With the great article (well deserved) about the Shorts, one can't help but become a great wrestler (with hard work) being born into that family and others like Bullermans, Morgans, Thorns etc. Lets list ANY kids who did very well without anyone in their family preceding them in the sport. Can anyone think of any? |

Heavyweight, there are a lot of great wrestlers that did not come from a blood line. The names you named, are the few that came from a blood line. Don't get me wrong, I think if you have the blood line, you may have a better chance, but there is a lot of wrestler that do not have that blood line that become great wrestlers. |

Name some please. And I mean with NO ONE in their family preceeding them, dad, uncle, cousin whatever. Some kids who out of the blue said, I want to wrestle, and it wasn't even on the families radar...(Like the hillbilly who sends the first kid ever in the family to college) I just can't think of any kids without a strong tie to the sport who have been relatively successful in HS, College, or at USA Natl tourneys etc. (except xhockeys kid) Thanks!!! LMD...don't you know anyone??? |

I didn't say the wouldn't be successful, not at all. I just didn't personally know many. Obviously, there are a TON (great post avenger) and I agree, if first generation brothers start, they count. I didn't know Chad Erikson was a first generation wrestler, wow... It is an advantage to be in a family like the Shorts or Morgans or to have multiple brothers to work out with. In every sport there is obviously first gereration kids that are complete animals. I love the list, any others? |

My dad started wrestling in 9th grade with no bloodlines attached to the sport at all. Personally, I always thought that would be very difficult. Deciding on your own that you want to enter the battle in 9th grade without any prior knowledge of the sport. I've always respected him for that. Long story short, my dad's 4 younger brothers wrestled. My grandpa/grandma became huge wrestling fans. My dad met my mom(who was a wrestling fan), and my brother and I grew up around wrestling. I've always wondered what would've happened if dad decided to go out for basketball. Would I have made the decision on my own to try wrestling? |

Maybe you would have if... You got recruited off the church steps for fighting like my son did. Absolutely no wrestlers in the family proir to that. One church wrestling dad made a suggestion that stuck. |

Jayson's older cousin Scott Huckell was a pretty good wrestler from Wisconsin. I'm not sure if he started wrestling before Jayson, though. |

What about that Ousley Early (sp?) kid from a few years back from St. Paul Johnson. He started wrestling as a sophomore and won a state championship as a senior. I don't think he had a bloodline. |

Brandon Bahr started wanted to start wrestling when he was in 1st grade and stuck with it. This was his first year and he made the cadet national team (although he was a 2nd year cadet). He wishes he would've started last year, he had a lot of fun with them. Brandon's dad's only sport was music and his mom was not an athlete by far. There were no immediate family members on the parents side that were athletes. He is the first in this blood line. There are other Bahr wrestlers, but different bloodlines - although I believe they all are related to some degree..... so maybe this doesn't count. |
