Well run tournament, much smoother than the folkstyle state. The PeeWee 45lb finals match was a terrific match! Both kids showed alot of heart and determination!! Fun to watch. |

The State Tny should have run smoother - numbers were down by 600 from last year. Where are the wrestlers this year??? |

I believe your figures are incorrect- I'm told the tournament had appx 600 wrestlers; down from around 750 or so - that's a big difference- this was also the first year that the tournament used the trackwrestling computer system for pairing- I have heard that it went very well - |

If the tournament was down by 150 wrestlers that would equal a 20% decrease in numbers. That is significant. In any business that is a serious issue. I predict a decrease in the numbers at next years folkstyle tournament after this years event as well. Alot of angry people left Rochesterin March. I was very disappointed in how disfunctional and unorganized the event was projected. Threatening kids over the PA that they won't be able to wrestle unless the organizers get more table workers is rediculous. Volunteer organization or not, that is rediculous. The event should be better planned out than that. The event had little to no communication (promotion), the awards were a joke, the operation was disfunctional and the event did not have the feel of a "state tournament." Off my soapbox.....had to express my feelings..... |

I thought the new track wrestling pairing was very smooth. Much less waiting than in the past. I think the numbers dropped out of fear of the new rules and too short of a season. I liked it better when state was the weekend before Mem. day to get more opens in. Folk season lasts forever, and free/greco season keeps getting shortened. When knocking MN/USA, remember all the organization does for Schoolboy/Cadet/Jr's that no one else does... All the training and camps etc. This is much more important, wrestler development, than the size of an award. |

Excellent comment Heavy. I'm sure Stizo will be the first person in line to volunteer his/her services next year. HF |

We thought it was fun and well run. No confusion at registration, PA was clear and informative, awards were smooth. We've been going for years and plan on returning again. In fact 2 other wrestlers from our local club made their first trip and club leaders already have plans of increasing our numbers for next year. As a bonous some kids will advance to Regions and Natonals, some others will get the oppurtunity to particapate with the Minnesota Allstars against the Wisconsin Allstars in a four team dual. What more could you ask for. Thanks MNUSA! |

With gas prices at what they are and the tournament being down in Rochester , Im not surprised at the 20% decrease in numbers. But if they would have had the state tournament on the opening of fishing, Im sure the numbers would have probably been down even more. I agree it would have been nice to have had another weekend of open tournaments. It just seemed like the season was too short for freestlyle this year. I think that the State freestyle tournament was run sooo much better than the folkstyle. The new computer system was great! And the people working at the main table were wonderful. I had to go up there a couple of times, and was impressed with how quickly I was helped or my questions were answered. ( And those people were running their tails off) |

Stizo, Your first posting says "well run tournament, much smoother than the folkstyle state" and then your second posting kind of blasts the whole thing. Was it well run or did you not like it? As for the announcements regarding needing volunteers...that was the truth. If we didn't have enough people volunteering to run the tables we could not open those mats. Which is why I spent a large part of my day on Friday working a table so the pee-wee's could wrestle and making sure the other people working those tables could watch their own children. Thank you very much to the other 2 gentleman that manned that table throughout the day. And thank you to MN/USA Wrestling President Jeff Lathrop for also working that table throughout the day. This all goes back to what I said last week before the event...the organization needs volunteers. People need to attend the Board of Director/General Membership meetings or provide those of us that do with ideas on how to make things better. Don't like the awards? Tell us what you do like and let us know where we can get them without them being cost prohibitive. I'll give out my email address yet again for anyone that would like to provide real constructive criticism. Tell us what to do better and then tell us what you are willing to do to help it become better. Ever seen Jerry McGuire? "Help me help you". Help us help you. Chris Willaert cwillaert@chartermi.net |

Good post Chris. My post was constructive criticism for discussion. Unfortunatley, on a message board I don't have the luxury of tone and body language and leave such a post up for interpretation. I too voluteered and worked a table all weekend. "Having Fun" You can bet I will be first in line to volunteer as will others if you let them know your needs. Don't throw stones at those who want to help and offer an perspective. I thought the tournament was run better than the folkstyle state. I thought the folkstyle state is in dire need of some special attention. The volunteer issue could have been addressed days, weeks, months before the tournament on this board, at the qualifiers, etc. Again, it comes down to communication. The awards should be indictative of the event. I saw a kid pretty disappointed in his dinky fourth place plaque and I agreed with his feelings. I felt for the kid. He thought the 5th place medal was cooler than his 4th place plaque. Regardless, the awards should be the most sought after prize in the state, right? Not throwing rocks at MNUSA, not even close, just giving my .02. |

This tournament was by far the smoothest run tournament held in recent years by USA - they moved it along at rapid fire pace. As far as the awards - they haven't changed in years - what are your expectations of awards? My son is eight and got an award and he didn't complain a bit - don't think parents should be complaining if the kids aren't. The PA system worked well - it was not crowded around the mats - they had lots of vendors to buy from, the restrooms were functioning, the weather was great, the competition was good, what more do you want????? |

IMONTOPSTEP Do you think all of the positive things you listed were because the numbers were down by 20% I agree with Stizo, the awards need attention. I thought the medal we got at the aau state was much nicer than the plaque we got for our state championship this past weekend. The plaque was fake looking with a sticker!! Yes, a sticker!! I guess some of us just expect more, something that will last for years to commemorate a significant accomplishment. You basically have said, "we have had mediocre, like mediocre, expect mediocre." I disagree and it appears that at least 20% of the freestyle community agrees with Stizo and I. Good for Stizo to speak their feelings!! |

The reward is winning it or placing,The emphasis should not be on how big the trophy is but the acomplishment! In highschool sections you get a medal the size of a quarter, not abig trophy or giant medal its about what you feel you you have done.the reward id knowing you are the best that day or 2nd or 3rd ect>>>! |

Stizo, Your most recent post clarifies what you were saying. Your comments regarding the awards will be passed along. I do appreciate constructive criticism and being one of the people on the MN/USA board who reads this forum the most (or at least posts the most) I do usually take all this stuff to the board meetings and let others know what is being said. I do still invite people to email me at any time or for that matter call me. I'd prefer not to post my work or cell phone numbers on this site but if you email or PM me I will gladly give them to you so that you can call me. I want to see MN be the most dominant there is at all levels and all styles...that starts with the little guys. Going back to the awards for a second...the wall chart is in my opinion the best award there is. As Todd said, the MSHSL gives out medals that are not very big. My brothers state championship medal from this year is at home...but hanging off of the corner of a nicely framed State Champion wall chart. When my parents have friends or relatives over they rarely notice the medal but everyone looks at the wall chart. Although I'm sure my mom sometimes wishes that wall-charts were not a part of her normal living room decor. :P Chris |

I don't know what you mean by mediocre - I guess I never mentioned that word in my posting - but - why it was run smoothly - I don't care - that it did run smoothly I was really impressed with. Fortunately my boys have had the opportunity to win AAU USA & NYWA, and never did they say "Gee -sure am glad that I won because now I can get this awesome trophy" They wanted to win to accomplish something - not to get an award. Like the other poster said - What do you get for winning State High School - what if you kid wins that? Are you gonna call the MSHL and tell them they should hand out better trophies? |

Just my opinion, to much is been put into the whole trophy medal thing! sure they are nice but in all honesty my kid could care less if they gave trophies or medals. Its about knowing you have won or placed or even just accomplished a goal or exceeded that goal.Maybe thats not enough for some kids but just telling you how mine is!You know i dont think a kid that wrestles for the proverbial trophy will fair as well as a kid who wants to be a champion or wants to place. Its all apride thing knowing you did your best, wich will not always be good enough but at least you know you tried and can improve off it! just my humble opinion! |

Chris I commend you, you are obviously working through your heart. I in no way shape or form meant to offend your efforts. I felt as a member of the association I could give constructive criticism. I agree with you on the wall charts!! I too, still have my championship wall charts. I also agree that the size of the award means nothing. A good award is a quality, custom award that reflects the event. My most cherished awards are ones that are nice to hold and personalized to the organiztion or event. Keep in mind that the little guys look at the award they get. I would hate to see the organization go to 6 ft. $5 trophy, that would be worse. |

If a tournament gives out really nice awards, that is the first thing you hear about the tournament! The numbers usually go through the roof for that event as people are motivated to wrestle for something nice that means something. You can put the title "state championship" on anything these days. Here in MN we have NYAS, MYAS, MNUSA, AAU, etc. Everyone has a state championship these days. I guess the one who puts the most pride behind their accomplishment will prevail. Unfortunately, most tournaments give out really cheap little trophies these days so the kids don't take any pride in them. Somebody posted on this board after the USAW Kids Folkstyle Nationals and the first thing they wrote was "the medals were huge and cool" then went on to talk about the competition. The really nice awards are hung with pride in our house. The cheap ones go in the toy box. I guess it comes down to how much pride the tournament has in itself. The Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, Nextel Cup, Bowl Championship Series, etc. all take pride in their award because it reflects the accomplishment. Again, it comes down to how pride and equity you put into the accomplishment. |

I would just like to mention that I thought the freestyle tournament was outstanding. One of my wrestlers wrestled six matches between 8:30am and 1:30pm on Saturday so the bracket was finished and we didn't have to come back on Sunday. I think we all have a great asset in MN / USA wrestling. Many of us probably grew up wrestling in it and have gained a lot from the sweat of the those who have paved the road before us. Back then there wasn't a youth folkstyle season so once you were done with your Junior High season or Elementary clinic you could wrestle all of March, April, May and into June if you were lucky enough to qualify for Nationals. Well today is a whole different animal with a folkstlye season that can last 5 to 6 months by the time April rolls around many kids, parents, and coaches have burnt out. Until my own kid started wrestling I forgot how much fun freestlye is and can be, not to mention the improvement you see from one additional month of wrestling. The wrestling you see this time of year is incredible. I think we should all work harder to improve involvement, increase the #'s, and help wrestling prosper. Chris, When is the next BOD meeting? |

I agree "Imontopstep"! After 3,4,5,6, or 7 years of trophys medals, and awards etc...the only thing that matters is how that kid feels he did and whether he improved....If your son or daughter can make an improvement during the season like beat someone that they havent beatin or score on someone they havent scored on would mean more to them than an award! Ive never heard my son say that like "Look at my trophy or look at my medal!!" Although i have heard him say "Did you see how I beat so and so" The kids remember more about the matches than the awards, and in conclusion I would like to say that if I were to pick an award for my son it would be something in the clothing line, at least its something we could use!!!...... |

Sharky I have to say I thought your creative "editing" was a little below the belt. I think we all can see over the last few months Todd's posts have been constructive and informative. Why rub salt into an old wound. I see no harm was intended, but I would hate to have the "Hate Todd Army" get any ammunition and start all that old BS again. I did see alot of good matches at state. Luke Vaith was very close in a period with a dark haired guy. the guy was ahead and Luke did what he does best with a few twists and turns and beat him. I believe they were tied 1-1 and that was the final period. Dylan lost his first period and came back to win. There were others too but those 2 stand out for me. |
