I'd love to have them. Iron sharpens iron. Let the weights work themselves out......Could we afford them that is a better question.

I know it has been mentioned but if hypothetically that could happen you are looking at a class with the 1,9,16,36,42 and 47 top 100 recruits (As of December 2017). That is not counting Mcintosh, Joles, Gliva and Steffen some of whom I would think would be in there now. Without Loyd and Robb this is the biggest class in 10 years...please please please!

I am looking at it as a better lineup if Lizak can go 125.

Lizak, GWH > Petry, Lizak

I know this will be the minority opinion but I'll pass on Perry. Rather save the money for elsewhere.

Not that impressed with Perry.

One benefit IMO of bringing in transfers, especially due to our departures, is it helps balance scholarship allocations over a 5 year schedule. Theoretically this should help create better roster balance and making it easier to restock after a class graduates.

I don’t envision Perry being a large price tag either, despite being an AA. Obviously he had a lackluster regular season, but he did beat several talented guys at the big show. Including a few guys Thorn lost to.

I would agree.

He had a great run at the NCAA’s, and I don’t want to take anything away from that, but going into that tournament he was 15-16 on the year and 38-36 for a career. And if you look at who he wrestled during the year, it’s a pretty generic list other then a few guys.

Returning AA. Some EMU-like school would open the pocketbook.

There's a decent chance he doesn't crack the starting lineup ever for the gophers.

Ya agreed with some EMU like school throwing a big offer at him. I was talking about MN not throwing a lot at him. We have a lot to offer outside of just scholarship dollars.

He would have his work cut out for him to make the lineup. All the better reason to have him here. Nothing is guaranteed and may the best guy win.

AA Justin Oliver CMU also granted a release. As I said I think transfers from smaller programs are only going to increase.

I would take Oliver and Perry. Perry if he can keep 133 and if Lizak to stay down. Oliver would only be needed if Thorn stays down and Oliver can make 149. Bleise can hold down 157 till Lee is done with his RS....next year, outside Lizak, HOPEFULLY a healthy Thorn and Bleise..and Gable, unsure how many points or AA possibilities we would have. TT and Bleise need to stay healthy. Anything we can do to add to spots like 133, 184, etc. Would be helpful.

What happens when the smaller schools just drop wrestling?

While I understand wanting to get better practice partners, coaching, etc. That don't leave much incentive for smaller schools to support wrestling when wrestlers start leaving regularly.

133-Lizak
141-Perry
149-Thorn

Then we can redshirt Mitch and not have much of a drop off at all. Not sure why people wouldn’t want him... at the very least he’s going to be a very good back up. With how much our lighters weights sit out of duals he would get plenty of mat time either way. We would also obviously be getting him for pretty cheap. Do this for a year and let them figure it out after. Maybe have Perry go back down to 133 after Liza’s graduates if he can make it. That would make our team significantly stronger in two years.

Seems reasonable after wrapping up the greatest high school career of all time. I did a similar thing after I finished my annual tour of gazing at the ceilings of various gyms in west central MN in the 80s.

With all the money families are investing into these athletes at a young age, it is no surprise that they are using small schools as a stepping stone to the bigger stage. As time goes on we will see less loyalty to schools and more athletes doing whatever it takes to "achieve their goals".

I don't know. I think if I were a lower tier recruit who ended up at a smaller school and I made a huge jump in college compared to what was expected I may be hesitant to make a change. It could very well just be that the wrestler developed late, but it could have something to do with the coaches, teammates, school setting, etc. I know most athletes don't see it this way, and I can't blame them for wanting to wrestle on a bigger stage, but I've always liked living by the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" mantra.

Asa Garcia, has been mentioned in here before. 120 pound Indiana State champ, junior. He’s in the quarterfinals of the FloNationals tournament today, and I think he’d be a good gopher target! Somewhat under the radar.

Just watched him handle a higher ranked Sammy Alvarez 7-3. Looked solid, kept attacking even though he was in the lead the entire match.

Pretty cool the Dream Team classic is at his high school this year. Him and Teemer will be an exciting match and bet it gets the crowd fired up.
