm not a preson that like alot of changes. It will be intresting to tell a kid that scores more points then the other that he lost. Example: red scores 6-0 in first period 2nd blue scores 1-0 3rd blue scores 1-0 blue wins. I dont like the push out rule. On open weekends that will be the toughest rule to be inforce. Do i like the rules NO but we will be there my son loves greco.

So if you catch a guy in 1 throw and can't pin him you automatically deserve to win the match? To score 6 points in 2 minutes you had to dominate him...or catch him. If you can dominate somebody for 2 minutes why can't you turn around and do it again in the next 2 minutes...or the 2 minutes after that?
If you catch somebody in 1 throw but can't score any other way after that you really don't deserve to win...unless you pin him.

Wrestlers are going to have to be in better shape and you're going to see guys going harder in the 3rd and 5th minutes than they had to before. None of this build up a lead and sit on it crap.

Nobody really likes changes. People don't like what is different. Until they really give it a chance.

I've had many officials at all levels tell me they think this will actually be much easier to officiate than the old rules. No need to worry about a parent getting pissed off because some official didn't call passivity...can't call it because it doesn't exist. There are many other things that are more clear cut.

And the push-out rule you're talking about...do you actually know the rule or are you going based on what you heard from random people? This isn't Sumo like some people are saying. Coaches will not be coaching kids to just push the other guy off the mat...if they do it's going to end up costing the kids that are trying that tactic.
