Whats the rule if a wrestler spits out or looses his mouth guard in a match? Is it injury time, stalling, equipment violation or no call at all like headgear? |

Rod- Don't mean to but in but if Wrestler has Braces doesn't it need to be blowen dead immediately because mouth gaurd is reguired at that point for safety, and if he is spitting it out can it not be called stalling or even unsportsmenlike. |

Good question. I will have to get a ruling from the high school league. But I haven't blown it dead. Headgear is there for protection as well and is required however we don't blow it dead when it falls off. Nor do we penalize, or call it stalling. |

Word from Byron and Ron is that there is no penalty or stalling. It becomes an officials timeout to replace the mouth guard just like headgear. Rod |

Same subject but slightly different context. Some kids don't like those things. I've seen matches where a kid pulls it out of his mouth and throws it, multiple times. So, should the answer be put in context of (a) accidental and (b) repeated & intentional? I'd think (b) might have a different answer, especially if the intent is to stop the action/generate a break. |

I haven't talked to Byron Olson or Ron Ackerman on this scenario but I would bet they wouldn't change their ruling. I don't see a reason to stop the action to replace a mouth guard. I treat the mouth guard just like the headgear. Both are there for safety reasons and both are required. When they come dislodge I will allow any scoring action or pinning action to complete. If there is no action or pinning then I would stop and give mouth guard back to the wrestler. (similar to what you see us do with headgear) . I have never worn a mouth guard but from what I hear they can be tough to breathe with, or even sometimes choke on. So I would have no problem if a wrestler spit it out so he can breathe, remember we are worried about the safety of the wrestlers 1st. In my book he isn't doing it to get a break or a breather. Now if one kept doing it over and over for no reason and you feel like the wrestler is doing it to get fresh starts maybe you could go with stalling. Honestly it hasn't been a problem that I have seen in my 20+ years of officiating. Rod Frost |

If the kids gonna spit his mouthguard to try and stall, I hope they don't stop the match, and the kid gets his lips ripped open for a little "Blood" time!! |
