Wrestler A shoots a double and brings wrestler B straight to his back. Both wrestlers are inside the edge of the mat, but about 12 inches away. Wrestler B immediately digs in his heals and pushes away from wrestler A and goes off the mat. Referee awards wrestler A 1 point for fleeing the mat. Same dual different weight. Exact same situation excepts when the wrestlers fall to the mat they are about 1 yard from the edge. Wrestler B does the exact same thing, digs in his heels and moves away from A. But, a count of two took place and the referee awarded 2 nearfall points, but a fleeing the mat point wasn't given. He explained that it wasn't fleeing the mat because back points were awarded. What are your thoughts? I am of the belief that wrestler B would have reacted the same way if in the middle of the mat. Thanks |

Correct calls - both. Good official - in the first sequence the takedown should have been awarded in addition to the fleeing the mat point. |

The takedown was awarded. It seems to be a strange rule. |

From rule book. Rule 7.3.1 Going out of the wrestling area or forcing an opponent out of the wrestling area, by either wrestler at any time as a means of avoiding wrestling is a technical violation. Both wrestlers should make every effort to remain inbounds. When the referee feels the wrestler has failed to make every effort to stay inbounds the offending wrestler shall be penalized. There can be no technical violation of fleeing the mat if near fall points have been earned. Now what I look for in fleeing the mat is what I call the 3 D's. (Distance, Direction and Defense). I tell teams during my pre-meet that's what I look for. For me to call fleeing all 3 have to be there. What distance did he travel to get out of the move, what direction and did he defend at the edge or not... |
