It seems the Gophers have no chance with the top level recruits in Minnesota or elsewhere. Are any of the top 50 types considering becoming Gophers? Is Eggum still listed as an interim coach? If so, only second tier wrestlers will going to Minnesota. I hope Coyle understands this. If not, we'll become like Indiana. |

I don't know what moron thinks your son has anything to prove. He's going to be good in college. Whoever says that you should have them watch his match against McKee last yr. I will cheer for him unless it's against a gopher. |

It's been this way for awhile and not just this year. Their product on the mat isn't producing results. Their middle weights have decent prospects the last few years and, other than Dylan, they've bombed. It's just made worse by this scandal. Chris Bono is doing a great job at SDSU, but when they come in and start stealing our top guys ...it's rock bottom. SDSU and Minnesota are two programs headed in opposite directions in a big hurry. It's getting to the point where I don't want to follow college wrestling any longer. Gable is our last hope, and realistically why would he want to come here? Our hope is he signs and other top kids follow. But right now things are looking bleak. |

A new coach is going to change everything. As long as there is a new face leading the program next year, this will be our last year of decline. And hey, if we snag Bono, we can probably get those recruits back. |

You are right, we have no idea whether of not Steveson will be good in college. We should focus on finding the next diamond in the rough vs the mega recruits that rarely pan out. Edited by true future, Nov 19 2016, 12:18 AM.

That's not the point. Gable will be good in college. He's special. But the success of the program doesn't hinge on Minnesota signing him or not. Give Brandon Eggum and staff some time to get their wheels turning before assuming the worst. |

We sign MN recruits... "we need to sign out of state recruits" We don't sign MN recruits... "we need to sign MN recruits" I would have liked to sign Lloyd. Molitor and Robb are great high school wrestlers as well but not complete program changers for where MN wants to be. Wish them all the best and hope they make me eat my words and develop into multi time AA's and national champions. These guys committing to SDSU means a lot more to SDSU than it means against MN not signing them. Obviously MN can always use more talent so it stings fans that are hoping for good news. A lot working against MN currently. I have faith and will see u guys when it turns around. |

Lloyd is tough as nails...I wish he'd change his mind before next November. He's the kinda guy that could be a 4 year starter for the Gophers. The recruiting is suffering with the "interim" tag attached to Eggum. On the other hand, last years recruiting class wasn't exactly a stellar one either. McKee is obviously a starter but unless Marko develops and fills into a 149lber (and maybe down the road becomes so good and that Stroker grows into a 157lber), it isn't a sure thing we'll even get two starters from that class. The class before that--the Redshirt Fr. have probably 4-5 starters depending on how a darkhorse like Brolsma develops but we need Bobby, Freddy and LEIII as well as Streifel to truly develop better and faster than Short and Wanzek did as they have under performed overall. I hope all the guys improve dramatically as it is the only way we'll be successful as a team. Guys like Short and Wanzek are getting to the point where they should be studs--Short hasn't shown he can be aggressive enough and I don't see it changing unless the coaches punish him by benching him until he's ready to be aggressive at all times, not just the last 30 seconds when he is down by 1-2 points. If the Gophers finish outside the top 20, or maybe top 15, Eggum needs to go and that probably means some of the assistant coaches go too. Gophers aren't getting the top wrestlers in MN and their recruiting nationwide has plummeted and overall the last several years (since Morgan left) has completely demolished most chances of an NCAA team title. Our best chance in 2015 took a nose dive because some of those guys (N. Dardanes in particular but Wanzek did not exactly tear it up either) did not perform on the big stage. Even Storley never fully climbed the AA ladder like Brown from PSU did (even though Brown was boring, Storley was most likely more talented but loss his aggression against the top level). Also sucked that Ness got hurt at NCAA's and Short got hurt at Big Ten's after a frustrating RFr. year. That year we had to rely on a true freshman to save our lowest weight class. Lots of posters want to stick their head in the sand about the slow or lack of development under Eggum over the years and the recruiting has not been good overall--which is why IA , PSU and OSU will dominate us for awhile. I'm going to the dual tomorrow, but I'm concerned that we might be seeing SDSU beat us---even with 2-3 starters out. Top tier programs do not lose those kind of duals, their depth is better and 2-3 guys don't make the dumb decision to sell Xanax. Book smarts and street stupid is not a good combination....those suspended guys might have cost us at least one dual if not more this year. Hopefully we are still able to beat MI and MI St. OSU will crush us this year....probably by 25 pts. unless they rest some of their guys (Best guess is probably 33-8---only the big guys winning and maybe getting bonus--could be 33-6). Trying to sort this out.... so the reason we lost the title in 2015 is because Marty left in 2008? Eggum and co couldn't develop talent or recruit so they coasted on Morgans success for 7 years before wetting the bed? Asking for a friend. We want and expect better, as do the wrestlers and coaches. IMO we are in a three year rebuild with all the circumstances dealt. How you choose to handle it is up to you. |

They need to create an atmosphere where wrestlers believe they will get better and can be part of something. Maybe some of the kids from MN that SDSU signed aren't "program changers" at the highest levels but the question to ask yourself is, "why aren't they committing to Minnesota for little or no money?" There are kids that are program changers doing just that to wrestle at Penn State and that's because Penn State is offering them an opportunity to be a part of something special. There has been a lot of talk about what Bono, Reader and Schopp are doing -- they have created something special. If you hear Bono's interviews on it, it's an ALL IN deal with EVERYONE there all summer for every lift and every workout. No exceptions and no excuses. In my opinion that's why they're better this year and it's why they are signing recruits. |

^^^this I don't seem to recall anyone complaining about recruiting or development when Minnesota went 2nd, 3rd and 2nd recently. DWB, that was a nice twenty paragraph rant full of your typical pretend knowledge. It was very powerful to read. Life changing. |

You're right, I certainly didn't complain because I just assumed like most people that Minnesota would still get their share of the kids they wanted and especially those who wrestled their prep careers in Minnesota. Losing Hall to Penn State wasn't the end of the world but it kind of turned into a sign of things to come. Now we're there. I can see your point about waiting to give Eggum a chance. I can also see where some want change now. I don't pretend to know how much control the current staff was given under J. If they were already making the calls re: recruiting and program-related matters then they'd be on a very short leash. If they weren't and can show a road map to returning the program to prominence then I'd give them a chance and let them try. |

And how long should we be patient ? 3-5 years ? Maybe they need some fresh perspective on the way recruiting has changed since the mid 90's - early 2000's . There are more options for the top MN kids and the U does not seem to be appealing to top or even mid level national kids. |

For starters either the interim tag needs to go or Eggum needs to go -- one or the other. You aren't going to compete for nationally ranked kids with an interim head coach and no certainty regarding the future of things. |

Two ways recruiting has changed is Facilities and RTC's are more important than ever. Eggum has got support of donors to improve both. $2million+ in donor support. These things will ideally be here within the 3 year window and will make MN much more appealing. |
