Tervel Dlagnev beat the heck out of a top D1 heavyweight a few years ago in the NCWA all-star match, and has consistently been beating elite D1 heavyweights in freestyle events, including Steve Mocco. I think that is enough information to suggest a D2 Champion can beat a D1 champion in wrestling.
This is a glaring exception and certainly not the norm. Virtually any D1 program in the nation would have welcomed Dlagnev, but he had his reasons for going to (and staying at) a D3 school. I know there are other examples of D2 or D3 wrestlers being competetive w/ D1 guys but, again those are rarities. Generally there is a very good reason certain guys are D1 and others wrestle at lower divisions - it is usually not close.

Agreed jayl. It is very rare, but this shows that some D2 individuals can compete and beat D1 competition. Normally, however, I think an average D1 wrestler could win Nationals at D2.

Also, to speak to Carwin's athleticism, he was predicted to be drafted in the 4th or 5th round in the 1998 NFL draft, but an injury prevented that from happening.

And to be clear, I have no idea who is going to win this fight and don't care to predict. These are both bad dudes. I just didn't like the bias here.

I tuned into the "weigh-ins" on Spike... few comments.
1. Why did they put them on tv? Seriously, how can seeing guys in their skivies on a scale help the sport? ^o)
2. There was a generous amount of "booing" toward Brock. Wow, doesn't that make ya wanna come back fight? ^o)
3. I wish people used the term sexyduster instead of cropduster interchangeably. I laughed my @$$ off when Rogan called him sexyyama. :D
4. Chris Leben was jacked and bouncing around... for weigh ins... cmon.

It was just weird for me. I don't know.
Also, Brock had CaseIH as a sponsor on his shirt... HardFreakingCore.
Just thought i'd see if anyone else caught it. Off to go watch Harold & Kumar go to White Castle. B)

I don't know if anyone else caught this, but Kurt Pellegrino did this girlie little wave when he walked out, which led me to really question my belief in his ability to beat George Sotiropolous.

CaseIH sucks, but it's still a step up from that Kubota I saw him driving in one of his tv specials. With all his money you'd think he'd buy himself a John Deere.

I like Carwin, but I'm picking Lesnar in the second round.

CaseIH is a great gig if you can get it. Hope the former Goph Champ can get another win. Cain V is coming that would be very interesting with his skill set and cardio ability.

Wow. No superlatives necessary for that card. Each fight got me more pumped than the last one. I wish Akiyama had been able to survive his fight against Leben (I had Sexyama winning a UD), but it happens.

Seriously, Lesnar by choke? I'm still in disbelief.

The bummer for Carwin is that he still looked great before gassing, but now he'll have to wait more than a year if he wants another title shot down the line. Hopefully Brock vs. Cain in November or December, winner of that fights JDS in late spring/early summer 2011, and Carwin gets the winner of that one (hopefully JDS).

that was a close fight. Brock was close to having the ref step in and Brock coming back for the choke. Two adsolute bulls. I was very please on Brocks "HUMBLE" comments. Nothing like a life threatening event to help one refile ones recipe.

Straight up sweet card.
Sexyama just let up at the wrong time... Leben makes me laugh.
I was a little concerned on the Sotiropolus (spelt that wrong) over Pelligrino call... But oh well.
Krystof lost. Not a Bonnar fan, but i mean... USA.
Brock had his fight flash before his eye. That takedown in the 2nd set the tone. he wasn't effin around no more. BIG GIGANTIC UPS to Brock and co for gettin the job done.

"I have been blessed by God." -Brock Lesnar.

It looked to me that he purposely tried to wear Carwin out in the first. He didn't bull rush right away like all of his other fights. Ali ropeadope ...

As much as i would love to believe that I think that it was from almost dying that he didn't have that same killer instinct. Hopefully after this he will get the rust off. Anyways atta boy Brock, you showed alot of heart and won alot of people over even if others thought you should have lost.

I thought it should have been over in the first. But an Arm Triangle, really? NOBODY wanted a submission. Oh well. This fight showed that basically NOBODY will touch these 2. Anybody but Brock woulda been Knocked out and nobody else hits harder than Carwin. At least we found out who the better striker is... :O

Shane Carwin...how can you not like the guy.

Carwin: Cardio Was Fine but Body Was Not
http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Carwin-Cardio-Was-Fine-but-Body-Was-Not-25483

25483
Shane Carwin punished Brock Lesnar in the first round of their heavyweight title fight Saturday at UFC 116, but the onslaught may have also cost him the bout as he grew fatigued without finishing Lesnar.

“The game plan last night was to be patient and let the fight come to you,” Carwin wrote Sunday on his blog at http://www.shane-carwin.com. “When I had him in trouble, the ref (kept) saying he was going to stop it and then towards the end of the (first round), my body began to seize up. In between rounds I could not move my legs and had what felt like a whole body cramp. My cardio was fine, but my body was not. What can you do? You have to stand up and face your opponent.”

The second round was a much different story. Lesnar scored a takedown early, moved to mount briefly and then jumped to the side to submit Carwin with an arm-triangle choke at 2:19.

“Heading into the second, I knew I (needed) to finish the fight or I was going to be in trouble,” Carwin wrote. “Much like the champion he is, I am sure Brock was thinking the same thing. I had zero takedown defense, as my legs were dead to me and the rest is, as they say, history.”

The loss was Carwin’s first in 13 professional fights. He said on his blog that losing is what happens on the way to winning and promised to be back better than ever.

“Brock was a good guy through this entire fight,” Carwin wrote. “He did not talk a bunch of smack and he fought like a warrior. He did what he needed to do to keep his belt, and that is what being a champion is all about. I am going to have to claw my way back to the top, but I wouldn't want it any other way. I know I belong with the very best; all I need to do is prove it again.”

Great fight...Brock is one tough SOB. i truly thought he wouldn't get through the first round. My son watched the fight at Majors and he said you could hear a pin drop when Brock was taking his lumps....but the bar just exploded when the fight was stopped.

Man the UFC and MMA has come such a long way....

I remember when I was first hired at the company I am at now back in 1999....Frank Shamrock and Tito Ortiz were scheduled for the upcoming weekend..first fight to be broken up into rounds...first 5 round fight...no more 20 first minute periods and 5 extra minutes if over time was declared. some pretty significant milestones....Tito was a brash young upstart...who was single handedly destroying everyone from the Lion's Den...Ken Shamrocks elite hand picked group of MMA superstars...at the time..this was as good as it gets...

.I remember asking a couple of workers if they were going to watch...their response was "Why are you watching that garbage?"...I think they would have preferred me asking to go clubbing baby seals....

Fast forward to this week....lots of hype...everyone knew about the fight...and EVERYONE was an expert on what Brock needed to do to win this fight...

Man, I love my sport...Oh by the way, I klcked everyone's a$$ in UFC fantasy picks this weekend.

Strong neck muscles have absolutely nothing with ones ability to rebound from being tapped on the chin.
Rebound maybe not... but strong neck muscles do infact have alot to do with the damage someone can withstand without being knocked out or "rocked"
Yeah....so there :P

JD, you're complaining with second?
OMG, I got last. We don't use OMG or other great online acronyms enough on here.
Point is, I checked it Saturday night when I got home, and almost felt a tear go down my face. Just then, I remembered the wonderful Rockstar Punched I had while watching Seth Petruzelli get pounded and everything was right in the world.

Thanks GREAT fight. No it should not have been stopped Lesnar always defending himself. Carwin was gassing after the 2:30 mark of the first round. Nice win after the illness against a very dangerous opponent. Bring on Cain V he will be tough but much less of a threat to finish it with one punch imo.

You guys are all equally nuts.
I love this forum for the simple reason that you guys are all crazy and love MMA.
This card, changed the game. The Heavyweight class is gaining some major respect in MMA.

But in retrospect, I just really love Rockstar and Dr. Dre.
and for the record, i would bet on me in a fight against Seth Petruzelli. ;)

If Lesnar really develps his sub game he would really become dangerous with his quicks long arms and strenth. Only six fights in lots of improving still to come.

That's what I am thinking as well....Rogan put it best....Most guys have been fighting for years and years.....any improvement, although measureable, wouldn't be as significant as Brock is 6 fights into his career.
