Well, you obviously won't get any phone calls or texts, Willaert....especially from these parents. Isn't it obvious that whoever has sour grapes isn't exactly the best communicator? :D

olecanvasback and imabulldog have it correct. Sad thing is that one of the biggest names in olympic style wrestling was one of the leaders that left and had everyone wondering as to why he would just "up and leave". Kids and families that are grateful for the opportunity and probably do not want to create any waves. Give them and their families a break. Adults make mistakes too and learn from them. All in all it is a great opportunity that kids would never want to lose. And sour grapes is not a part of any concern over the safety of kids. Would it be sour grapes if something tragic had happened to these kids on that campus alone at that time of night. I think we need to look at it from merely a safety issue which is what it was and is. Kids had communicated well with parents, and parents were in the way and arrived as timely as they could from throughout greater Minnesota in the traffic and detours on roads they do not travel all of the time...and there was no adult supervision or protection just waiting. I would think part of an hour on the part of an adult leader from MNUSA is worth the safety of our future leaders/coaches/wrestlers in the Sport. That is the fartherest thing from sour grapes. Do you think the parents would suffer sour grapes if their kids were harmed in some way between 1 am and 2 am or so when no adults from MNUSA were their waiting with them?

I know of no detour in the down town area that takes an hour and a half to get through.

i know of no good reason for kids ever to be left alone either!!!!!!!!! If you were to talk to any of the kids/families you would probably find very grateful people for the opportunity. Probably would find folks who may live outstate and were in good communication with the kids, who were alone for whatever reason (good or bad).

Reasons they may want to hang around and be with kids whose parents were on the way and in communication:

1. gang initiations--and related violence
2. sexual and homicidal preditors
3. guys takes people hostage on Cedar Av within a mile or so from Augsburg Campus
4. Get to know good kids even better

And, since you started this post, do you know for a fact of a wrestler that was not allowed to stay and watch the finals at Fargo?

Why would anyone let their kid go to camp there? And think of how irresponsible all those parents are who sent their kids to school there. It's amazing to me that their kids were OK there for days prior to camp, but an hour and a half after camp is eminent danger.

If they would have been left for 15 minutes no one would have said a word, and if the parents would have been there when they were supposed to, they wouldn't have been left alone at all.

Mat732--

nobody that has posted here has degraded anyone...infact if you reread the posts they have indicated that the numerous kids that were left alone very much appreciate every opportunity afforded them. Caring and concern for the safety of kids never has, does not and never will equal degridation of anything or anyone! If you, we, us believe the kids should have had someone there for whatever reason and someone was not, it is what it is, and I will bet by someone bringing it up, it will never happen again. The way people like you are treating the issue I can see why folks would not feel comfortable approaching the subject head on. It is not personal it is just for what is the well being and safety of kids. I cannot blame anyone for caring enough for kids to bring it out whatever the form or fashion, and furthermore would never blame someone for not wanting to take the lambsting others are offering because of the care and concern for kids that were left alone.

I would think no one has lost any respect or concern for the leadership, coaches or volunteers. Thankfully we have them, and they have always proven to be responsive to other challenges that did happen within MNUSA Wrestliin in the past. They will for sure do it again on this.

take the location out of it. It was after 1 or 2 am for goodness sake and the parents apparently were not negligent or intentionally late. Who cares if it was minutes, an hour or hours. As someone already said, "it is what it is". No one was there with kids who apparently did not know why they were left alone when their parents were apparently on the way, and coming from other parts of the cities and the State. Since you raised it, we all wonder what was more important than making sure that kids got to parents who were on their way whether waiting for a minute, an hour or longer?

Being an hour and a half late is negligent, and blaming it on detours is not believable. I don't think I would have left those kid there, but I don't think it's fair to place the majority blame on our MNUSA staff. I also don't think it was unreasonable for this person to assume the parents were going to be there any minute.

buchancountyplowboy, you have publicly called out one of the most respected people in the history of Minnesota wrestling. Who are you? Or do you prefer to do this anonymously?

So you think just because he is one of the biggest names in Minnesota wrestling, he should be let off the hook on just that alone? I am not close to the situation, so I need all of the facts first but with all of the things that are being said here, it seems more and more true every time I read it. Maybe one of the parents that came to pick one of there kids up should step up to the plate and wait with the kids instead of leaving them there. It is a dangerous neighborhood, especially that late at night. They need to be more organized and have someone put responsible for these kids when they get back, which as long as I have been involved with wrestling, has been the coach's job.

so you think someone was called out publicly? I am not going to ask who you are. Does this mean then that you think kids should be left alone after midnight alone? Let's take a deep breather here and remember that no matter who we have been, are nor are not "in the eyes of MNUSA Wrestling" that it is the kids that matter, and their well being. We cannot blame anyone at all for being concerned enough to bring the matter to the forefront, and being intimidated by the responses here. I too can see why they would not want to be tied publicly to it. Imagine that the people would rather attack someone for caring, than focus on the welfare and safety of kids. Fine example to kids isn't it? I'd like to believe that the wrestling community is one of the best at seeing what needs to be done and getting it taken care of without blaming someone for bringing it to light.

No, I don't think anyone should be "left off the hook". I just don't think the forum is the right place to correct the situation.

By the way, you need facts? Ask me.

There isn't anything wrong with this being discussed on a "FORUM". The problem has happened in the past and apparently is still happening. Many people aren't going to say anything directly to MN/USA because they are thankful for MN/USA and they don't want to complain. Believe me, if something bad happened the you know what would hit the fan big time. MN/USA would be in the headlines and be involved in a big lawsuit.

Just about everyone has thanked MN/USA for all they do. I don't see the big deal about bringing up the concern of "kids" being left alone. I think, in the eyes of the law, cadets and anyone under 18 would be considered "children". When kids aren't picked-up by their parents at daycare the daycare can not leave the kids alone at the curb. I think the daycare can call the police after a certain length of time and report what is happening. The police then consider the parents child neglect (something like that) and will pick-up the children. In the eyes of the law there are resonable expectations when you leave your kids with other adults.

You can not leave children alone. The time of day doesn't matter and the length of time they are left alone doesn't matter. We all know it only takes a couple of minutes for terrible things to happen.

I understand why the driver(s) left. The wrestler's aren't little kids. However, the point is that they are still children and that has to be remembered.

It's to the benefit of MN/USA that this has been brought up.

If it is not brought DIRECTLY to MN/USA attention how do you expect anything to change? It makes no sense to complain about things on an ANONYMOUS forum. If someone is truly upset they should be a little more responsible and bring it up to the PROPER people in the PROPER forum.

I'm still waiting for somebody to contact me regarding this 1 or 2 am stuff. I've received 2 emails total. 1 was regarding a freestyle wrestler going home. The other was from a parent of a wrestler who was in those vans that returned to Augsburg on Tuesday night. So first I will say that the vans did not arrive back in mpls at 1am. They arrived back around 11:30pm. This has been confirmed with coaches and other wrestlers/parents. According to the parents I spoke with there were no wrestlers sitting around at that time...I think the words were along the lines of "everybody pretty much just scattered". I also talked to a couple of the coaches who were driving those vans. When they arrived back at Augsburg around 11:30 pm they contacted campus security because they needed to leave the keys for those vans with them so the Freestyle team could take them the next morning. The coaches spoke with campus security about keeping an eye on the 1 or 2 kids whose parents were not there at that very moment.

To those who say their kids were sitting around Augsburg at 1-2am that night again, I ask you call me as opposed to spreading what appears to be false information based on any accounts I have received other than an anonymous post on this forum. If you son said he wouldn't be home until 1 or 2 am you should ask them why so late when the team left Fargo around 7:30 that night...it does not take close to 6 hours to get from Fargo to mpls.

Thanks for sorting through the stuff. It sounds like the timelines were miscommunicated in these posts and except for that the facts remain virtually the same. Still it does not matter what time it was. It sounds like there were kids that were left alone and coaches were aware of it, and they confirmed it to you now, and you have confirmed it to us:

" The coaches spoke with campus security about keeping an eye on the 1 or 2 kids whose parents were not there at that very moment."

Thanks again for all that the leadership does. Thanks for straightening out the timeline and confirming that kids were left alone without supervision, and that coaches from MNUSA Wrestling knowingly left them there, when parents were on their way, without even knowing if parents were on their way. I will bet it won't happen again without the kids having a designated parent there volunteering from MNUSA , or a coach from MNUSA Wrestling.

By the way, it does not sound like any parent was not on their way. No one has said the kids were goofing off as you seem to unfortunately imply:
"If you son said he wouldn't be home until 1 or 2 am you should ask them why so late when the team left Fargo around 7:30 that night...it does not take close to 6 hours to get from Fargo to mpls. "

You may need to rethink that aspect of your repsonse when it sounds like from your own words you have discovered that kids were picked up by their parents who were on their way and that the timeline and process was what was screwed up. Sounds like the kids were just patiently waiting and were not misleading anyone as you seem to want to now imply. Sounds like they were simply left alone and being left alone whether at 11:30 or 1:30 is no different.

It was an issue that needed to be addressed and sounds like we all can move on knowing that you know it was not handled right at all by your own admission and words, and that there will changes.

Sounds like C. Willaert, himself, answered your question and brought to light the facts that the kids were knowingly left alone...which we would all agree is no good no matter the time. Also sounds like the folks were on their way...but the kids were still left alone. Lets all head on as Chris, as he always does as he does the great work he does, makes sure that it does not happen again.

Moral of the story:

*There are always lunatic parents making an issue with something

*No one was hurt (besides halfiowafan's bruised ego)...no gang bangs, pediophile attacks, or bearded ninjas with num-chucks selling crack

*Augsburg is a pretty secure campus

*Finally, don't believe everything you read...think for yourself and appreciate the coaches, wrestlers, and families that make MN/USA wrestling such an awesome organization.

I'll quote myself:
Quote:

According to the parents I spoke with there were no wrestlers sitting around at that time...I think the words were along the lines of "everybody pretty much just scattered".

Quote:

The coaches spoke with campus security about keeping an eye on the 1 or 2 kids whose parents were not there at that very moment.
This was when the coaches were getting the keys to where they needed to be.

The kids were not left alone as far as any of our coaches is aware. No coach was aware of any kids sitting there waiting by themselves. The vans arrived back in mpls around 11:30. The parents who I did speak with did not see a single kid sitting there by themselves when they left. I can't see that any of our greco coaches did anything wrong. So please stop blasting us and saying that is the case. If you are truly concerned and feel there is an issue you will contact me. If you don't contact me I'll assume there is no merit to your claims. Again, if you have any concerns regarding something relating to your child please contact me.

better brusied ego's persay than kids left alone anytime day or night. Thanks to each poster that was willing to weigh in to make sure it does not happen again. Also, from what we've heard from more than a handful of posters must be true, as you have confirmed, just like was reported...the coaches scattered and did not remain behind to be sure kids were not left alone. They apparently were. Whether it was 11:30 as you said or after midnight it does not change the importance of the turth of kids being left alone.

Too bad these people will not actually contact me so we can get the story straight and actually find out what happened. Those who I've actually spoken with claim that everything we're reading on here is simply not true, going back to the first or 2nd post that started talking about 1 or 2 am. This is simply not true.
