I know it's cool seeing your kids name in the rankings, but it doesn't mean much. Come sections either they make it to state or not and NO ONE remembers whether they were ranked during the year.
I think with the depth in section 2AA rankings will have some play into things. It does help with a seeding meeting. And, with the depth at some weights in 2AA it could make the difference of going to state and not.

Yes, I know you still have to place top 2, but sometimes the difficutly of the road there makes a difference.

So, I agree, it does not mean everything, but I would disagree that it does not mean much.
Well maybe, but most of the coaches probably look at head-to-head matches together or between similar opponents, record, level of competition, etc. The rankings are usually pretty good for the top 3, but once you get down to the bottom you could probably switch a number of kids that are very close. At sections I would guess figuring out the #1, #2 or even the #3 seed is not that difficult, it's the 4-6 that people argue.
In most cases, but not all. Take 126 for example.

Madson
Lloyd
Retzlaff
Zilverberg
Sweeney

Who are the top 3?
...and they say 2AA is weak?

Okay, it's one weight class that is extremely deep, if they all stay there. I doubt the coaches say, "but he's ranked higher by The Guillotine". Maybe I would be suprised, though the raters do a great job, they don't get to watch all the kids thoughout the year. Plus what if a guy is at rank #3 at 132 and goes to 126, but another guys at 126 is ranked #2? Does the guy at 126 automatically get the Section #1 seed because he's ranked higher or the 132 pounder coming down because you think he will be even stronger? The record, head-to-head, common opponents and schedule strength is play a major part.

I agree. Head-to-head is an obvious #1 criteria. Common opponents....2nd. However, sometimes there are neither; especially if wrestlers are bumping weights. Then it may come down to two coaches (who may be a little bias ;o) saying their wrestler is better than the other. At that point, it is usually open to a vote among coaches......who often times are "buddies" with one of the coaches and not the other. Therefore, it could be brought up that a supposed "non-bias" guillotine rater thinks kid A is better than kid B.

I agree with you on most of this sitandspin. I do, however, think the ratings can, and do, come into play at times in seeding meetings. Believe it or not, not all coaches are knowledgeable with many other wrestlers in the state other than their own. In this situation, the said coach WILL go off of what the "rank" is.

Any section match-ups coming up this week? I think Watertown and Hutchinson wrestle either this week or next. Gosh, is it right there are only 2 weeks of the regular season left!?

Fastest season in a long time IMO!

It's getting to that crunch time everyone waits and works for! Cant wait!

The match was not held. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 2, as part of a double-dual at Farmington.

I think the 9-12 in the team rankings could be switched up a bit. New Prague IMO should be in there, but top in the Lean and Mean is still good!

I also think Hartwig, Griffin Parriott, and Flynn all could be moved up a few spots in the rankings. But then again it can go many different ways.

Nathan Preston has also done some good things since he moved down to 195. He is looking strong!

Other than those things listed, no problems!

It's interesting to see where everyone is weighing in lately. Some weigh in 1 or 2 classes below where they started, but have moved back up in recent weeks. I know some of it is for team match-ups, but it will be interesting to see where kids land at Section individuals. Any scoop on where some of these guys are going to end up?

What was the score of the New Prague / Farmington Dual last thursday?
Found this on the New Prague Times website. The reason they didn't have a score last week.

Wrestling team taking unwanted break

The New Prague High School wrestling team is getting an unexpected, and unwelcome, week off of competition after a possible exposure to the herpes gladiatorum virus at a recent meet. While no Trojan has reported symptoms of the skin infection, the team has postponed its meet with Farmington scheduled for Jan. 26 and will have only conditioning practices - no contact - until Monday, Jan. 30, as a precaution. The Trojans are tentatively scheduled to return to competition Thursday, Feb. 2, at Farmington. Read more in the February 2, 2012, print edition of The New Prague Times

They are wrestling Farmington this Thursday @ Farmington. Then they have a home dual vs. Northfield and Minneapolis Southwest a believe.
So everything must be fine, otherwise I think they'd still be out.
I think those are their last 2 conference duals too.

SW beats Shakopee tonight 64 - 12. SW won 12 of 14 matches with I believe 9 pins. Kroells pinned AAA #2 Ranked HWT Anderson in the 3rd period.

think we better at least weight until team sections is over to see where everyone will be at weight wise - I think there is a lot of shuffling and guessing going on to see where some of the big guns will be. In other words - would Scott West please release their line up - so we can get the conversation going?? :)
