Both South Dakota and Iowa are predominately AAU states. So it is harder to get kids on the USA bandwagon.

WHY???? be a AAU fan over USA wrestling???
Although there are a FEW very well run AAU gigs, Youth Nalts in Feb. and Middle School Duals in April (Where IA had 6 teams, SD has 2 I think) they are JUST tourneys! Their goal is to run decent tourneys, (The Ironmans have poor numbers, FYI) Nothing more. Go to these when you can, great tourneys...but
USA wrestling develops wrestlers. They offer Training camps etc. And Fargo is the best tourney in terms of D1 recruitments etc. I can't understand why any state as a whole would NOT be a 100% USA backer. It is the ONLY organization that develops wrestlers. They have weight classes for everyone too...I personally wish ALL MN wrestlers participated beyond the HS/JR High ELEM season and supported MNUSA wrestling...grab a stack of placewinner t-shirts from the past 5-10 years, and you will see a HIGH % of kids who went on to D1, other college success, military wrestling and olympic hopefuls...what % can AAU boast? or kids that never participated in FS/GR in MN HS?

Many national organizations begin at the ground level and work their way up...I remember when I played softball many yrs ago, our local organization was MSF, Minnesota Softball Federation, and we were ASA affiliated...then the USSSA became more and more popular, ( lower, flatter different strike zone was the biggest difference  ) and now I think they are the predominant organization in Mn instead od the ASA....
many yrs ago, freestyle wrestling in Minnesota was run by AAU- yes, I'm old enough to know people who were involved way back then....anyway, USA wrestling grew here, and became the more dominant organization. but not so in other states....it all depends on who the local organizations are members of.if they are happy with the way things are, they're not looking for a change, why should they ? so unless there are USA wrestling organizers entering their State and working to convince them to switching them over, they're happy with what they have. I'm glad that Mn has what we have, a very strong USA Wrestling presence and attitude. :)

I saw the following quote on DakotaGrappler ... "Right now I have 132 entries from ND. I have not entered the info yet, BECAUSE... I am still waiting for those that wait until the last possible minute to get the information to me."

We still haven't seen the Nebraska kids sign up yet either. It looks like the tourney should have pretty good numbers when all is said and done. Hopefully, the 20+ South Dakota kids can keep spreading the word to others in the state.

When I look under participants on Trackwrestling, I only see Wisconsin entrants. Is this the same for everyone else?

I see all of the wrestlers. There are currently 480 signed up. The only state not showing is Nebraska.

Ralph VS Betty?
Are these two arenas adjacent to one another? The flyer said Ralph, the directors say Betty...

Also, thanks to ND having decent numbers, the brackets are looking far better, FS only updated. Hopefully NE will send some kids??? They are the only stay with a Zero showing.

looking at the UND map...the two are connected. "The Betty" is on the west side of "The Ralph".

It has ended up being very good numbers for the tournament. North Dakota has 152 kids signed up, you have to hand it to them for supporting their own tournament. Minnesota has 143 wrestlers versus 120 last year when it was in Iowa. Illinois is sending 80 kids versus 129 when it was much closer last year...seems like a good turnout from the Illinois kids. I'm surprised Wisconsin only has 59 kids showing up compared to 106 last year.

Quite a bit different make up from only a couple of years ago.

In 2006 WI had 221 signed up
IL - 147
MN - 129
IA - 70
ND 35
SD and NE both had 11

I guess that is what happens when you don't have the national event anymore.

Can someone explain to me why Sam Stoll took 3rd out of 3 (RR matches) when all three kids split and all three had 1 pin each. All 3 kids had 5 points. Basically, 3 way tie.
In Greco? I don't understand the criteria in this case.
Please look on track wrestling under SB 175.

Without knowing the scores of the matches, my guess would probably be that he scored the least amount of technical points during the matches. I think that's the next criteria after a tie in the round robin.

I was looking through the North Dakota participants and I noticed 5 more Mellmers ranging from bantam to schoolboy: Jaxon, Damon, Tyrell, Prestin, and Even. Does anyone know if they are related to the Mellmers that wrestle at the U?

I was looking at the team results for Minnesota(great job, often took a Minnesotan to knock of a Minnesotan) and they have Sam Stoll listed as winning his bracket, and they still have him as 3rd in the round robin. Very confusing.

It's at the track wrestling web site http://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/Login.jsp then you pick the the Northern Plains tourn. from the list. Highlight the tourn. and then click 'enter tournament'.

I did a little looking last night and it seems to me that the Minnesota boys might have actually done slightly better in freestyle than greco which kind of surprised me.

Not me. With the exception of Central and maybe FL, very few clubs for kids (under age cadet) focus at all on Greco. I know my son had ZERO greco practices this year, and only a few minutes here and there during FS practices where they touched on GR at all. I would love to see more emphasis (or a split at FS practice) focusing on GR for kids. I can't wait until next year when he can attend the Cadet/JR FS AND GR practices. It will be great to have a 1x a week GR ONLY practice.

Overall, I think MN dominated at Northern Plains, with few exceptions we had multiple placers in most brackets that had MN kids entered. AWESOME!

My son wrestles with Central and I wouldn't go as far to say they focus on Greco at all. They have some good Greco wrestlers, but don't do as far to designate more than a handful of "throw practices" or "Greco practices".. I truly think there is only a handful of "Greco teachers in this state". We've been blessed to have Dan around since they discovered "dirt" and to have Brandon and Jake make some special apperances, but there will be a day when Dan hangs it up. Who has the personality, knowledge, experiance and dedication to ensure Minnesota continues to dominate in "Greco" ????? I just don't see anyone like Dan around anymore, it's scary... Thanks Dan for your unselfish committment for the past 30+ years.. We wouldn't be what we are if it weren't for you!
