Cashman just committed to Iowa
Ahhhh sounded like there was at least a decent chance the bunnies were going to land him. Iowa is kind of a head scratcher to me on that one. I'm a big proponent of good recruits not letting other recruits around their weight class dictate where they go, but when the guys in front of them aren't recruits anymore (Lee, DeSanto) and they're both proven AA caliber guys who have 3 years of eligibility left it is a little confusing.

Agree I don’t see the fit. Can always transfer out if he finds himself buried in the depth chart and is unhappy.

I’d imagine that Desanto bumps to 141 after a year? Lee-Cashman-Desanto

Yeah, I don't get it either. He's a small 125, it's pretty unlikely that he ever grows into a full sized 133, and there's a true freshman national champ ahead of him on the depth chart. He found the youngest, most talented 125 in the country and situated himself directly behind him. I'm a huge fan of Aaron Cashman and I hope that he does well, but he put himself in a pretty rough spot here. Unless DeSanto gets kicked off the team or Lee gets seriously injured, I don't see a way for him to get more than two years starting. It's also worth considering that they're not going to stop attracting top little guys like him. It may be that he gets to his junior year and Cullan Schriever or someone decides that he wants to be a Hawkeye and Cashman finds himself a backup to him.

EDIT: I just saw that Cashman's second choice with Ohio State who just signed Malik Heinselman, this kid is not afraid of competition at all.

Heinsleman is going to be really really good. I was hoping the Gophers had a chance but he committed early to Ohio State.

I would too, and there's still two years of Lugo to keep Murin down at 141. They could the redshirt game with him if they wanted.

2018: 125: Lee (Cashman redshirts) 133: DeSanto
2019: 125: Cashman (Lee Redshirts) 133: DeSanto
2020: 125: Lee 133: Cashman (DeSanto redshirts)
2021: 125: Lee 133: Cashman 141: DeSanto 149: Murin

I don't think they'll do it, but they could.

On the other hand, he didn't want to compete in the same room in his hometown team's wrestling room against a HS rival who he'd be up against for a spot as both are coming off redshirts. Instead, he goes to IA who if Lee doesn't want to RS, won't have to....and could be a 4xchamp....

Dumb move...but I'll eat crow if he develops into a top notch 125 or 133lber..

There are a few reasons not to want to go to Minnesota, it may not be just avoiding McKee.

I don't know much about Cashman, but the fact that he went to the Olympic training center indicates international aspirations.

It is painful to say but Brands does an outstanding job with light weights and has a great environment and track record for lightweights with freestyle aspirations.

Iowa isn't like Penn State, they're not going to mail it in for a season. Lee scored 26 points as a true freshman. He's good for possibly more the next few years.

Considering Fix's latest success at WTT, it wouldnt be crazy for Lee to want an Olympic redshirt for 2020.

I really have to give credit to this coaching staff for going after transfers.

When people would talk about Kerkvliet transferring after Gable's four years of eligibility I would roll my eyes, but now I wouldn't rule it out. Even though it is still extremely unlikely.

The staff is going after solid guys at our weakest weights. Bleise last year at 149. And Russell and Skatzka at 125 and 174. Would love to continue to see this in the future.

Lee not wrestling in any opens this spring cause brands says it's not in the plan makes me think Lee will take an OR and Cashman will get his hand at 25, or somebody else will be there. Brands is about the team, and what's best for the wrestlers..wrestlers he has are about what's best for the team.

I feel like JRent and DeSanto are both looking to go 141 at one point. JRent didn't make weight at NCAA's so that tells me 133 is not in his future at all. And when DeSanto got his release there were rumblings that he was looking to go 141 for someone, but Iowa fell in his lap and it's hard not to pass that up. But still don't see him staying at 133 for multiple years.

It's a little dissapointing as most top Juniors have verballed and the Gophers have none. However, the following class seems much better overall and we would have the #1 junior wrestler if not for bad luck with weights.
