Quoting limited to 4 levels deep
Wrestling at the U is a non-revenue sport which means that they have an operating budget set and managed by the U. If gate receipts are less than costs, then the U takes care of the difference. Likewise, if they bring in more revenue than their costs, the U takes the profit. JRob always thought that it would be nice to have a system where the program got to share in any extra revenue -- that way there would be an incentive to hold and publicize the big duals in larger venues. As it is, there is really no financial incentive to do promotional events like when the Gophers wrestled Iowa at the Target Center in 2002. I remember JRob saying something to the effect that the profits from the event were going to Women's' volleyball.
so what you are saying is nobody should be mad when MN kids choose to go outside the state because the U of MN does not value wrestling like other sports.
Penn State wrestling isn't a revenue sport either.
Yeah but the Nittany wrestling club has $5,000,000 in the Bank and I’d be willing to bet they push some “grants” thru to the athletes.

Keegan O'Toole (class of '20 likely 133/141) from Arrowhead HS WI committed to Missouri. Not surprising since he has been part of the Askren academy.

Off topic, does wrestling even generate enough money to fund the program yearly? Salaries, tuition, traveling, etc?

Also, we can love a coach and he can be the greatest guy in the world, but there job is to ultimately win.
JRob was quoted as saying that wrestling will never be a revenue sport so we can be sure that the gophers aren't breaking even. I know that Bono said that wrestling was a revenue sport at SDSU last year, but that's the first that I've ever heard of any wrestling team breaking even.

Not at all. Most D1 sports other than football and basketball at most schools are non-revenue. In fact, you could say that the U "sponsoring" the program shows its commitment to the sport. If they left wrestling to fend for itself and try to cover airfare, scholarships, and other program costs with gate receipts, they'd have a tough time in down years. The average D1 wrestling program costs a University about $600K per year.

Football and basketball have TV and Bowl/playoff revenue sources that get shared across conferences which other sports just haven't figured out how to copy.

I truly don’t understand why anyone of sound mind would be upset with a child that chooses a college that fits their needs.
The U of M has great coaches and excellent facility’s but I know a ton of kids that are not looking for a big city campus life.
I personally think it’s fortunate that there is out of state programs that want to recruit local kids.

Going to be up in Fargo for the next two weeks, hoping to catch some wrestling while I’m there. Huge time for recruits!

I would guess they make some $ for wrestling, but it's just a lump sum that they share with each school athletic department for all sporting events. It's up to the school how they spend the money. https://www.westernjournal.com/wc/some-big-ten-schools-to-get-50-million-payouts-from-latest-deals/

Reportedly SDSU and WI are after Nicholas Staska of Owatonna.

Also Iowa forums feel pretty confident in landing Sokol.

Sokol is part of a younger group of MN high school guys that we need to try and keep in state. Along with Joey Thompson, Craig Orlando, Reid Ballantyne, Quayin Short and Paxton Creese. The classes of 2020 and 2021 are talented in-star.

I'd like to know why they feel so confident in this? He trains with pinnacle and wrestles for Simley. All Gopher connections. The coaching staff/recruiters should be embarrassed if they keep losing the states top wrestlers.

Ballantyne is a mystery with recent results. Short is getting better. I respectfully disagree on the others being D1 Big-Ten talented.

Creese is the one I almost left out because his folkstyle isn’t nearly as good as his Greco, where he’s a big name. But I think by the time they're seniors, both Thompson and Orlando will be top 10 in their weight class as recruits.

Sokol I heard is a huge Hawkeye fan and was in Iowa City with Kennedy. Over the holiday I was listening to Jason Bryant podcasts to kill time and Creese was on with Kerk and stated he desired leaving Minnesota after high school. So that's two that will probably not don maroon/gold. That's okay they all need to follow their own path.

Side note I do not listen to podcasts much but Bryant is pretty good.

Sokol going to Iowa along with Kennedy & Glazier would be extremely depressing.

It’s not Jared or Brandon’s job to recruit for the Gophers. They are club coaches. In our sons recruiting, they were great sounding boards. Very very knowledgeable about a lot of things. We asked them lots of questions about programs and coaches. We felt they were very honest and direct about everything. I also feel confident in saying, I’m sure they would both like the top talent to stay in state. That being said, There just isn’t enough spots for everyone to stay in state.
