I doubt there will be many youth wrestlers there on Sat. with USA national, NYWA regionals, and Jacees State tournaments going on that same day.

This could be one of the few tourneys with a bigger greco turnout as nothing is going on Sunday to compete with it, and for some, Friday night greco tourneys are tough to get to.

All of the Mn/USA wrestling kids will be there. None of the Mn/USA kids going to USA Nationals next weekend are involved in NYWA. It should be a pretty big tournament.

That's a pretty broad statement and probably not true in the form it was put in. I'm sure we will see at least 1 kid that is going to usa nationals wrestling at an NYWA event this weekend.

Maybe I'm confused, but if you go to USA Nationals, isn't it the same weekend as NYWA state? Why would you go to an NYWA qualifier if you aren't going to state? I suppose some of those kids might participate in an NYWA team event, but I don't think those conflict with the Buffalo tournament do they? The post was about participation numbers at Buffalo.

There are times when the kids going to nationals wrestle at regions and if they place they just pass the paperwork down to the next kid. Doesn't happen a lot but it does happen.

It happens more than you think...

Kids participate in NYWA regionals because it is a very well run tourney (at least R3 is, not sure of others, but NYWA in general is well run)...They have large brackets, top competition, and kids want a folkstyle tune-up before Natls. (rather than a FS open) This is regarding Ind. tourney, which would conflict with Buffalo FS.
As for handing down papers: This is my concern, brackets are not always equatible since this tourney is NOT seeded. It is possible that a NATL bound kid COULD eliminate a kid who only wants to do NYWA state, and he would not necessarily be the next kid in line. For this specific reason, I suggest not going IF you do not plan on attending NYWA state.

Regarding K-6 team, R3 has 11 teams registered. It is POSSIBLE that teams want as much help as they can get so they make the state tourney, even if they will be without a stud or 2, a kid could help their team in Regions and decide to go to Natls. And the 7-8 team could have team members compete and still make it to Natls. as the 7-8 team event is on TH-FR and Natls is Sat-Sun....

For Buffalo Greco, Pee-Wee thru Novice 1/2 SB may be lower but this only affects K-6 so Buffalo numbers should be solid for the older kids on Sunday.

Bottom line: there are plenty of kids who would LOVE to do both and can't...Sometimes they will compromise and do what they can do.

Not 100% what the rule is now. I do know that 3 years ago the papers were not handed down at regions.

We tried to hand the papers down at NYWA regions one year (long story) but were informed that this isn't the way it works. If one of the top 3 choses not to advance the papers may not go to the 4th place at that region. NYWA chooses what region will get the extra kid.
By participating in regions you could potentially knock a kid out of that region. There are no rules against this and I am not going to ask anyone not to. Just something to consider before Saturday.

I think this gig will see very good numbers in the juniors level. Cadets will be good as well but the juniors will be very good and I would think this will be a place these guys need to be at to test skills.

Yes, it was a very good turnout, especially in the cadets and juniors. 325 wrestlers, I believe.

There were a lot of 3 to 5 man beackets it seemed to me in the schoolboy on down age groups. We did see some 8 man brackets, but the youth numbers didn't seem as high as Eagan two weeks ago. There were still plenty of good matches.

I think this was the first tourney they had hosted. Well run for both days.

Greco turnout was lighter then Freestyle but, it always is.

Great job Buffalo folks!

Nice job......I thought they would get good numbers, 13887 was your post in ref to this thread??? or you talking about the NY chat????? I have been known to make comments on the wrong topic in the past

Did they get bigger numbers in the cadets or Juniors. Over 300 kids for Freestyle/Greco is a outstanding event number!!

I don't have exact numbers, but judging from the pairing table, the largest group was Juniors, followed by Cadets, then pretty much in order of age groups...only a few little guys ( pee wee's, bantams..) but really good job by Buffalo- first time tourney, and to have everything go so well was great...

there were 90 guys ( and two gals ?) signed up for Greco on Sunday, and then 40 more came in the door because there were appx 130 wrestlers on Sunday.

Nice job to the folks in Buffalo. The tournament was very smooth. We only brought 14 kids to the tournament due to spring break but all had a good time and the competition was good.

thanks again!
