son was wrestling he did a ankle bust to flatten out bottom man he held it while looking for a wrist or next move, he was stopped and told he had to let go of ankle / leg after he had bottom man down . The knee was bent in a normal front to back angle like a knee is sopose to bend not in a bad angle . My point is how is this worse or different than getting a arm and holding it in a bar or hammer lock behind the back ? Thanks

Holding or trapping an ankle is a stall ride. What I've noticed is that refs will tell the top wrestler to give up the ankle. If they don't don't give it up, they call him for stalling.

Your question is actually reasonable because from the stands locking a leg up or an arm back look very similiar.

However, there are a number of differences between holding an arm and holding an ankle. Both situations (holding an arm locked behind an opponent's back or holding an ankle up on an opponent's butt) can lead to the top man being called for stalling.

The main difference, is that the arm almost always leads directly to a pinning or turning combination. Locking the leg up almost never leads to a pinning combination. In fact, there is very little the top guy can do from that position (other than a bow-and-arrow in Freestyle).

Secondly, if an arm is locked, the offensive wrestler can still get out perpendicular and avoid the "parallel wrestling" thats leads to stalling calls. Locking up an ankle is almost impossible to do unless the offensive wrestle is directly parallel with the bottom wrestler.

The bottom line is that a top man can break down the bottom guy with the ankle but has to move on to something else almost immediately.

Very good job everyone you guys nailed it. rule 6.4 it is stalling top wrestler holds the heel to buttocks while defensive wrestler is broken down on the mat for more then 5 secs. Often times coaches yell how long can he hold that ankle . The rule used to be (10-15) years ago say 5 secs on ankle no matter where the def wrestler was however coaches don't realize how long ago that changed.

Now don't get me wrong you can be called for stalling if you constantly go to the ankle. However coaches the first couple times as long as he is working to break him down there is no time limit

I'm not sure what you mean by "gets trapped" but if the foot is against the butt for any reason, you get 5 seconds to release it. There isn't really any offensive move or setup from that position - every offensive move requires that you free the leg and get out perpendicular.
