My son wrestles with Central and I wouldn't go as far to say they focus on Greco at all. They have some good Greco wrestlers, but don't do as far to designate more than a handful of "throw practices" or "Greco practices".. I truly think there is only a handful of "Greco teachers in this state". We've been blessed to have Dan around since they discovered "dirt" and to have Brandon and Jake make some special apperances, but there will be a day when Dan hangs it up. Who has the personality, knowledge, experiance and dedication to ensure Minnesota continues to dominate in "Greco" ?????  I just don't see anyone like Dan around anymore, it's scary... Thanks Dan for your unselfish committment for the past 30+ years.. We wouldn't be what we are if it weren't for you!

It's true that we could be seeing the downfall of Greco in the state of Minnesota. Too bad, since we used to be one of the top Greco states in the country. My count shows 6 or 7 Minnesota guys competing in Greco for the Olympic Team Trials this week, how many freestylers?

BTW - I think it's now against the rules to actually say the word "Greco" at a Hi Flyers Practice.

Schoolboy had 7 greco champs and 5 runner ups and 7 freestyle champs and 6 runner ups. I beleive there were only 15 weights in SB (top weights didn't have anyone).

Greco:

70 1st & 2nd
77 1st
84 1st
91 2nd
105 1st
112 2nd
120 2nd
128 1st
136 2nd
175 1st
190 1st

Freestyle:

70 1st & 2nd
77 1st
84 2nd
91 2nd
105 1st
112 2nd
120 1st
128 1st
136 1st
144 2nd
152 2nd
190 1st

I don't see to many holes in the SB duels team. The second team should also have a good showing.

Since I run the Hi Flyers, I guess I take exception to your comment about our club. We start practice the first Tuesday of March....with Folkstyle state and nationals running through to early April, we concentrate on folkstyle and takedowns until then. That leaves us with about a month (maybe 8 practices) to get ready for freestyle state. How many different techniques can kids learn in 8 practices?
When Greco state was separated from freestyle state by one week, the Hi Flyers always took that week and spent it on Greco technique. Now that week has been pulled from our schedule. So we have been hit with more folkstyle on the front end of our schedule and a week has been taken out of the back end of our schedule. As a club we are supportive of Greco and encourage all of our Cadets and Juniors to get down to Augsburg and work with Dan Chandler.

I think the MN participation was down because some of the boys had finals on Thursday - couldn't get there for weigh-ins.

This is my opinion for what it is worth I think that Greco Is still very good here but I think other states have caught up. If you look at the Duels and Fargo from year to year Minnesota has done as well as anybody Including PA. Its just like Hockey at one time Minnesota was clearly the best there still as good as anybody but others have caught up just like hockey.

how do they choose the starting line ups for cadet duals? For example Ben Bowar placed 4th at greco state at 171 but ended up beating the state champ at Northern Plains. Do the coaches take that into consideration?

You are correct in that it will be a loss to Mn wrestling when Dan hangs it up, but with all the talent he has developed there will be someone willing to carry the torch.

Mike Houck has been active as a coach in the past, and may willing to take over. There were these Morgan guys who had success in the past. They may have what it takes, and they have been doing their part up till now. The runt from Anoka has shown his ability to develop talent. He may be an option. That Clark kid may settle down again in Mn. He seems to care about Mn wrestling, and with a little male pattern baldness, and some back hair like a gorilla he would be a shoe in for the job. Also don't forget about the current batch of competitors. Bisek, Betts, Nielsen, Tellgren, and Dietchler.Success breds success, and I think the future looks bright.

It sounded like you were saying the Hi-Flyers shun greco, and Booster simply pointed out that is not the case and they support it and encourage their boys to do greco.

Doesn't sound much like a confirmation.

Hi Flyers is a top notch club and they welcome all kids. I can't say enough about them. That club is not the greco problem...
There needs to be a regional site for all kids to practice GR, One North, Metro, south...currently, only Cadets and Jrs can practice GR on a regular basis.

Greco:

70 1st & 2nd
77 1st
84 1st
91         2nd
105 1st
112       2nd
120       2nd
128 1st
136       2nd
175 1st
190 1st

Freestyle:

70 1st & 2nd
77 1st
84         2nd
91         2nd
105 1st
112       2nd
120 1st
128 1st
136 1st
144       2nd
152       2nd
190 1st

I don't see to many holes in the SB duels team. The second team should also have a good showing.

We do look rock solid 70 thru 190! Outstanding showing at NP by the Schoolboys!
We were also missing some top studs at NP...had they been there, we would have done more damage.

BOTH A and B teams will be tough to beat.

Wondering who the 210 and 235's will be on the duals team? My guess is some kids will bump up? I can't wait to see the roster, doubt it will be posted until track wrestling demands it...mostly so other teams can't plan strategies...

Not true. Some local clubs, such as St. Cloud still offer Greco practice on a regular basis. If you are a Hi Flyer, then yes you would need to find somewhere else to go to practice Greco.

Anywhere in the metro? St. Cloud is almost a 2 hr drive for us, just too far with gas prices the way they are...
If you read my first post, I said, Central does have GR, and no one else does, that I know of, they all focus on FS. (Kids, not Cadets/Jrs)

We practice Greco out here about 1/8th of the time, younger kids love it. But it is very hard to go to trnys when they are on Friday nights. Work till 3-3:30 with a 2 hour drive, hard to make on consistant bases.

Greco's best kept secret (trying to get the word out) is Greco Sundays at Orno Middle school with Austin Enoch. He is one of the best coaches my son has ever had. They praticse every Sunday from 4-5:30. I don't necessaryily like the day, but the praticse is awesome. Austin is a Jr. National Champ, and will be a Gopher next year.
Call Jeff Martin 612-600-1785. This will go through the last weekend in June. Overall it was for 10 Sunday's.

BTW - The Hi-Flyers have discussed having a "Greco Monday" next year.

Also, St. Francis also does a Greco Monday, which is closer to the Metro than Central.
