Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

Local mixed martial artists Travis Wiuff and Logan Clark enjoyed Japan so much the first time around, they've made another trip overseas.

Wiuff and Clark are in Japan, preparing for upcoming fights as part of World Victory Road's "Sengoku 5," an event that will take place early Sunday morning (about 3 a.m. here in Minnesota) in Tokyo.

Both will be fighting in Japan for the second time. Wiuff defeated Kaz Fujita in his first trip to Japan, while Clark suffered a decision loss to top-10 world ranked Kaz Misaki during Sengoku 3 in June.

Clark will get another big test this weekend, facing UFC veteran Jorge Santiago. The fight is part of an eight-man middleweight (185 pounds) tournament; the winner will move on to the semifinals, tentatively scheduled for November.

Santiago has many impressive names on his fighting resume, though he suffered losses to most of his big-time opponents -- Chris Leben, Alan Belcher, Joey Villasenor, Manny Gamburyan and Diego Sanchez.

Still, Santiago is a veteran and owns impressive victories over guys like Sean Salmon, Trevor Prangley, Andrei Semenov and Jeremy Horn.

"Other than Misaki, he's probably the most complete fighter I've faced," Clark said of Santiago. "He stays pretty well protected (on his feet), and he's a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. He's very dangerous in his guard, so I don't think I'll go to the ground with him unless I can get directly to side mount."

Clark and Wiuff flew to Japan on Wednesday. Clark is looking to get back on track after the loss to Misaki, who recently defeated Joe Riggs here in the U.S.

"I hope my takedown defense is good," Clark said. "It seems like any time someone throws good combos at him, he starts shooting. But I want to break his spirit. Some of his past opponents (have run out of energy), and I won't do that."

Wiuff headed to Japan amid controversy -- his original opponent has backed out of the fight. Roger Gracie reportedly has an injury, though World Victory Road questioned that injury. When Gracie informed the organization of the injury, WVR asked for proof. Gracie did not provide any evidence from a doctor of a serious injury and did not return follow-up requests by WVR.

So Gracie is out, and MMA newcomer Mo Lawal is in as Wiuff's new opponent.

Wiuff will go from facing a world-class jiu-jitsu practitioner in Gracie to a world-class wrestler in Lawal, who trains with highly regard Team Quest.

Lawal was a Division II National Champion and just missed out on qualifying for the Olympics this year.

Wiuff also has a wrestling background, earning All-America honors at both Rochester Community and Technical College and Minnesota State, Mankato.

Wiuff, of Rochester, is on a 10-fight winning streak and now has a professional record of 53-11.

I have a hard time being quotable when I am being interviewed while driving through slightly raining rush hour traffic in the metro.

Here is another story if you are interested in checking it out: Clark set for Santiago and Sengoku 5

I thought I had a link for us CD but it turned out to be a dud....right now the only option is going www.sherdog.com....they will have minute to minute updates while the show is going on.

I would say that I will ask my family what they are going to use, but once I leave for the venue I won't be able to talk to them, and they usually get the link at the last minute.

I accidentally got up and started getting ready at 4 this morning.

Quote from sherdog...

A tournament favorite, American Top Team’s Jorge Santiago seemed more focused on his protein shakes than his opponent, World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Logan Clark. Having battled Misaki in a unanimous decision loss in June, Clark (11-2) had a bit of fun at Santiago’s expense.

“Mr. Santiago has a very nice tan,” Clark said. “It makes me feel sorry for being a pale-skinned Canadian. Look for us to kick the crap out of each other and have a good time doing it.”

Atta boy Logan!!!

Here is the fight: http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/x6walh

I made a number of mistakes on the ground along with that stupid knee that got me taken down on the feet, and Santiago did a good job of keeping me from separating to land more uppercuts standing as well as locking me down on the ground. I definitely was flowing better in the first, but when things weren't working well for me I started thinking too much and ended up slowing down.

I fight far better when I don't think and just do. I couldn't tell you what I did to get out of that kimura.

Oh well, I'll be back. Hopefully they invite me to be in the reserve bout. It seems the fans like my beard, and I was even told that I was cute several times. Didn't expect that.

First round went well. Second, not so much. He took something out of me with knees to the body, but I just wasn't working properly in the second. I'll survive the loss though.

That Darth chocke is a very sneaky choke...you really can't tell its coming it just appears like he just trying to improve position by actually him circling clock wise just makes it slip in tighter..

Your kimura escape was slick....the crowd really appreciated it...ithe Japanese are so quiet in the crowd. You looked really good in the first round and were doing well in the second...he just had some sick ground skills.

I hope you can provide me with the link to the pink pounder ring tones...you got at least two sales...

Have a safe trip back....looking forward to your next fight.

What's next? Sober up from Nakamura and Yoshida's afterparty and then hope that they put me in the reserve bout.

He was super slick on the ground, and he worked well to hurt me on the feet. The gif for that kimura escape is pretty sick. Don't know how I do stuff like that.

The ringtones are the funniest thing I can think of.

I'm not sure where my last few hours have gone.

I'll be back!!! And I will continue to be unflashy but happy. No reason to change now.

Logan, it appears that they have announced Joe Deorkson and Izuru Takeuchi as the reserve bout...sorry to hear they didn't give you the opportunity to fight your way back into the tourney.
