gopherfan149--your not making much sense. Yes Downey is probably not a great student, maybe he is trouble off the mat..but he's a pretty good wrestler, that is all my point is.

Hoffman might be a decent D1 guy...
Him, with his baggage and circus that follows him will not make some random juco national champ a d1 prospect. He adds no value whatsoever to the guy your talking about. None.

Otherwise whoever practiced with mario mason years ago would have been a stud.
I don't really see how someone's character effects how good of a practice partner they are. If it did Iowa wouldn't be competing for a national championship year after year.
I guess we see different things then.

So by your logic, Downey is not a good wrestler?

practicing with Downey does not help you become a D1 wrestler. He has talent but hasn't backed it up with everything else that makes a good D1 wrestler, especially through osmosis or whatever you thought would make the juco guy a D1 guy. Talent in D1 is a dime a dozen. Everything else is what makes them succeed or fail.

Disagree if talent was a dime a dozen at D1 we wouldn't have all the gaping holes we have this year.

A couple of things

1. Any JUCO national champ is a DI prospect
2. I think what gopherfan149 is getting at is that Downey may be a great wrestler with a ton of talent, but maybe his practice habits aren't great?
3. The Gophers need whoever they can get!

I was just thinking Hoffman at 184, dominating JUCO Nat. Champ...might be a 2xchamp...would be a good fit. Even if you redshirt him next year (if Steveson can make it down while Pfarr is a Sr.), it would allow him to assimilate to D1, lets Steveson wrestle varsity...in 17/18 when Steveson is a So. at 197, Hoffman would be a Jr. at 184 (I am thinking Jeske might go 174 in college and Webster would be a 184)...

Wanzek will be a Sr. when Jeske is Red. Fr...best man wins....

I have no idea how much $$ they have, but he might be worth throwing some money at him...

It also adds somebody into the room at a weight of need. As long as the Gopher coaches think he can compete at the D1 level.

I don't know if it's the early morning or what, but I might have to agree with gfan, here. Many talented kids take the D1 route and find trouble.

I went to a D3 school, so I know it isn't the same thing. However, in talking with people in collegiate wrestling, I've found that it is often a true love of learning and the sport that go a LONG way. In order to be seriously successful, you have to have so much focus and dedication. It's hard to give it the necessary time and energy, while juggling classes and attempting to be a social human. I've watched quite a few HS studs not achieve their goals at the collegiate level, while kids who maybe qualified for their state tournament or place low turn around and have great success.

Talent is obviously necessary, but in my opinion, collegiate success is dictated by focus and work ethic.

Also, I laughed at the osmosis comment.

Alex Lloyd needs to be a Gopher! What a beast! He would be a great replacement for Thorn as he could step right in after a redshirt season. That is, if he stays at his current weight.

Alex Thomsen, So, IA is another prospect to keep an eye on. He doesn't seem like the hawkeye type.

Setting up a Fort Dodge pipeline might not be a bad idea. Teske, and the Laras. Cook is probably going to Oklahoma for ball.
I'll take the 220lber Wriedt I think that beat 2 time champ Anderson, Kid wrestles with serious heart. Very raw so huge upside.

J Rob was at 2AAA finals yesterday. He was really throwing down the popcorn while watching Lloyd in the finals match.

Hey LMD, is this regarding a 2017 recruit or for 2018?

Hope it's in regards to G. Steveson and Roman Bravo-Young...maybe an elite East Coast kid too.

unfortunately he might be a "tweener". Right between Thorn, McKee, and Stroker.

Might be a good fit at 149 if Stroker ends up at 157.

Anyone know much about Patrick Keneedy from KSM? I think it said he was an 8th grader wrestling 145 AA and took 3rd place. Only loss was to the undefeated Epps. Pretty damn impressive competing and winning in a higher weight class so young.

Jay and company, get to work.

Kasson doesn't appear to be slowing down on their development of talent anytime soon. Building that relationship with the program will be very important moving forward.

Has Lange from Frazee or Berge(195) from Kasson committed anywhere? Wouldn't mind them competing in the room.

Was in Northern Wisconsin last weekend and to my surprise they broadcast the finals of the WIAA state wrestling tourney live on TV Saturday night, BTN's Shane Sparks was doing pbp on D1 finals.

Anyways, one takeaway was that U of WI wrestling was never mentioned, even though it was their home state and just minutes from campus. There were state champs going to Nebraska, Missouri, play D1 football and of course Marko to MN.

Side note, Marko looked decent, started strong and then backed it off for his 4th State title.
