I traveled down to Sioux City a couple of weeks ago and got to see Jake wrestle first hand. I was very impressed with his physique and the way he handled himself on the mat. He is a built guy but what stood out to me was his upper-legs and hips. He, obviously, has a very powerful "CORE" (stomach, legs, and hips). I was interested on how you train Jake? I realize that genetics plays a role in body type but this can't be the entire story. He looks to be "forged" in these areas. I noticed the "CORE" area on other Greco Wrestlers as well. It is obviously a very important area of the body for that style. However, I think a strong core is important in any style of wrestling. One of Jake's key opponents, Brad Vering, is strong but is built a little differently. He has a big upper-body and seems to use quickness and wrestling in a flurry as a main tactic. I'd prefer Jake's tools and style. Jake is all business out there. I had fun watching you Jake and I was impressed with the respect you showed your opponents and the respect they paid to you. You seemed to keep the emotions in check and often engaged in conversation with your opponents throughout the day. You're a credit to the state and to the USA. Congratulations on your career and good luck to you at the worlds and all your future endeavors. |

Liv, Thanks for all the compliments and kind words... I truly appreciate them. This might be a difficult post for me to reply on, but I will try. My brother and other friends always give me "grief" about my build and say that I have a "Tank A--". To be honest, I'm not really sure if I can answer the question of HOW I ended up like that? I can explain to you what I did with training in my life and hope that covers a bit of what you're looking for? I DO have a different build than Vering. He is a very lean/cut wrestler. He has that "V" build that most people try to get and it works well for him in his wrestling. Growing up I wrestled EVERYDAY. I have no idea how many matches I would get in a year, but from the time I was 5, until the time I was a Senior in High School... I was on the mat. I never ended up having a wieghtlifting plan and by no means am I saying it's NOT important. My belief is that by WRESTLING all the time, you will train the muscles needed, and in doing so, build "wrestling strength"... it's somewhere up there with "old man strength"!!! A mix of the two can be deadly! ha ha. I feel that in practicing moves, drilling, and in wrestling live... you will develop the muscles that are needed and that benefit you on the mat. They might not be as "defined" as other muscles, but they are there. I think some people believe they need to bench a certain amount, squat a certain amount, or be able to eat a 45 lbs. plate. I beg to differ. I feel that some people become TOO strong, inturn making them less flexible. You need to find a happy medium between the two. I have wrestled people that are pretty "yoked" and scary to look at... however, they don't have the balance and flexibility that is needed. I'm saying this "in general". I believe it's good to get in the gym and workout... I was a fan of pull-ups (with a wieghted belt), lat pull downs, and curls (straight bar, and dumbell). I have NO idea how much I bench, squat, or anything like that... and to be honest can't recall the last time I did either. Yes, I have done those excersizes and occasionally will be doing them in my training now... but I TRULY BELIEVE that "mat time" is MOST IMPORTANT. Ofcourse there are people out there that will want to debate me on the above info, however... that is WHAT I DID. Not until college did I really have a workout plan. There at the U, that was a big part of our training. While I was living at the Olympic Training Center I was again on a "weight trianing schedule". At the OTC it wasn't about benching or curls though. It was more about snatch, squats, and other various "wrestling" weight lifting techniques (plate workouts, and other stuff they've made up) that are used for Greco. In a nutshell, during my high school years it was rare to find me in the weightroom. Instead, I was on the mat or outside running. I'm not saying it works for everyone or that it's the WAY to go. I'm just stating what I did, and I believe it has worked for me. By no means am I trying to brag, but I found a talent that I had at a young age. My body and mind adapted to the sport of wrestling at a quick pace and everything seemed natural... and still does. There are times I can't explain what I just did, or how I did it... I just do it? It's wierd. I feel the most important thing is to put your time in on the mat! Running and lifting weights will obviously be beneficial to you. But at the same time, too much can be bad for you. I did lift weights, I did run, but not as much as I would see other people doing it. Instead I was on the mat while they were lifting... and still on the mat when they went home. I hope that explains a bit of what you were asking. If not, let me know and I can try to make sense. As for the respect I have for my opponents, and the respect they show for me... We are all wrestlers and a different breed of human. We might look like the toughest, meanest, ugliest person around... however most wrestlers I know (on our level) are GREAT people... and great friends. We are the only people that TRULY understand our way of life and what we go through. Because of that we stick together. I've heard people say that whole saying about, "Friends off the mat, enemies on the mat." I don't agree with that. I belive it's good to want to win against whoever is on the mat. I just don't feel you should put respect and sportsmanship in your back pocket. There are some wrestlers that I don't get along with or that I wouldn't call a friend... but it doesn't mean that I wrestle them meaner than I would someone I had respect for. Sportsmanship is something I strongly believe in. My mother raised me to have respect for everyone, and to be humble... win or lose. I'm very greatful for that. When I lose, do I get mad? Yes, I do. Have there been times when I've lost my cool on a mat because of a loss? Yes, I have. I guess that's just part of the competitive spirit... however it's not an excuse. My mother has always told me to represent my family and myself to the highest. That is VERY important to me. Believe it or not, but my mother taught my brother and I a saying that went, "Congratulations, you're the winner, I'm the loser, and I'm OK." It hurts to say that when you've just lost... but no doubt, she would make Joey and I say that after a match (not directly to our opponent, but aloud to her or whoever else). My brother and I joke about it to this day when we play video games, cribbage, or whatever else. When one of us is victorious over the other... we make them say it! (and it STILL hurts!) Nonetheless, I feel it was an important lesson that our mother taught us. You must be humble at all times, win or lose... and always respect your opponent, on and off of the mat. Some of the guys at my weight that I compete against are great friends of mine... That's just how the sport is. After I wrestled Brad Ahearn down at Trials... a few minutes later he had brought his kid down for my family and I to see. If he would have won, it would have been the same! Again, I appreciate your comments. If you have any other questions... feel free to ask. Jake |

Jake reminds me of how Gordy Morgan was constructed and is. A thinkness to him but yet can scramble in a power way.I found these tobe the most dangerous freaks. Flexible enuff to get into a spot and strong enuff to crush you coming out of it. If you look close to a boxers back you can see it is biult off center. Jab side and his power punch side.......like wrestling you train in a way and your body will show it. Kids that read this must understand you train hard and we can see your work......... think or lanky ....it shows. I have seen some lanky freaks ...........like a Russian HWT back a few years.......flexible, lean and lanky. Jake is a prime role model for our sport and its training in it. Liv.........very good post. |

Thank you Jake and to all of the above. You answered my question better than I could have ever dreamt. In fact, I'm going to print this out for my son and our Adrian wrestlers to read. If someone ever states that there is lack of character in the sport of wrestling then I'd challenge that thought and ask them to read Jake's post. I hope my son and our wrestlers can adopt the same mentality. I think they would enjoy the sport in the way it should be enjoyed. I feel rivalries and competition can be unproductive and unsportsmanlike at times. I know I've fallen victim to this as of late and throughout my wrestling career. I would have enjoyed the sport more (and will enjoy it more) thinking about the sport, rivalries, and competition in the same way Jake and Joey do. It is comforting to hear that "mat time" is something you hold very highly. It reaffirms our philosophy in Adrian. We will wrestle throughout the summer and I think it will pay off. We also encourage lifting but I think kids have too much of a "V" philosophy and not enough "A". The "V's" look better on the beach but your "A" is standing on top of the podium. I like that build on my favorite wrestlers and that is why I asked. Thank you again Jake. It sounds like Joey and you had a great upbringing and you appear to have your mental aspects aligned to accomplish your goals. I'll keep an eye out for a Jake Clark poster. I'd like to buy one for my son. Role models are a large part of a young man's life. I, as Dad, do what I can but I'd like him to wrestle and represent himself on the mat like you do. Good luck! |

Jake, I forgot to give you my congrats on your accomplishments. Things finally have come full circle for you and your brother, it seem like both of you are doing well Jake in greco and Joey in MMA! I think you remember me, I wrestled at Buffalo with Jim and Fast Eddy Kath and then wrestled at Wartburg! I now live in IGH, right next door to where you guys grew up. So your hanging out at Billy's for a bit while your in town, will have to stop up there and have a couple diet sodas with you! Last time I talked with you you were at Billy's and I believe the Olympic were starting and I think you were getting ready to go to Okinowa, I remeber asking you when you would be ready for the Olympics? Well it looks like you are finally there good luck and again Congrats to both of you guys for representing MN wrestling so well! Brandon |
