Last year I started to see wrestlers throw a punch once in a while. Yesterday at a tournament, I saw it happen several times with more than 1 wrestler. I also saw in one match where the kid did it 3 times out right punching a kid on the side of the head during the duration of a single match. What are the rules and what are the refs SUPPOSED to do in these situation? None of the wrestlers matches got "stopped" for a loss. The refs barely if at all addressed it. None of the wrestlers got booted off the mats or out of the tournament for doing it. In all cases I didn't see coaches pull the kid aside and address it at the time. Honestly, I feel a kid loses it---they should be walked out with the parent. To me this seems to be a stupid and nasty trend and it needs to be more consistently and harshly addressed by officials and coaches.

These kids know it's wrong. My opinion aside, what are refs supposed to do and is there guidance given on this topic?

Refs have to see it to call it otherwise there would be all kinds of "flopping" going on. This is the same in regards to "choking" type moves as well.... And more recently moves that cut the blood off. I've seen it at a high level (Nick Simmons-Michigan State) warned. & DQ'ed from a college match so it's not impossible for it to be addressed by refs.

It all depends if it is a punch or not. It can either be unsportsmanlike conduct penalty or if bad enough it would be flagrant misconduct. High school is watched much more closely then college

I've watched 1000s of matches at all levels. I've never seen a wrestler get away with actually throwing a punch (other than one clip on YouTube) without being DQ'd. I've seen kids penalized for throwing rough cross-faces 100s of times, many of which I thought were reasonable.

Nope it was an out right pop to the face--3 times--closed fist while standing up-I watched for it after the first time. The crap part about it was the kid he popped in the face--it was his first year, first match and he wasn't expecting it. He's freaked out and his parents are freaked out even more it wasn't handled more assertively. The excuse "hard cross face" as if it is a get out jail card, badge of honor especially at the youth level isn't acceptable. There's a cross face and then there's I am going to smack you like I own you and make it look like a cross face because I know it won't be addressed--these kids that have been around know the difference. I personally feel we'll see more of this with MMA growing in popularity. Unless refs pre-meet on how to handle this uniformly before a tournament and guidance on how to handle this that's adhered to isn't established with refs---these "hard cross faces" could get out of hand if not addressed. JMHO.

Was this at a youth tournament? If so it is more believable unfortunately these tournaments are reffed with high school kids that dont know the rules often time lose focus and don't see things like this

Unless this was a youth tournament, you should post the video online somewhere so it can be addressed. If it's at the high school level, I find it pretty hard to believe. In 35 years of watching high school wrestling, I've never seen a wrestler through a punch. Doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but three times in one match?

If this was at a youth tournament, then the previous poster had it right. Lot's of high school kids officiating. Pretty early in the year at that - probably just thinking about eating and hoping that they don't embarrass themselves too bad. At the point of the first punch, I would have asked the parent or coach to interrupt the match so that everyone would be aware of the situation going forward.

To be fair--it was a youth tournament as part of a 6-8th grade school program-there must have been 10 teams or more there put on by people I have a lot of respect for and know well. I did talk to the organizers--who were aware of the one situation along with two others in the same tournament. There were adult refs. The organizers said moving forward they are going to have the refs meet ahead of time and get agreement from all of them ahead of time how to proactively handle situations moving forward the same way--they volunteered it had been happening more and voluntarily attributed it to the MMA influence. They also said a mom had run out on the mat after the whistle blew to hug her son and nearly got knocked down--that one made me laugh a little.

Appreciate the responses.

My 4th grader was punched last weekend. Luckily he was hit in the headgear. The high schooler that was refing stop the match, told him no punching and continued the match. No loss of points. Doesn't surprise me tho the kid acted this way, I overheard his coach yelling at the kids if "I see anyone smiling I'm kicking you off the team."
