Does anyone have the information or no of the site to look at for Nationals in Iowa for folkstyle? I know it is April 4-6 and its at the Uni-dome in Cedar Falls. I was wondering if you have to preregister or if you can register there as you could in the past. And what time weigh-ins are? Thank you

thank you so much for the fast reply. If I'm not mistaken in the past to qualify to go you must partcipate at MN USA state not place but at least wrestle there. Correct I'm not sure if things have changed. Aslo it is open to Bantam's now not just midget and older right?

yes they added bantams for folkstyle

I can't say if any rules have changed, but in the past you have only had to compete at state or get a medical waiver to wrestle at nationals

All the way up thru Veterans...

I have a question, Folk Natls is absolutely stacked (big brackets) thru cadets and then hardly ANY Juniors from MN go (comparatively) Is there a reason for this? Just curious...as to why the numbers fall off drastically. Do we have something going on the same weekend for Juniors?

Last year was the first year juniors could wrestle, so numbers might look better this year.

So, to clarify for the hundreth time as it looks on this thread,
ALL DIVISIONS have to participate at State to wrestle Nationals? Or is there some other criteria?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that All age divisions EXCEPT for Cadet and Junior have to participate in the State Tournament in order to be eligible for Folk Nationals...the reason being that Cadet and Junior age kids can't participate until their HS season is over, and they aren't able to wrestle any non-high school events ... not as many Juniors participate, probably due to them going to High School Nationals instead, plus like Obsessed mentioned, it's only the 2nd yr they've allowed Junior's to participate....

If you go to themat.com, and look under schedules, it will take you to the flier for Folkstyle Nationals and it explains that certain States, INCL Minnesota,
require pre-certification, ( which means participating at State) -
good luck everyone :)

I'm pretty sure you have to wrestle MN/USA State even as a cadet to be able to go to USA Nationals. At least we did last year.
The only way you were exempt from that was if you made it to the highschool state tournament.

If this is not the case could someone let us know because we want to go to nationals, but would rather hit the Big Tens that weekend.

All divisions (except Juniors) have to wrestle in the MN/USA state tournament to be eligible to compete at the 2008 folkstyle nationals UNLESS they are still competing for their HS team on an INDIVIDUAL basis as of 2/27/08.

Juniors...we don't hold a folkstyle state tournament for that level so folk nationals is an open tournament for them. They do however have to be on the list submitted by our state as would any wrestler fitting the scenario above. In order to be on that list a person simply needs to email myself.

If you have any other questions regarding this please email me directly.

FYI...no where during the registration process does it prevent you from registering if you have not entered STATE. ;) ....My son has been entered into this tournament since January 15th....

No worries though we will be at the State tournament....wouldn't miss it for the world :D

That is true. But if you get down there and he's not on the list submitted by the state association (mn/usaw) they will not let him wrestle.

What is the rule for weights at folkstyle nationals? I know you can go up a weight from what you wrestled at state, but you can't go down a weight, can you?

You can wrestle any weight you want, it is an open national tournament. You just have to wrestle at MN/USA State to be able to go or have gone to highschool state.
Just for Folkstyle though, different rules for FS/GR.

AAU Nationals was this weekend in Michigan.
However there are several other nationals tournaments that same weekend as USA Folkstyle Nationals that could limit numbers this year. Hopefully not though.

No. If you are registered at 91 and weigh 91.1 you will get bumped up to 97 but not DQ'ed. I have seen it happen too, no sympathy for missing it by 1 tenth! But no excuse either, there ARE test scales available.

Yup, corrected!
