Not sure if this came up already...but every olympics this question comes up from at least one "non-wrestling" person I know...

"Why, if the whole world wrestles Freestyle/Greco does the U.S. still have Folkstyle?"
"Why, if the whole world plays soccer, does the US still have football?"

Because we like it.

It also entertains the vast majority of the fans.

Soccer and US Football aren't the same.....and we are not training guys at American Football, then trying to send them to the Olympics in Soccer.

That said....I agree Folkstyle is fan/coach-friendly...yet, is the style itself responsible for any growth the sport has seen? If NFHS went to Freestyle......would numbers drop?

Folkstyle is so engrained into American wrestling I just don't see a scenario that it ever gets removed. From youth programs to college so many people have poured their lives into Folkstyle. I think the switch to freestyle (why would they pick freestyle over Greco) would kill youth & HS wrestling. There are many many kids & coaches that have never wrestling freestyle or Greco (me being one of them, I played baseball in the spring & summer). I think the number of coaches, athletes & opportunities would plummet & everything would start over at square one in trying to build up wrestling.

Because it is better.

One thing I never used to like, but am now in favor of is the push out rule. Way more of the action stays in the middle and in folkstyle a push out would not hurt as much because it is only one point where as a TD is 2. A vast majority, not all, of the push outs I saw rewarded the offensive wrestler. There were still times where I guy did some good sideline gymnastics to get a pushout on the other guys offense but these were infrequent.

I still hate the fact that you can win 1-0, 1-0 from par terre. These two styles are supposed to be way more focused on the feet and many Greco matches end with no scoring from the feet. It seems like to me there should at least be a third period.

I'm late to the discussion, however one item in regards to FS/GR is the fact that someone can win the period 1-1 just because they scored the last point... I can understand the argument it increases the strategy but I would much rather have it be the person who score last could choose top/bottom and have a 30 sec period if top guy doesn't score bottom guy wins the period... just my two cents... Or to increase action have first point scored be the person who chose... either way I personally think it would be better...
