Just a reminder that Junior State is this weekend at Augsburg college. All information including how to pre-register can be found at www.mnusawrestling.org. Also a reminder that the entry fee is cheaper if you pre-register than it is at the door.

Where can you find a list of registered kids?

I saw there is road construction on 94, do we need to find an alternative route? If so, any suggestions?? We are coming in from the west.

Question: At a state tournament, doesn't a wrestler deserve to have a coach in his corner?. Example: At junior state, our club had 5 kids wrestling, 2 of them at 138, our coach was in the wrestling room with one of them, while the other was called to mat 1 in the main gym. The wrestler at mat 1 told the younger, bearded referee he was waiting for his coach, the referee told him not so nicely "you dont need a coach, now lets wrestle". At a state tourney when a lot of the opponents are place winners at HS state, doesnt a kid deserve a coach going against some of these elite wrestlers? And yes, the coachless wrestler was my son, and thank you to John Thorn for stepping in when I asked him and coaching my son after the match started, and for giving him some GREAT advice after his match. I know at this age, a wrestler should know what to do, but as a still learning dad who cant coach very well, dont these kids deserve to have someine knowledgable in their corner? Thanks for any input on this.

In the past I have told wrestlers I train if there is no coach tell the ref and stay in your corner. They should/have said over the PA Team (..........)coach needed on mat 4. That will perk someones ears up to step in like coach Thorn did. Everyone needs a corner person.

Thanks for the flier info on cadets!!!

That is a great question. As a newer official I have been told to wait and to not to wait depending on the level (juniors, cadets, schoolboys etc). I can see both sides of this one being that my son is still wrestling along with some other kids we bring to the tourney. When I was a new parent to wrestling, if my son didn't have a coach in the corner I would have gone off the deep end ( I still do anyways sometimes :) ) I just thought that it is a plain old MUST. Now that I have been seasoned a little more I find it easier to not be in the corner or have someone in their corner, I wonder sometimes if I am short changing the kids. When our athletes are at the World Team Trials or Olympic Team Trials they certainly have coaches in their corners and they are very seasoned wrestlers at that point. OHS I think you have a valid point. Thanks to all of the coaches who step up and help out in the shortage times when the regular coach can't be in two places at once.

I'm sure some officials will disagree with me but we should not be making any kid wrestle without a coach. And as a coach I've told kids not to step on the mat without a coach there...you get 3 calls to the mat anyway. They can't make you forfeit the match without making those 3 calls. :D
