I have attended many tournaments since the rule change giving a point for a push out took place. I agree with the rule 100% for keeping the action in the middle of the mat. However in many youth opens with quartered mats it seems ridiculious. Especially with the bigger Novice and Schoolboy wrestlers. They only have a "middle" a step either way and you are in the danger zone. I would like to see tournament directors waive the push out on quartered mats. IMO it would lead to more wrestling.

Excellent post. I understand time and room are a consideration, but having big Novice and Schoolboys on a quartered mat is a bad deal to begin with.

My understanding was that the Push-Out rule was only in effect for Full Size mats. It was not suppose to be in effect for quarter or half size mats.

Have you seen it enforced on quarter and half size mats?

Kids above the age of Bantams should only be wrestling on full mats, period.

The push out rule was always intended for full mats. I think the refs would have a hard time on half mats. Many officials in VEGAS this last week called a push out point or fleeing the mat - - every single time anyone went out.... on their knees
or feet.......I am sure we are going to see the push out rull in folkstyle within the next two years.........since they made "fleeing and leaving the mat to avoid a TD" points of emphises this year.

You better ask the ref how they are going to call the out of bounds rule before the match starts. Depending on the Ref in Burnsville some were enforcing this rule and other were not.

I am ok with them calling this rule on half mats for midgets and below. The reality is that the only time these kids will wrestle on full size mats is at USA State. I would rather have my wrestlers learning how to deal with not getting pushed out regardless of the size of the mat they are wrestling on.

I seen last year the knee slide rule being used down in Waterloo. Kind of a cheap way to Flea in some cases.
Flea control or push out rule....how ever one looks at it should not be used on small mats. I seen kids go for a head shuck and almost end up out.
I agree, full size mats then use the 1 point control score.

Consistantence in the rules/calls for the kids is want is important hear. You want the kids to "learn" that if they are pushed/step out of bounds (1/4, 1/2 or whole mat) that it is a point for thier opponent.

Circle, circle......

If you know how to stay in the middle of the mat its not that hard to keep from getting pushed out. Just stay in the middle if you start getting pushed out, circle in. The rule is good for any sized mat.

Every tournament I've been at, they've given fleeing points on quarter mats. I thought it was stupid. Kids weren't even wrestling. They were just pushing to earn points.

This rule shouldn't be enforced on 1/4 mats. You have so little room there that if you move backwards 2-3 feet, you're starting to get close. Kids would have to spend so much time worrying about circling and staying in the middle that they wouldn't be able to concentrate on actually making agressive moves.

(this applies to Greco ONLY) USA officials are ruling as of right now that when two wrestlers leaving the wrestling circle are on thier knees, it is classified as going out in par terre (or one bottom one top wrestler) and is a 0-0 action. No points SHOULD be awarded if both wrestlers leave the circle on their knees.

And I have been in favor of adding the pushout rule to high school wrestling since i first started training around it for Greco. Talk about a way to make a match more interesting! It would change mat strategy, some peoples styles, and definetly promote better action. It would also force wrestlers to get into even BETTER shape, cuz wrestling a 2 minute period with out any out of bounds rests really sucks.

To clarify going out of bounds on the knees. If a wrestler is under attack and he drops to his knees and does not counter to cause any change in the direction of the attack, a push out point should be awarded to the attacking wrestler. It does not matter if one or both wrestlers have gone to the mat prior to going out of bounds. As far as 1/4 or half mats are concerned everyone has paid an entry of the same amount and should be given a full mat to wrestle on. I personally hate to officiate on anything but a full mat.
