It was obvious when rewatching the PENN vs GSP fight that there was a tiny amount of vaseline wiped on GSP traps after doing his face in between rounds...but it was recognized immiediately and was wiped off very quickly...

For Penn to suggesting that is the reason why he lost is just plain stupid...I hope there is a third one....

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templa...d=8122&zoneid=2

In the wake of controversy surrounding the actions of Georges St. Pierre’s cornermen at UFC 94, BJ Penn’s legal counsel has requested a “comprehensive investigation” from the Nevada State Athletic Commission on the second battle between the MMA superstars.

In a letter filed with the commission shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Penn’s lawyer, Raffi Nahabedian, said St. Pierre’s improper use of Vaseline during the fight prevented Penn from a fair contest and put him in a potentially dangerous situation.

“This illegal situation made it impossible for Mr. Penn to defend himself and unfairly exposed Mr. Penn to GSP’s ‘ground and pound’ strategy, which Mr. Penn extensively trained for and was fully prepared to perform against,” the letter states. “More importantly, by neutralizing Mr. Penn’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu abilities through the use of illegal and improper means, Mr. Penn was subjected to a life threatening and career ending environment; an environment that the Commission was formed to protect against.”

Penn spent much of the third and fourth rounds of their encounter on his back, as St. Pierre dealt out a vicious ground and pound attack. St. Pierre won the superfight after a ringside doctor examined Penn and the fighter's corner agreed that he should not continue following the end of the fourth round.

Between the second and third rounds, officials from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, including executive director Keith Kizer, approached St. Pierre’s corner after an commission inspector noticed that the welterweight champion’s cornerman, after applying Vaseline to his face, touched St. Pierre's shoulders and back. The officials subsequently wiped St. Pierre down with a towel and checked him again between the third and fourth rounds.

At the post-fight press conference for the fight, UFC president Dana White condemned the actions of St. Pierre’s cornermen. St. Pierre’s chief second and trainer, Greg Jackson, on Sunday said a procedure meant to boost St. Pierre’s energy was misconstrued by commission officials and there was no intentional misuse of the lubricant.

In an interview with SI.com, St. Pierre steadfastly denied any charges he was cheating.

“I have nothing to hide,” he said. “I'm not even afraid to go into court and fight that.”

According to Nevada Athletic Commission regulation 467.598, “the excessive use of grease or any other foreign substance may not be used on the face or body of an unarmed combatant.”

Mr. Nahabedian said the letter was not a formal complaint, but a “request that the Commission will perform its duties to ensure that the activities of GSP and his agents are properly dealt with by the Commission.” Penn’s brother, J.D. Penn, on Sunday told Sherdog.com that a formal complaint would be filed with the commission on Monday.

Keith Kizer, Executive Director for the NSAC, said he has obtained a copy of the fight from the UFC featuring a camera dedicated to GSP’s corner between the first, second, and third rounds. A copy of Mr. Nahabedian’s letter will be sent to the “principal cornermen” of St. Pierre on Thursday. The cornermen will be given 20 days, from the time they receive the letter, to respond.

“This gives them more of a full opportunity to let them have their side of it as well,” he said.

Kizer said he and NSAC chairman Bill Brady will decide whether to pursue the matter at a commission meeting after reviewing the tape and the cornermen’s response. In theory, St. Pierre’s seconds could face disciplinary action if any impropriety is found. Rule 467.628 of the Nevada Athletic Code states that the commission “shall hold the chief second responsible for the conduct of the assistant seconds during the progress of the contest or exhibition.”

Penn’s camp has until Feb. 10 to file a formal complaint.

I am tired of fighters crying because they did not train! BJ one of the most gifted fighters ever got beat because he trained to get beat! GSP trained to win, he put himself through hell and kicked his ass into quitting! He said before the fight he wanted BJ to regret fighting him again and backed it up! Greg Jackson is a great trainer and corner. They did not grease him down to cheat. BJ beat himself! BJ with his talent should have won, but trained like a punk and got BEAT DOWN like Charlie Brown!!! :D

Penn is a little girl who quit because he was to tired to compete for 5, 5 minnute rounds. I was robbed of seeing GSP beat the tar out of that arrogent little punk for a full 25 minnutes because he didn't have the commitment to train like a fighter should train.

GSP is more gifted than BJ Penn in alot of ways IMO.. BJ's will to win was very very poor even thow there wasnt much he could have really done against the bigger stronger fighter.. GSP will keep smashin but if he wants to go up to 185 silva will give hime some trouble the way gsp gave bj trouble ... but im sure gsp will actually fight till the death and not just talk about it on camera pre fight.

Did Penn wrestle in HS?

I've always wondered that, it just seem to me that he probably didn't because he has no respect for conditioning, IMO.

BJ Penn is such a weenie. I love all the hate he's getting at the forums on bjpenn.com, man they are ripping him good. For someone who said he would fight to the death, or kill or his opponent, quitting in between rounds is pretty funny. I actually hope bjpenn retires after 10 consecutive losses, tarnishing his legacy.

Aoki is #1 in the world right now. I don't even care that this fight was at welterweight. He's having his lawyer fight for him now, what a tool. I want bad things to happen to BJ Penn for being such a pile of S.

EDIT: grammar.

Penn should quit his bickering and just have the rematch and actually train hard this time and give GSP a real match. Even though he'd still get pounded anyways.

No, there shouldn't even be a rematch, it would be pointless, both weightclasses are being put on hold for Penn whiny bitch-ass. I hope Penn gets injured and can never fight again so things can be normal.

Agreed, D...
No rematch, and make him fight KenFlo...

Only until a real Lightweight (most likely Junie Browning) comes to take the title for good. (note sarcasm and homerish stating)

My thoughts are that I would like to see the rematch with Penn and Sherk. I think if Sean takes that same approach and force him to grapple the first 2 rounds the match becomes his. I thought GSP's tactics were dead on.

BJ's take down defense lasted how long??

Maybe so, I think he would have done well had he chose a different tactic in the last fight. He chose to stand with a fresh Penn and did not change the game plan.

I think he has the tools to beat anyone who gases.

Sherk did have a horrible gameplan against BJ. Maybe things would be different if they fought again, but Sherk might have some work to put in. Ken-Flo is def. next in line, he deserves it, that boy has been hustlin' for a minute now. I hope he works BJ over, sends him into retirement.

Sherk would have a chance if BJ Trains like he did for the GSP fight! If BJ trained like he did before the first sherk fight, sherk would get beat up bad again!

Kenny is gonna murk BJ. He's just fat and lazy. He's my least favorite top fighter. I honestly think anyone that can take BJ down, and defend a sub for long enough to take it to the gritty they can win pretty easily.

yep cant stand the guy! He was starting to grow on me that past year or so. I like his crap when he licks his gloves I thought it was funny when he talked about the local bullies picking fights with kids and they finally pick Penn he is like I have been wondering when you were going to call my name. Great stuff, but at the end of the day 99% of what this guy says and does is crap!

It would be interesting to hear what Dana White thinks of this. maybe he likes it because the UFC is getting extra mileage/pub from the Penn/GSP fight than he thought?

As we saw by the hipe that lead up to the fight. BJ trained some but mostly ran his mouth and put down GSP. GSP talked little and trained hard. Nuff said. Penn lost

In closing, Penn turned to St. Pierre again and questioned his integrity.

“I don’t know how anyone would want to be the world champion with a belt around their waist that cheated to get there,” said Penn. “It just doesn’t make sense to me.”
