Congratulations to all of the Cadets! Nice job by everyone, but especially Manville. 8-0 National Champion without giving up a single point. Impressive!

Manville bonus. I'll buy a Chas Betts Olympic shirt for anyone who can take and post a picture of Manville eating in a restaurant wearing his heargear!

Freestyle is coming, good luck Cadets.

Juniors, good luck tomorrow.

Minnesotans make a statement at US Wrestling Tournament
By: Aaron Saunders, INFORUM
Published July 16, 2012, 11:30 PM

FARGO - After winning three individual cadet titles and the team national championship at the USA Junior and Cadet National Championships, no one can deny that Minnesota has the best Cadet Greco-Roman wrestlers in the nation.

"We are very proud to be a part of this team, and it looks like we are going to win a national championship," David Manville said before the outcome was finalized.

Minnesota did win that national championship, and Manville's son Mason played a big part in the victory by defeating Dustin Williams from Kansas in the 145-pound Greco final.

"I am really proud he has worked his whole life for this and his goal is the Olympics, and he is on the right process and with the right people helping him get to the 2016 Olympics," said Manville.

Team Minnesota also received big contributions from Mitchell McKee and Lance Benick, each of whom took home national titles by defeating Kyle Bierdumpfel of New Jersey and Landon Pelham of Michigan, respectively.

"It's fun being on teams like this. Everybody pushes everybody to do their best, everybody supports each other to do their best," said McKee. "You know these guys because you have been on so many teams every year and you work with them and you have fun with them, so you are not just with some random guys."

McKee and Benick are two of the most versatile wrestlers in the tournament and will be competing in the Cadet Freestyle wrestling competition later this week in hopes of winning the 2012 wrestling Triple Crown in their weight classes.

Wrestlers win the Triple Crown by claiming national championships in Folkstyle, Greco-Roman, and Freestyle wrestling all in the same year.

"Greco is what I was most worried about, so now that I got past Greco, I feel pretty confident," said Benick who now holds titles in Folkstyle and Greco and will attempt to complete the sweep by the end of the tournament.

The 15-year-old's win by pin also sealed Minnesota's team victory.

"It feels pretty good. I like having the pressure on me. I like being the final link to the chain," said Benick who added that everybody did something to help the team to the No. 1 spot.

While the Forest Lake native was the final link, it was no doubt a team victory, as Minnesota had a total of 12 All-Americans.

The team's overall success can perhaps be attributed to a diverse and experienced group of coaches who helped the wrestlers during training camp.

"My son got to train with the best coaches in America this year and it shows," said Manville

I apologize if there is an obvious answer, but don't have the time today to look... Did Illinois have a considerable more wrestlers than MN for juniors? When I looked quick it seemed MN was missing some juniors that I thought would be there....

Team Minnesota continues dominance at USA Wrestling Tournament
By: Glenn Pursley, INFORUM
Published July 17, 2012, 11:30 PM

FARGO - Jared Oftendahl of Chaska, Minn., defeated Javier Vieyra of Salina, Kan., in the 113-pound weight class to win the USA Junior National Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship on Tuesday at the Fargodome.

"It's crazy," Oftendahl said of winning the tournament. "It's a big experience, it feels amazing."

Oftendahl's first-place finish marks the fourth title won by Team Minnesota at the 2012 Junior and Cadet Championships. On Monday, Mason Manville, Mitchell McKee and Lance Benick all won titles in their weight class.

Vieyra and Oftendahl were locked in the center for 90 seconds of the two-minute first round until Vieyra managed to take down Oftendahl and expose his back to the mat and took period one 2-0. Oftendahl fought back to win the second round 1-0 after pushing out Vieyra to send the match to a third round.

Oftendahl learned from his success in the second round and something clicked. He knew how to win the title.

"Even though I lost the first period, I knew the match was mine," Oftendahl said. "I got the push out in the second period and I realized if I did the same thing again I could get it again, so I just went for the exact same thing."

Vieyra was ready this time and being in the clinch position, he was able to take control of Oftendahl and the match with time ticking away. But Oftendahl was able to fend off Vieyra and not allow the flip to take the match 1-2, 1-0, 1-0. Team Minnesota finished in fourth place in the Juniors with 37 points.

"It was really nerve-racking going into the start," Oftendahl said. "As soon as the first period ended, I knew I could do it. Last year, I thought I should have got it. This year, I finally did."

His road to the championship wasn't an easy one, as he was up against Mitchell Rogaliner earlier in the tournament. Rogaliner has knocked him out of the tournament for the past three years.

Oftendahl was able to take care of Rogaliner in three periods and defeated Jordan Wigger in the semifinals to make it to the championship match.

"Once I beat (Rogaliner) I knew this tournament was mine," said Oftendahl, who will be a senior at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in St. Louis Park, Minn.

Ryan Blees of Bismarck wrestled in the 145-pound Greco final against U.S. cadet world team member and three-time state champion Grant LaMont of Mapleton, Utah.

Blees, a junior from Bismarck High, took fourth place at last year's championships in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle and won the North Dakota state title when he was a freshman and a sophomore. LaMont pinned Blees at 1:42 in the second period in the 145-pound title.

"It felt good right before, but it definitely didn't end the way I wanted it to," Blees said of the match. "He's a tough kid. I've wrestled him a couple of times and never beat him, but I wrestled hard to get here and had some tough matches and I wrestled solid against them.

"It's nice knowing you got up there but next year I'm definitely going to be working for a first place finish in that match."

Blees shut out every wrestler he faced leading up to 2-0, 6-0 victory over Alex Abono of California in the semifinals to face LaMont in the championship match.

I want to thank all the coaches, Larry Allar, Brandon Paulsen, Jared Lawrence, Dave Zuniga, Dudley Flodeen (Flodeen and Paulsen were in his corner for all 8 Matches), the entire MNUSA coaching staff, the entire BSM coaching staff...all the table workers, refs, and pairers, and camp organizers who work relentlessly every year and have been there since Jarred was 6...and all the kids that beat him from MN, which made them all better, and everyone else who believed in him all these years...it takes and entire wrestling community to raise a champion....thank you all!!!!

Looking at the brackets - Can he still be an All - American? I was hoping that he would wrestle McGee again. Also they usually have left over MN wrestling jackets and t-shirts for sale- are there any this year?

Wrestling dad will return to North Dakota to hunt pheasants
By: Jeff Kolpack, INFORUM
Published July 18, 2012, 11:30 PM

FARGO - A trip from Newport News, Va., to Fargo to watch his son wrestle in the USA Junior and Cadet national tournament turned into quite the hunting connection for Paul Starner. It was an example of being in the right place at the right time.

That hasn't always been the case for the wounded Marine veteran, who lost his right leg in an explosion while serving in Afghanistan. He was in Scheels All Sports store in Fargo this week, admiring a couple of Elk that were mounted in the hunting department.

The man who shot them, Bill Kiefer, happened to be there. Starner went into the story how he will be going to Colorado to hunt Elk as part of the Wounded Warrior Project, the group that aids the recovery of veterans. And that's when the idea hit Kiefer: this won’t be you’re only trip to North Dakota.

"I thought we could figure a way to get everybody to come back and pheasant hunt," Kiefer said.

Kiefer is providing Starner, his father Stephen Starner, his son Hunter Starner and a coach in his son's Virginia wrestling program, - Chuck Hudgins - transportation, lodging and food to hunt pheasants in both eastern and western North Dakota, most likely in November.

"I was just shocked," Paul Starner said. "It shows there are still people out there who appreciate and understand what we do."

Starner has been a Marine since 1993. He did tours in Iraq in 2004 and 2008 in addition to the Afghanistan tour in 2010. He endured injuries to shrapnel in Iraq during a fire fight, when a bullet hit a cement wall next to him.

His leg injury was the result of his vehicle driving over a roadside bomb. He's still recovering with the latest surgery to fuse his left ankle. He walks with a prosthetic on his right leg.

"Trying to walk on a prosthetic leg isn't easy, either," he said.

But it hasn't stopped him from hunting. The sport provides a nice diversion from the daily challenges of rehabilitation.

"It's the one thing I've found that I can still do," Starner said.

And thanks to Kiefer, he'll be doing it in North Dakota.

"It's kind of what Bill said to me: it was meant to be," Starner said.
