I'm probably going to start training here in the near future. Not to fight in MMA but maybe for fitness and to gid rid of some of my old guy wrestling energy. :D I'm looking a joining a Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ gym, not sure which one yet. I have a few on the list. |

there are a couple of questions that can help narrow down the choices. A lot of BJJ gyms train primarily with a gi so if you have a strong preference for gi vs no-gi, or would be inerested in both that can help with finding a good fit. Also, some gyms work a lot on technique and don't roll as much as others so again, that can be worth looking at. Places I visit at times for open mat or a drop-in class include McCunes - in Brooklyn Park. Midwest Center for Movement - odd name but good gym associated with the McCunes - they are in Hudson The Academy - formerly known as Minnesota Martial Arts Academy - probably the top gym in terms of local talent with a number of UFC guys that train there on occasion. A broad mix of skills so beginners are welcome and fit in, but also some world class fighters and multiple former AA college wrestlers Gracie Barra - St Louis Park - focus on gi here, but close to the same talent level as The Academy, a lot fo former Academystudents here. Great guys too, work with everyone Minnosota Top Team - not been there myself, but a good reputation for no-gi, the school that focuses on no-gi the most is Next Level Combat; 10th planet jui jitsu; listed in St Paul, but actually Woodbury. This school is associated with Eddie Bravo, Tim Gillettte is head instructor. Tim's good, the school is new and thier guys are doing well in tournaments I train at Warriors Cove and it fits me well. Focus on MMA and BJJ with a little more MMA than some gyms but I get all the BJJ and grappling I want/need (which is a lot). WC is associated with Rickson Gracie and has locations in Little Canada, St Luis Park and Burnsville. Most places offer one or two free classes. Try a free class and observe a few before committing. There are a lot of gyms and a fair amount of comeptition for students. Like anything, some schools are better than others, safer than others, etc. I would fully endorse the ones I mentioned here - all have great instructions, are safe, have good people that train there, and are seriois about training and safety. I would be interested to find out where you are looking at and if you join a gym. |

I have been looking at Warriors Cove but also Combat Ju-Jitsu in minneapolis. Both seem like good schools but CJJ is lower cost. I get two days per week to traing (monday and thursday) due to work/travel schedules so I'm restricted somewhat. CJJ $70, WC is around $120. WC has more classes so it's a good value if you plan to go a lot. From what I uderstand both schools do well in competition. |

I'd love to find somewhere to train MMA/jiu-jitsu/boxing, but it's all basically non-existent up in Bemidji. |

It seems like I recall hearing of a few bars in Bemidji (they will go unnamed) that have a lot of MMA/Jiu-Jitsu/boxing going on around back almost any time of the week, but especially Friday and Saturday night! |

My boy trains BJJ in Edina with Alianze. The program is split between competition and instructional BJJ . All are welcome in either arena. They also run a cross fit program aside for additional strength and conditioning. Several guys are world and Pan Am place finnishers and at least 3 champs between the two tournaments"that I know of." Note worthy to mention - They have a team of purple belts leaveing this week to train in Brazil at Alianze World . The kid is pumped about that. Anywho! Bottom line is that there is someone who is training at your level. There are plenty of guys over 40 working out for fitness and competition, who seem to be having alot of fun being there. I hope you find what you were looking for, its a great Dojo/sport and an awesome culture. We have meet some really quality people at dojo's around the metro and country. They have a web site but its new and I'm not sure what it is. However the old one was revolution defense and fitness and maybe check cross fit mn. good luck. |

I don't have a car, so I'm pretty limited. I'm working on finding somewhere in the cities for the summer. |

Depends on the price range you are looking for. Minnesota Martial Arts Academy has by far the most talented and most experienced staff in the Minnesota. This is not a knock on any gym out there. Minnesota Martial Arts Academy has had the most success and if you want to be best you have to be around the best. The best is at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy. There are a lot of quality MMA clubs in minnesota. I have trained at a lot of them. Currently training at Gracie Barra in St. Louis Park. First, you have to figure out what kind of styles you are interested in trying then find some gyms that fit your criteria in the area you are looking to train at. |

I agree with your post. If you are looking at the best partners, instructors, facilities, etc. I would probably randkthem MMAA, Gracie Barra, Warriors Cove (where I train) But it depends upon what you want to get out of the training also. There are, thankfully, a lot of great places to train in the Twin Cities |
