We've participated in MN/USA events for the last four years and it's been great. However if I could offer one bit of constructive criticism, it would be in addressing the volunteer efforts that help run the tournament. Why don't we simply pay people to perform these duties? In fact, why don't we provide enough funding to pay for volunteer: lodging, meals, and enough back-ups so the workers can have a break to enjoy much of the tournament too?

I've been at the pre-tournament coaching meetings where I've been asked to officiate kids. Admittedly, I don't know how the scoring works (some of the time) when I'm watching my own kid(s). I readily admit that I should be the last person to officiate a qualifying event; much less the MN/USA State Championships. You don't want me to officiate your kid; believe me.

I'd gladly pay $5-$10 more for my wrestler so it could be forwarded to the workers of this tournament or any of the qualifying tournaments. I, for one, would enjoy the tournament(s) much more if I knew that I wasn't going to be asked to: officiate, score, or provide security during the tournament. I share this because I'd suggest that we take a page out of the NYWA model and allow the workers to be paid...and the participants to focus on the competition.

I know the present model won't be changed; at least this year. I'll be the lone coach for 4-5 wrestlers during the event; which will keep me busy. If I can volunteer at a table when my wrestlers aren't up, I'd gladly lend a hand.

To all of the volunteers, I applaud your efforts. I don't want this post to detract from your efforts. I simply think this all could be taken care of if we all take care of the people who are taking care of us...as participants.

We have looked into this before. I know some people would like to hangout and watch some great wrestling. But I feel the increase per wrestler to pay for the venue setup, tableworkers, refs, pairers, security and weigh-in staff would be to great and some wrestlers would not be able to attend because of the cost.
At Folkstyle State this year I did a drawing for the tableworkers that worked the last day and were there until the end of the tournament. I want them to know just how much I Appreciated them sticking around until the end. I know it makes for a long weekend.
I will work on getting what the increase would be per wrestler to pay all the workers and bring this to the October membership Board meeting for the board and members to review.
liv-Thanks for your help at the tournaments and suggestions.
If there is anyone else with suggestions feel free to contact me..
On that note I still have 9 tables left to fill at State ^_^
Thanks

Awesome. It's great when suggestions are forwarded. I appreciate the feedback.

With 1,300 participants, following parents, coaches, etc.; I would assume that even $5 per entry fee and $1 increase per fan would provide a nice pot of funds to share with the great people (like yourself) who provide these wonderful opportunities.

Thank you!

I refuse to give up on the idea that we ARE and SHOULD REMAIN a volunteer organization, and I'm not ready to see that change- there have already been changes in the way we do things that I'm trying to adjust to-
but liv, you are an experienced wrestling supporter too, and your opinion has value-- I know youre not the only one to have this idea, I've heard it suggested before- - so just because I'm admittedly "old school" doesn't mean my ideas are the only ones that count

Liv,

thanks for your feedback ... actually last year, I paid security staff for both the folkstyle and FS envents. We used primarly wrestlers from RCTC and augmented with some volunteers. This year we are trying to do exclsively a volunteer staff. We made it through Folkstyle which is the hard one. This one should be much easier.

As was stated, we appreciate any and all improvement ideas and it sounds like Laurie has the ball rolling to take a closer look at this item.

thanks for all you do for wrestling.

Sincerely,

Tom Hall

tableworker:
yup-we've been around, haven't we ? :P

So anyway, it's easy for me to just show up and sit down and say; NO, let's not pay anybody to do things, we need things to stay the same and just
get volunteers-
yet it's many others, (like YOU, my dear)who are the ones who work tirelessly each and every tournament to make that happen- it's a lot of organizing and asking and asking yet again- so I thank all of you

see you next week-
