All of the Greco/Freestyle medal placers 1-6 recieve papers for the MN Midget/Novice Goodwill Dual teams. The team is selection is made by Keith Gliva and Pete Anderson. Typically they take the kids that place 1st in Freestyle and Greco. There is a contact number on the Duals sheet for Pete. |

Unless they changed the rules, this tourney is cut and dry in who they select (Unlike SB duals, Cadet and Jr duals, where only the champs are guaranteed a spot, and coaches can pick ANYONE else they want, regardless of state finish) With that being said: For goodwill duals: top 2 kids go period. How it is determined: 1st GR and 1st FS if different kids, they go. then next in line is 2nd FS, then 2nd GR, then 3rd FS then 3rd GR in that order, (if state champs are the same kid both styles, or if the kid in front declines. It doesn't fall down if top 2 accept)... Correct me if they have changed the rules.. |

We had a tough time finding a hotel with a lot of open rooms this year. We booked 19 rooms at the Hampton Inn in Woodbury. Wrestlers will take up 12 or 13 rooms, so there will not be a lot of extra rooms for parents to stay in at this hotel. I have a list of who's interested in getting rooms, and we'll try to be creative and work it all out this week. For those who have made the teams - please be at the hotel between 6:00 - 7:30 so you don't miss the pizza party. Please call me if you cannot make it to the hotel on Friday night. The hotel is about a 15-20 minute drive to Hudson High School, where wrestling will take place at 12:30 on Saturday. I am looking to get contact information on 3 wrestlers. Please PM or call me with information on the following wrestlers: Mack Short - IGH. Jonathan Chmilowsky - CR Wyatt Richardson - Team Unit The cost this year will be $70 per wrestler, which includes hotel, pizza, singlet, t-shirt and shorts. Feel free to call or PM me with any questions. Pete Anderson Novice Team Coach 218 831-0374 |

I wish the process to sign up for this team was a little more clear. We had a wrestler who didn't turn in his sign-up form at the tournament, mainly because he was new to the process. No information online anywhere, and nobody at the tournament explained the Goodwill Duals to them. Apparently Keith Gliva made all his phone calls, and had his team filled on Monday. The wrestlers were under the impression that higher place winners would have first crack on making the team. Not much of a crack if you ask me. It's a shame, because these kids were new to Freestyle, and were excited to compete on an All Star Team. They never really had time to review the information given to them at the tournament until they got home. If this even was posted in advance prior to the tournament, people would at least know to look out for it at the tournament. Most people just want to get home after a long day at State. |

Weazel, Typically the higher place wrestlers get first crack at making this team. What places did these boys take that did not get a chance to be on the team? I would find it odd if 1st place for either Greco or Freestyle did not get the nod to be part of the team. |

I would also like clarification on the selection process. We did turn in the form at the tournament. When we hadn't heard anything by Thursday, I called Pete. He said that Keith Gliva had been out of town and hadn't had a chance to finalize the Midget team but that our wrestler should 'definitely be on the list' based on how he placed in both styles. If the Midget team is finalized, I'd like to see it posted so that we can know it's OK to make other plans for next weekend. Although it would have been an honor for our wrestler to be on the team, I don't think he'll mind not wrestling as he's turned his attention to baseball. I'm a little saddened that he doesn't get the opportunity to 'hang out' and get to be a team mate with some of the guys he regularly sees on the mat. He thought that sounded like a lot of fun. Thank you. |

Our wrestlers took 1st and 3rd, and neither were called, or asked at the tournament to participate in this tournament. So Keith Gliva has been out of town? Actually, the story I recieved was quite different from Keith. I talked to Keith on Wednesday, and he said that he would check on it. I get an email back from Keith on Thursday saying. "Unfortunately we have already filled the spots. This years Goodwill Duals are next weekend so I started calling on Monday based on the highest place winners from the kids that signed up from each class." If I'm not mistaken, isn't the tournament NEXT weekend, and not THIS weekend? I guess wrestling is no different then any other sport....it's all about who you know. |

Thank you Keith for the phone call. Your explanation of why you made the choices you did - because we had written a note that our wrestler had expressed that he may not be 100% fired up for the tourney - made perfect sense. You needed to choose wrestlers that were gung-ho about it and that you knew would give everything they have. It's a good lesson for our wrestler about the attitude he expresses since it caused him to miss a great opportunity. (And a lesson for us to not write notes like that if we think there's a good chance he'll change his mind.) Good luck to Team Minnesota! |

I would just like to add that Keith and I did our best to put these teams together according to the rules and who turned their paperwork in. It is not about "who you know" at all. 17 of the 26 kids on the Novice team are state champs in at least on style. Everyone else placed 2nd in at least one style. These kids all earned their spot. We will do better next year to get the information out to everyone earlier. Next year I will post information about the MN/WI Duals on the Guillotine before the state tournament. I will also have them announce reminders during the tournament to turn the paperwork in before going home. I think this will help. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. |

They usually have their roster posted on the WI Wrestling Federation Web site, but I don't see any thing there. Just like any good poker player, maybe the WI coach does not want to reveal his hand B) |
