Skyler Petry would also disagree with vizwiz.
Although it would have been an honor to watch Skyler, he wan't a 2AA wrestler.

Before this spirals out...

I brought up the 2AA alum I know are competing the next two weekends and asked for others to be recognized, that I may missed. Yes, the ones I listed are SW wrestlers, they are the competitors I am most familiar with/follow.

I also called out a couple young men I think have a chance to make it to the big dance at the next level to show we are seeing more parity and college level talent.

2AA had a good representation from all the schools in the section this year. HS season is over. Lets move on to cheering for the ones we watched grow up and now competing for the "local" colleges.
I was't trying to get it to spiral. I understood the recognition that you were giving, I just thought that I would pile on because someone else didn't.

The only other name that I could think of was Skyler, and forgot that WEM/JWP wasn't in 2AA back then.

And the ones that wrestled in 2AA that do not wrestle quite so "local" ;)

Every interaction I have ever had with Griffin has been a pleasure...

He is for sure included in my "local" colleges! I look forward to following/cheering for him during his college career.

My sentiments exactly on Griffin, Quality young man. I knuckle bumped him after multiple Christmas Tournament titles, and always had a good interaction with Griffin watching him grow as a wrestler. Hoping for great things for him on and off the mat at Purdue.

Congrats to former 2AA SW wrestler Michael Kroells on becoming a 3 time All American for the Golden Gophers! Finishes his last match with a dominating TF.

Also congrats to his SW teammate David Flynn with his first All American finish for Augsburg! I look forward to your next 3 years.

I want to thank all the 2AA fans, coaches, and wrestlers. I have coached in New Prague for 11 years, all of which the Trojans were part of section 2AA. This section has been competitive and fun. The competition within 2AA has helped push our program to get better and for that I want to thank you. That challenge will continue as we head to 2AAA next season.

Welcome back Delano and best wishes to all athletes, coaches, and programs within 2AA!

Joe Traen the head coach of Watertown Mayer has passed this morning due to a heart attack. Joe was a very positive influence not only in the sport of wrestling, but throughout his community. Kind and also always focused Joe did an amazing job with all the students and athletes that he had throughout his years at Watertown Mayer school district. He will be missed and prayers will go out to his family. Thanks for everything Joe Traen

Sad news for sure, I know all his Wrestlers, their families and the 2AA family are with the Traen family and Watertown Wrestling family in thoughts and prayers.

Like any family the 2AA teams love to battle like brothers and sisters will among each other. However there is a greater sense of Brethren in knowing one belongs to a group that has proved again and again how much pride, honor and toughness the competition in this entire section has been for a long time.

We also know how we make each other better as a whole by our in house battles. Coach Traen was a big part of that for his team and this section. We can all claim him as one of ours.

Our Heavenly Father has called His child home and our world shines less bright, yet Heaven rejoices in it's returning son. Amen.

Herald Journal Article on Coach Traen

PRIME THE PUMP: Joe Traen leaves behind a legacy much greater than wins
Posted on April 1, 2017 by Kip Kovar

WATERTOWN – He was a son, a father, and a husband. He was a wrestling coach, and a teacher. When Watertown-Mayer’s wrestling coach Joe Traen passed away from a heart attack earlier this week, it shook the entire community of Watertown.

“It really didn’t hit me until I was driving home the night of from a freestyle wrestling practice,” senior Bryce Kallenbach said. “I was thinking about how much time he gave of his life to us. I remember hearing his voice cheering me on in the state tournament. I remember during the summer I would hang out with his son Andy at his house with coach Traen. Coach Traen has left nothing but a positive impact on my life.”

Watertown-Mayer wrestling coach Joe Traen passed away earlier this week from a heart attack. Traen was involved with the Royals’ wrestling program for over 25 years, and recorded more than 400 career dual wins. Traen was honored before a home match earlier this season for his 400th win. He’s pictured with his wife Deb, and sons Adam and Andy.

What Traen was able to accomplish on the mat during his career as the Royals’ wrestling coach, fails in comparison to the man he truly was, and the lives he changed forever.

“In coach Traen’s 27 years of coaching and teaching at Watertown-Mayer, he touched thousands of lives,” Watertown-Mayer athletic director Tom Dasovich said. “He was a wonderful example of transformative teaching, and coaching to change students for the better.”

It didn’t matter who it was or where it was, Traen had the ability to connect with his wrestlers and students in a unique way. He was a man that wanted the best for his kids and his students.

“He wasn’t ever the coach you’d get scared about for running or working extra hard in practice because he was upset,” Aaron Sweeney said. “He was really good at communicating with his athletes and seemed to always do the best for the team.”

Sweeney, a 2014 graduate of Watertown-Mayer, wrestled for Traen for six years on the varsity team, and still remembers the impact he had on him.

“Personally, I use to get really nervous before I’d wrestle and play the match out a couple of times in my head before I went out there,” Sweeney said. “Joe helped calm me by saying a joke, or just putting on a warm smile and giving me a high five before I went out there.”

When you get the chance to spend almost two hours a day with a man like Traen each day at practice, a bond begins to grow. A bond that goes beyond a player and a coach.

“Coach Traen was as close as a father to us wrestlers as a coach can be,” Kallenbach said. “Every winter we spend two hours a day with him, training and so on. Losing him is like losing a member of my family. At first I was hoping the news was a sad mistake. I couldn’t believe it. I called my fellow team members to spread the news. The initial shock was just as numbing to them.”

For any wrestler that went through the Watertown-Mayer program under Traen, you can bet they each have their own story or special moment that they’ll never forget. For Jackson Motzko, a 2002 graduate, it’s a simple story that still holds true in his life today.

“He had a profound impact on my life in those years of wrestling,” Motzko said in a Facebook post. “I remember this story he would share with us from time to time. It still helps me today to put in the work in takes to get where you want to go.”

The story that still holds true to Motzko today, is one about making sure you put the work into whatever it is that you want to accomplish.

“There was a man who got lost in the desert. After wandering around for a long time his throat became very dry, about that time he saw a little shack in the distance. He made his way over to the shack and found a water pump with a small jug of water and a note. The note read: Pour all the water into the top of the pump to prime it, if you do this you will get all the water you need. Now the man had a choice to make, if he trusted the note and poured the water in and it worked he would have all the water he needed. If it didn’t work he would still be thirsty and he might die. Or he could choose to drink the water in the jug and get immediate satisfaction, but it might not be enough and he still might die. After thinking about it the man decided to risk it. He poured the entire jug into the pump and began to work the handle, at first nothing happened and he got a little scared but he kept going and water started coming out. So much water came out he drank all he wanted, took a shower, and filled all the containers he could find.”

Traen recorded his 400th career dual win this past season, which was an incredible accomplishment for the amount of time, energy, and heart he put into the Watertown-Mayer wrestling program. Even with 400 career wins, Traen leaves behind something much greater than victories.

“Joe Traen was one of the most selfless people I knew,” senior Corey Jobe said. “He always had the best intent in mind for anyone he was around. He left a positive impact on anyone who knew him. He was a loving father, a great coach and friend. He was someone who you could talk to about anything. He meant a lot to me and all the wrestlers on the team.”

It wasn’t just Traen’s wrestlers that grew to love and respect him. With his passion for the sport, and his unmatched integrity, Traen earned the respect of their opponents as well.

“A lot of other teams always respected Joe for his good character and also the wrestlers and team he consistently produced,” Sweeney said.

Traen had a gift to be able to connect with people and make them feel special. If was enough to make Jobe come back to the wrestling program after quitting his junior year. In his last and final year of high school wrestling, Jobe made it to the state tournament with none other than his coach beside him. The same coach that connected with him and convinced him to give it another shot.

“He inspired everyone to do the best they could and believed in everyone through the wins and losses,” Jobe said. “I quit wrestling my junior year, but because of Joe, I joined again. He never stopped believing in us and I will always be grateful for that. Coach Traen may be gone, but he’ll never be forgotten.”

There will be a celebration of Joe’s life at the Watertown-Mayer High School gymnasium Tuesday, April 4. Visitation runs from 3 to 6 p.m., with the funeral following.

“Coach Traen was always there for us during our tough moments in wrestling and in life,” Kallenbach said. “He provided an example to follow for all of us. Just because he has passed on, doesn’t mean he has left our corner of the mat. He will always be cheering us on whether its an opponent on the mat or an obstacle in life.”

Dear Wrestling Coaches, Officials, and Fans,

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support during this difficult time. It has truly been overwhelming! All of the flowers emails, phone calls, and messages online have been amazing. Thank you to all who were able to attend Joe’s services on Tuesday. It was truly powerful and so uplifting to us coaches, our wrestlers, and most importantly to Joe’s family; his family was so incredibly humbled by your support. The wrestling family has always been a unique and special group of people, and, it has once again been proven, beyond the shadow of a doubt, over and over again this past week!

I heard the New Prague has moved up a class and joined AV, Shakopee and P. L. in the same region, is this true? If so, I believe their chances of making it to State as a team went from about 30 percent to about .3 percent.

Is it more than a 3 team race with Hutch, Scottwest & Waco? Who is expected to be the 4th team in the semi's. Also lack of season dual between Scottwest & Hutch and Scottwest & Waco. I heard Hutch pulled out and Waco just didn't happen. Scottwest & Waco will be at the Christmas Tourney & Rumble on Red so a few head to head matches likely.

Real early to tell but based off of last years teams those are definitely the top three. After that I would guess Delano, St. Peter, TCU, and Watertown will be in the mix for the fourth spot.
Based off section results Hutch lost 5 seniors and Scott West lost 3. Watertown and TCU will have 5 seniors this year. St. Peter and Waconia seem to be the youngest.

Delano's team will depend a lot on their health. If they stay healthy, I think this could be as good or better team than the 08-09 teams. Tough to lose Sjomeling and Russek but they are the only starters that graduated. Jim

TCU over Scott West-West
Scott West-West over St Peter
Scott West-East winner by FF over Scott West-West
Waseca over TCU

Any chatter with the season fast approaching? Obviously we don't know weights yet but we could take some guesses.
Scott West has to be the favorite with returning 11 starters. Hutch and Waconia will be the in the top 3 again I'd guess. Who's going to be that 4th team to make Saturday? Delano is young and tough, St. Peter and TCU didn't lose many, WMML is always tough and has senior leadership, and Mankato West returns all 14 starters including 8 seniors!
