Intermat had him committed to Cumberland--a NAIA school. I hope this is not a sign of Berge telling them "no".....

The 2 have zero to do with each other.
If an NAIA hwt commit decides he'd rather be a Gopher please don't think it means we lost Gable. :D

With only 4 kids graduating I imagine this year's recruiting class is about done. Vega being the last real big talent on the market that is in play.

Mr Champaigne did committ though. Welcome and welcome to the MN wrestling Family.

Why would this be a sign?
If Berge was resistant to signing in 6 months or so, maybe he told them and J and the crew was like "screw it", lets add another good recruit around 165/174 that will get into the school and can compete for one of those spots.

I wonder if Jeske and Webster have qualified, that could be another reason they got this guy to commit. Maybe those guys have to spend a year in Rochester or whatever...I HOPE not!!

I think it has more to do with Jose wanting to wrestle in the B1G with the Gophers and having a pretty good familiarity with the Steveson's and Early than anything else. Spending some offseason time training at OPRF over the last few years probably didn't hurt either.

Jose is about as good of a recruit that you can pick up this late in the recruiting process, as most seniors in the top 100 have already committed. He is here on his own merits, not because someone else declined.

Champaigne will never see a D1 starting lineup. I really doubt Berge would consider this a threat.

Said the same thing about Gresh Jones last year

Good point. Unfortunately, we seem to get a lot of these guys that "shouldn't see a D1 starting lineup"... the last guy I can think of that we signed this late in the season that was really good was Rivera after he won a Senior NHSCA title....

Unless someone else has a good example? Did Steiny sign in the fall or spring after the season?

I can't think of any other prominent major contributors to a team in the last 10-15 years..but I am sure I am missing many.

I hope we get Berge and Vega....Maybe a guy like Jose C. is a "recruited walk on"...cause if people are saying he shouldn't see a D1 lineup--we can't invest much in a guy like that is probably a 3rd, 4th stringer.

Why don't you guys let them get on campus, or at least finish high school, before you decide where they fit on the Gopher depth chart. It's not like the U of M has a roster cap. If non-blue chip guys want to be part of the program, why does that bother some of you? I've never heard of Jose before yesterday, but a 2 time IL state champ isn't chopped liver, and could turn out to be an important part of the team.

People probably thought Tim Hartung would never see a D1 lineup either. People did think that of Scott Schiller among many others. Mario Mason and Tyler Lehmann are the next Gopher stars. The truth of the matter is that nobody knows. Prematurely Writing a kid off or anointing a recruit can backfire and make ya look silly.

Plenty of non star wrestlers go on to be successful in the business world. Those tend to help fund and support future Gopher dreams. Senior Josh Mora wrestled one year for the Gophers and I hear gave one of the best speeches of any banquet and was a positive impact on others. Petry's work ethic as a relatively unheralded recruit. These wrestlers can go on to be assets outsides of just the wins and losses.

You are 100% correct. The wrestlers have not been criticized in any manner outside of their wrestling. Their future success will largely depend on their social and academic skills. Their ability to form and maintain close friendships with their teammates will only help them (think networking).

But then, this is a wrestling board and not a life skills board.

I believe Schiller was a top 4 recruit in his high school weight class (215 lbs.). Mario and Lehman did disappoint.

Flo's Junior top 100 has Berge at #10 and Allar #44 and has both projecting at 165.

Warner of IL is #11.

Would guess they are looking at Singletary the #5 overall for 197.

HWY Metz out of Fargo West was around #50.

Jarod Vekelon(sp?) is around #17 and shared time on the cadet world team with Gable. Maybe a connection.

Not a ton of guys that jump out with MN connections.

MN has a reputation for Big Guys and they have been going after the best 195's available so I would assume the same happens with Songleterry. He will have plenty of options.

Fix will be hard to pull from OK ST. tOSU, NE and would guess PSU all in play.
Gfellar sounds like OKST or NE
O'Connor is the only other not committed and no idea about him.

Spencer Lee has a ways to go to be a solid 125 in college. He's signed up under the massive 110lber this weekend. How much room does he have to grow? I'm probably the only person not sold on him be the next best thing in college.

I heard that José was concerned about going to a large college and that is why he originally committed to a smaller one but after visiting the U decided it was fine. His little brother took 2nd as a sophomore I think, I like brother connections. Other good wrestlers on that team as well, they might be at a tournament here in Minnesota next year.

Flo ranks MN's class #10in the country.

Needs for Next Year: I don’t see any pressing needs. With the monster #3 class last year, Minny is pretty darn young and complete. They have a very good starter or eventual starter that’s a FR or SO at every single weight class. The only hole seems to be 165, and that’s IF Larry Early doesn’t move up, which I expect him to do.

Flashback Stat: Minnesota’s 2016-17 starting line-up will include just two seniors (Brett Pfarr/Mike Kroells). It will also include at least two starters from four different classes. They had to take some lumps (by Gopher standards) last year, but that’s pretty darn good roster management.
