The question I always wonder about is why would you not release someone who doesn't want to be there? I don't see the upside.
Colleges wrestling programs target specific athletes to fill specific gaps in their line-up. Once they get an NLI, they set that money aside and usually pass on the other choices for that opening. Those guys end up signing elsewhere and are gone from the recruiting pool.

How many 285 pounders do you think the Gophers are actively recruiting out of next year's high school graduating class?
Obviously it creates problems in planning a lineup and recruiting, but forcing someone to stay or not compete can create even more problems with a disgruntled team member. Plus granting a release can be seen as good PR for future recruits and athletes wanting to transfer in to your program. Certainly not an ideal situation for either party.

No 5 (Intermat) Garrett Joles is in semis of Folkstyle Nationals. Will face No. 3 AJ Ferrari who is a stud. Interested to see how he does.
Ferrari had a win over Kennedy at Fargo last year, so this will be a big test.
Ferrari over Joles 3-1.

Jake Svihel and Sebas Swiggum advanced to the finals.

So if Gable wanted to leave you would be fine with him just walking out the door, wasting your $ and scholarship $ for that upcoming year. It would be a great PR move? I think your glasses might be fogged a hair.

I would say if someone wants to leave, the mistake was already made in the recruiting, in that it was not a good fit for your program. Holding the athlete captive is punitive, and doesn't help either party.

In your example, no scholie money was wasted because he is still in high school and not on campus. It does create lineup problem, since you stop recruiting that weight, as Iowan pointed out. Also in your example, with Gable, there wasn't a coaching change since he committed, so that's a different situation.

Do you think ISU should have forced Allar to stay or lose a year after he signed a NLI, but then changed coaching staffs?

In a world of Twitter Facebook and internet forums, forcing a kid to stay at a school they don't want to be at is a bad idea.

Cassiopeia looks like the real deal. Sam could be pushed in the room next year.

Just go to the trackwrestling home page and scroll down until you see them. They have an individual post for each weight. I would post a link but it is too long. I saw them when the NCAA tournament was going on and was surprised that they did rankings.

Looks like a few people like Robb. Sokol is probably missing from their rankings because he was hurt most of the year. Flo has Sokol as the 5th ranked Freshman in the country. Intermat has him as the #3 freshman.

Sokol tore up Fargo last year, hence the high ranking. Hopefully he heals fully from his injury.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sokol and Ballantyne both top 10 recruits.

Agreed it will be interesting to see what weights they are at at Fargo. A big Fargo will boost Ballentynes stock. He could be at the same weight as Sokol though (126).

Anyone here if the Gophers are trying to add to their recruiting class? Any updates on Carlson? Would be nice to add him to see if he can beat out Gliva for 133 in 19/20...

#1 Junior Kurt McHenry commits to Michigan.

They are starting to acquire a logjam at the lighter weights as well.

ok... so question? what are the chances we get McNasty to fill in 125 and P Mckee goes 133?
His top 5 are UNC, Michigan, Cornell, PSU (of course?!?) and Stanford

So chances aren’t good
As Grap noted, Mchenry just committed to Michigan. Crazy to see someone list PSU in top 5 and not go there. Gotta think he would be an upgrade over Teske even with partial overlap.

I penciled McNasty going to Cornell. Should be fun watching PMckee and him battle

Is McHenry really the #1 overall recruit? He lost this season and still wrestles 113 as a Junior.

When the list is redone he probably won’t be #1, but he is at this time.

If Robb didn't want to be Gopher the first time around I don't see why people assume he wants to be now. If he decides against SDSU, I'd bet good money on him ending up in Lincoln.
If Robb didn’t want to be a Husker the first time around.....

He wanted to be a Jackrabbit coached by Bono and Reader. Circumstances obviously changed.
Wouldn't that make Wisconsin the obvious choice now?

Maybe

The Wick Brothers currently occupy his desired weights

Lots of dynamics
