I am cutting a lot of weight and i recently got the drink Ensure. I have not tried it yet, but i was wondering if it is a good alternative to breakfast. I usually try to have a bowl of cereal for breakfast, a sandwich or salad at lunch, and a small dinner after practice, with a granola bar thrown in there throughout the day. I was wondering if Ensure would be a good way to lose a little bit more weight. also would it be good for after weigh-ins? |

It would be better than having a bowl of cereal in the morning. |

Several studies have actually shown that chocolate milk is THE best recovery drink out there... no joke! Personally, after weigh-ins I drink some chocolate milk, Pedialyte, and Perrier mineral water (as I've heard it replenishes you faster than normal water). As for the meals you're eating, that doesn't seem to be enough "fuel" for the "fire"?! I would reconsider this diet you're on, and find something that fits the needs of an active wrestler. Good Luck, Jake Clark |

Ensure drinks are primarily used to gain weight, especially for older people or those severely underweight. It's probably pretty healthy and a decent recovery drink, but I don't think it will help much for losing weight. |

Here is a great informational source about diets and athletes... http://www.usada.org/diet/ provides good information for what is good to eat and not eat... doesn't say much about weight loss but like one of the other posts you still need to provide fuel for your fire! Otherwise you are not doing justice to your athletic ability.. |

I agree, but you may want to find a replacement for the chocolate milk if you are lactose intolerant. |

I think the chocolate milk studies that you cite, might have been performed by thirsty 16 year olds! |

A physiologist at the human performance lab of Indiana University is one of the people who conducted research and advocates chocolate milk as a recovery drink. I'm sure if you google it you will find more. |

Sport Shakes and Wheaties Fuel Bars are my miracle makers after weigh-ins. Along with Smart Water while wrestling/ warming up or and/ or a Vitamin Water/ Gatorade (depends if i have a weigh-in the next day if I do an extra drink). |

Not sure if you're still checking this thread or not, but here's my two cents. I would strongly recommend The Grappler's Guide to Nutritionby Dr. John Berardi. It features a program for healthy eating that isn't terribly difficult to follow. In addition, it also covers supplementation as well as weight cutting. I would stay away from the Ensure, as that it's probably loaded with sugar. Instead, if you're looking for an alternative to breakfast maybe consider a whey protein shake possibly blended with fresh fruit. Overall, Berardi's approach is: eating 4-6 small meals daily. Green vegetables at every meal. An ounce of water per lb of body weight per day. No carbs except for fruits & vegetables (you want foods with a low glycemic index). Only calorie free drinks other than protein shakes. This is simplified, but I lost 40lbs following this program & exercising, Also, keep in mind that using chocolate milk as a recovery drink means drinking a cup following a strenuous workout. It's not an excuse to have chocolate milk whenever you want. |
