Galehdari Climbing the Ladder...

MN MMA NEWS

Savage Entertainment is making its long-awaited return to Neisen's Sports Bar in Savage, and the organization is bringing the MNMMANEWS Fighter of the Year and the Amateur of the Year with it.

Oh yeah, and those pesky Canadians are back!

"Blizzard Bash" is set for 8:30 p.m. Saturday, with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 for general admission, $50 for VIP seating and $75 for ringside tables. Tickets will be available at the door or online at www.savage-entertainment.com

In addition to some of the top names from Minnesota, Saturday also will be a showcase of many of the best 135-pounders from the Midwest.

Fighting in the night's main event is one half of the "Bash Brothers," MN Militia standout Marvin Blumer.

Blumer, who is a coming off a tough decision loss in Japan, will take on FAFIA's Rocco Maggiore.

Blumer is currently 5-2 as a professional and is ranked No. 5 in the latest MNMMANEWS Unified Rankings. Maggiore recently fell out of the rankings, but he's 3-1 and coming off an impressive win over Dan Wales in St. Cloud earlier this month.

"I think it's a good fight for both guys," matchmaker Austin Judge said. "Marvin is coming off a tough loss over in Tokyo. He was taken down and controlled on the ground despite attempting many submissions. The Japanese fighter was very reluctant to stand with him and wouldn't really open up on the ground. On the other hand, Rocco is coming off a recent win over Wales. He showed a lot of patience and poise in that fight against an experienced pro. I think at this point in their careers, it's a good fight for both guys. Marvin is looking for a big win, and Rocco looks to keep winning and keep climbing. He's asked for the toughest guys Minnesota has to offer at the weight."

While Blumer and Maggiore hope to dazzle fans in the main event, another 135-pound

matchup might be the most intriguing. Compound MMA's Jared Chaney is returning to action after nearly a year away from the sport.

Chaney is considered a ground expert, and he has a 3-3 professional record. He was ranked at 135 prior to taking time away from the sport.

Chaney will take on another formerly ranked 135-pounder on Saturday -- Jovon Myles. He's also been away from the sport since August. Myles has just a 2-4 record, but he holds solid wins over guys like Adam Packer and Jake Milkanin.

Judge believes this likely will be the fight of the night.

"This is one of those fights that we put on the card simply because it's one that I want to see as a fan," Judge said. "This might not be a huge fight as far as the state is concerned because they maybe don't know about these guys. But trust me, if you're going to buy a ticket it, this one is worth the price alone. This one should bring you through the door. Chaney is a crafty, smart fighter. He uses his head in the there, and he's an engineer by trade. Jovon is very athletic. He's tough, he's calm and poised when he's in the cage. I would seriously be surprised if this wasn't the fight of the night. I'm so excited to see it. You might look at their records and think it's not great, but these are two of the toughest 135ers around."

MNMMANEWS Fighter of the year Mitch Jackson will be returning to action Saturday. Jackson, who is coming off a win over Nate Schut, is the top-ranked 145-pounder in Minnesota and holds a 19-2 record.

The American Top Team of Savage prospect is set to take on veteran Bobby Ferrier. Though he's won three of his last five fights, Ferrier holds a career mark of 8-10. He's coming off a win over Wes Ronchi at Fearless Fighting Championship 10.

Thought Jackson had been planning to drop down to 135 pounds, he will meet Ferrier at 145.

"This is not the fight we were planning for, but Mitch's original opponent backed out on us," Judge said. "As usual, Bobby stepped up to the plate. Bobby is going to have a strength advantage and he is a solid wrestler. Some people say the bigger, stronger wrestler always wins, but obviously this is going to be a tough one for Bobby. I'd say there's a chance he could put Mitch on his back, and he hasn't been there very often. It's obviously a tough matchup for Bobby, but I don't think it's a gimme for Mitch, either."

MNMMANEWS Amateur of the Year Jamal Galehdari also is returning to action. Galehdari, who was 6-0 as an amateur, will take on North Dakota's M.J. Gayton at 135 pounds.

Galehdari is coming off a win over Canadan's Brock Peters for the Savage Entertainment 145-pound amateur title. He also holds the organization's 135-pound amateur title. Galehdari is all the way up to No. 6 in the latest rankings at 135.

"Gayton has had all his fights up in North Dakota, but he's a very experienced pro and fought a lot of tough guys," Judge said. "He started fighting at 170, so he's come down in weight quite a bit. Gayton has a few wins by submission and he's pretty decent on the ground. I think it's a good test for Jamal, because Gayton is coming down here expecting to get a win. He's going to bring it right at Jamal."

Veteran journeyman Bruce Johnson will take on North Dakota's Steve Schumacher at 170. Johnson's teammate, Ricky Sveen, also will be in action against FAFIA's William Kassulker at 175.

"Steve is out of Bismarck Combat Sports, and most of his wins are by some kind of choke, and he's a big, physical guy," Judge said. "He's pretty well versed in subs. Everybody knows Bruce, and they know he's going in there trying to knock somebody's head into the front row. So I feel like Steve will be looking for a little ground and pound, and Bruce will be looking for the big knockout. We'll see which one happens.

"lRicky trains with Bruce now that Team Crazy is defunct. He's just another tough kid. He lost to John Rafuse, but he had dropped John with a head kick before that. Kassulker is a FAFIA guy, and I know every one of those guys is tough. They all bring it."

The final pro fight is set for 160 pounds, with Jason Benson taking on Jamie Bowar.

"Both of these guys have similar styles," Judge said. "Benson is from Total Carnage MMA, where he trains under Tony Norlander, and Bowar trains at Focus MMA. They're similar in that they both would rather stand and trade punches on their feet. It's an even fight and it could end up being one of the more entertaining fights on Saturday. We'll see who can get that knockout first."

In addition to the seven pro bouts, Judge has lined up eight amateur fights.

At 155 pounds, Jake Ouradnik will take on Todd Nordgart. Ouradnik is looking to bounce back after a speedy knockout loss to Brandon Gardner, who's also fighting Saturday. The Canadian will take on Jordan Thurstin of FAFIA at 155 pounds.

Ouradnik is a monster at 155, and the loss to Gardner was the only one of his amateur career. Nordgart is 1-0 and he trains with Milaca MMA.

"Nordgart had a great showing on our October show," Judge said. "He finally caught his guy in a guillotine in the second round, but that was a very entertaining fight. Jake is looking to bounce back after that loss, and Nordgart is looking to step up his competition. I expect this to be a good fight. They're both solid prospects at 155."

FAFIA's Jake "The Highlander" Immel also will look to bounce back after a loss -- he suffered a quick setback against undefeated amateur Marzett Turner during the last Target Center show.

Immel will take on ATT of Savage's Justin Trangsrud.

"This should be a good one," Judge said. "I can see the taller Immel giving Justin some trouble. But Trangsrud does have massive biceps. He pounds the weights, and he will definitely have the biggest arms in the cage. He's a young, strong, powerful kid, and I'm sure he'll be looking to put a glove on Immel's chin. It could be interesting. I'd say Immel probably has the advantage on the ground with his length. But Trangsrud will have the brute strength and punching power advantage.

Canadian Blair Gutta, who trains at Leading Edge MMA in Thunder Bay along with Gardner and Peters, is back in action Saturday. The dangerous 135-pounder will look to bounce back after a loss to Galehdari against Charlie Isle of FAFIA.

Gutta is an extremely powerful 135-pounder. He knocked out Ryan Brown on the ground, while in Brown's guard.

"I love that kid. He's so awesome, and he think he's Superman, but I love it," Judge said. "He's coming down from Thunder Bay, and he's just one of the toughest 135ers around. He hits like a truck, and his wrestling is pretty solid too. Charlie is a FAFIA guy, and any time we bring in a guy from FAFIA, we know they will bring it. He's tougher than hell. To me, this is probably looking like the amateur fight of the night."

Heavyweight J.D. Greenberg is set to square off against Matt Thurstin. Greenberg wrestled at Stillwater High School, along with Jackson and Karl Knothe. Thurstin is another FAFIA product.

"JD has those deep wrestling roots, wrestling with guys like Jackson and Knothe," Judge said. "He's training with Shane Dezee over at Focus MMA. I'm sure his game plan is to come in and wrestle to submit. Thurstin is pretty well versed in the ground game, though, too, as most FAFIA guys are. With so few heavyweights competing here in Minnesota, I'd say these are a couple of new guys who could climb the ladder quickly."

ATT of Savage's Mitch White is set to take on replacement Alex Gonzalez at 135. "Mitch is a super tough kid," Judge said. "He's just 19 and was preparing to fight at 125. Alex Gonzalez stepped up on short notice. He's very, very tough. He's another tough young kid who will bring it. I think both guys could climb the ladder some day at 125. I'm expecting a serious brawl in this one."

Other amateur matchups include Tommy Woodner vs. Chris Santiago at 205 and Andrew Leonard against B.J. Haugdahl at 145.
