....I hope MMA becomes a launching pad for many NCAA division 1 wrestlers...it gives them the opportunity to continue to compete at a high level and potentially make a good living at it as well. Wrestlers tend to have the advantage when transitioning into MMA; takedowns and ground and pounding almost come naturally to most of them.. Here is a short list of wrestlers that have transitioned into MMA....some successfully, some not so much. Logan Clarke --- 11-2 record..at the top of his game...his striking has improved ten fold..eg see Misaki fight Dan Henderson -- hall of famer 22-7 record Randy Couture -- hall of famer 16-7 record Matt Lindland -- hall of famer 21 - 5 record...his destruction of Carlos Newton is one of my all time favorite fights. Sean Salmon -- 14-5 record never really the same since Rashad knocked him out with a head kick. Tito Ortiz -- 15-6 record took an average wrestling career and turned it into gold. Rashad Evans-- 11-0 record...the book is still open on Rashad..but he seems to be making the best of it. Townsend Saunders -- 0-2 record...didn't transition well into the sport. Had two really tough fights against Mikey Burnett and Pat Miletich...I saw them both, and they were really tough physical loses. Kenny Monday --1-0 record...I think Kenny would have excelled at the sport..but decided to pursue his coaching career. Rex Holman ---4-2 record...last loss was against Matt Hamil Kevin Jackson--4-2 record...Kevin stormed on the scene and started is carrer with three dominant ground and pound performances that made him look unstoppable. The Frank Shamrock fight started the same...but Frank's jui-jitsu was tight and he caught Kevin in an armbar 30 seconds into the fight..He lost in the same fashion to Jerry Bohlander in his next fight. I think Kevin would have continued to excell at the sport, but obviously his first love was wrestling/coaching. Matt Hughes --42-7 record...most successful wrestler to date in my opinion. He has fought everybody....Matt Serra next?? I hope so!! Josh Koschek--13-2...his transformation from TUF 1 has been as been dramatic...his future looks bright... Kevin Randleman--17-12 although he was as explosive an athlete as one will ever find, he just couldn't or wouldn't learn the Jui Jitsu side...I would still have to say his transition was smooth and would even consider him a hall of famer canditate. Mark Coleman--15-8 the inventor of ground and pound...Mark Coleman used the head but better than anyone in the history of MMA...but once that became illegal you slowly saw Mark have less and less success. Hall of famer and deservedly so. Matt Hamill --4-1 record he will truly be tested in his next fight against Rich Franklin...this is probably a cross roads fight for him. Dan Severn--86-15 record...Severn's fight against Royce Gracie will always be one of my all time favorite fights...He continues to fight today....one of the true pioneers of the sport. Mark Kerr--15-9 record...was considered one of the best MMA fighters in the world...but his battle with chmicals hindered his carreer...he tried to make a couple of comebacks but he could never regain his form. Brock Lesnar--2-1 record...Brock could be the real deal...I have no doubt he will have a great career in MMA. I am sure there are many more...but these are the ones that come to my fading memory. |

I laughed at making that list. My wrestling career was far less than average than Tito's. |

I think Ben would be very tough. Very flexible and funky and athletic. Nice combinations to have not to mention his world class wrestling skills. |

Its great to see more and more wrestlers transitioning over to MMA. Its seems to be the natural progression of things. The true test will be when he takes one on the chin and he has to pull guard and take a flurry of elbows and strikes to the noggin....that's when the heart is tested and questions are answered. |
