I would agree that some of the recruiting problems do go as far back as Morgan leaving the program. Marty was looking for some clarity in the head coaching status and perhaps a timetable. When there was no answer to the question, he chose to go in another direction with his life/career. I understand that JRob did an outstanding job but, you need to know when to let go. Any potential recruit wants to see some continuity in the coaching staff. When you have a coach in their 60's, there is a good chance there will be a change of head coach in a 5 year span. A very similar situation took place at NDSU when the head coach would not let go until he was near or at 70 years of age. SDSU is doing an outstanding job of recruiting even though NDSU has far better facilities. NDSU has weathered the storm of a coaching staff that held on too long but, they have some catching up to do with SDSU. The Gophers will be playing catch up for several more years and I hope the staff that is in place can do the job. Loosing out in the recruiting of in-state talent does not look good to perspective talent. |

I don't think it is fair to judge a new coach while he is still under the penalties and repercussions of his predecessor. |

Hey everyone, no more arguing with grappler6 and "MachoManRandyTravis", they know all, they believe Eggum and company are infallible. God forbid you criticize any Gopher for lack of development or effort in matches. They are always right about recruiting, coaching and talent levels. We should ALL put our head up our a##es and be satisfied with 10th-20th place at NCAA and PSU/IA/OSU owning NCAA wrestling. They truly want us to follow them as they believe they geniuses, that way us mortals can enjoy homeristic commentary regarding our favorite wrestling team while dealing with a "rebuild" and an objectively lower level of wrestling then we've seen in 20 years or so. Enjoy... |

Yes, let's cry and whine. That helps everything. Criticism in college athletics for all teams is expected, especially historically successful ones. The idea that Minnesota wrestling has been on a downward spiral for years and years (despite 2nd, 3rd, 2nd) is puzzling. Last season left much to be desired for most fans and the drug scandal has had a drastic impact on many facets of the program. I choose to believe that Brandon Eggum and his staff, along with their high level of experience and knowledge, have the ability to turn things around. It will take time, and the fans should be willing to be patient. They have earned that much for commitment thus far. This does not mean I believe that the program is beyond receiving criticism. |

Makes sense. So, you're saying Dusty has short-man's disease with thin skin & a hard heart? A man who survived a stroke would know. Also, I liked it when you sang "Amazing Grace" at your Country Hall of Fame induction. |

I don't think it's close to a "years and years" thing. It's actually a fairly recent phenomenon (not getting very many high level recruits) and it started before the "drug scandal." Edited by Figure Four, Nov 19 2016, 04:53 PM.

Actually quite a few people on here pointed out that we were not getting good recruits to replace the talent in the room. I remember many people making fun of those people and were pointing out how we were 2nd and 3rd. Also, the excuse of we have a lot of money wrapped up in these guys so we cannot recruit anyone. This has been coming long before Xanex. If you want to blame it all on that go ahead. You obviously were oblivious to what was coming. I am not shocked at all. You cannot get out recruited for five straight years and hope to compete. Love that you are putting it all on the Xanex thing that happened last year though. |

Gable was right there with Bobby last night. I keep going back and forth with thinking he really will be a gopher. The nice thing is the gophers have had plenty of success with the big boys, but I can't shake the feeling Penn St or Ohio will get him. |

The fact that Bobby is improving is what is encouraging me the most. He looked really good against SDSU. A big guy changing levels and cutting the corner like that is impressive. As long as he continues his upwards climb that should be enough to show Gable this is the place for him. |

I'm hearing Simley needs outside practice partners for him, cuz no one can touch him. He got massive too. That Sophomore class at Simley could be a great pipeline to Minnesota |

Saw Cashman at the dual, sporting MN colors. Gable sitting with incoming wrestlers and current wrestlers behind the bench as usual. Kirkvliet family in attendance. Whole Manville family, including Mason also took the dual in. He is PSU but still found it interesting. |

We need to really start controlling our emotions over the "team colors" that kids are wearing. That is like saying the kids are playing military game on Xbox - they must be going in the service! C'mon - kids in wrestling probably have 5-10 different shirts, hats, sweats from all different schools at any given time. And you can now buy stuff on the internet - this is not 1980! |

Here are the commitments according to Flo's big board of the top 100 Seniors in the country. Iowa - #1, 9, 51 Ok. St. - #3, 31 Cornell - #2, 4, 68, 81, 100 Penn St. - #5, 7 Nebraska - #10, 20, 85 Ohio St. - #6, 23 So, while the strongest programs in the country are clearly getting some high level studs to add to the stable, what amazed me is what some programs that are currently struggling have got committed. Here is the best example: Oklahoma - #28, 33, 41, 54, 56, 70, 89 Minnesota has #53 and #97 committed. My question is this -- how does Oklahoma which was not performing up to their standards under Cody and who fired him in the off season convince seven of the top 100 seniors to commit? Here's my answer. A lot of these really good kids are willing to commit to a big time program that has scholarship money available and can show them they are willing to move in a positive direction. There's your blueprint. Follow it and you'll get away from this purgatory situation you're currently in. Oklahoma brought in Lou Rosselli, Hunter Stieber, Gavin and Lightener. It's not like Oklahoma was some kind of juggernaut when this position opened up and yet a quality guy like Rosselli took it. It's probably no coincidence that you bring two of the guys most connected to USA Wrestling in the past five years and recruits want to commit. |

If you want the "Eggum stays" option, Northwestern is your place to look. They named Storniolo head coach after he spent a year as interim. He kept Beebe on staff and promoted him to head asst. They brought in Andrew Howe and Cody Brewer. What did that get them? They have only one kid on the Senior board: #92 (interim issue -- just like Eggum right now) BUT... they have the number 6, 10, 21, and 30 recruits off the Junior board. I realize those are just verbals but it's a helluva start to a future. I think Minnesota can go this direction too as long as Eggum is willing to reach out and add some diversity and star power to the staff. |

Key is to add some diversity to the coaching staff, this staff has been very gopher-centric for years. Who was the last PAID assistant that wasn't a former Gopher?Schwab? I think they had some volunteer assistants that were not former Gophers that also trained with and wrestled for MN Storm. |

I have some mixed feelings on this... 1.) Your on the D1 stage with that name it kind of comes with the territory... Yes some is over the top... 2.) There always seems to be someone giving him the excuse that he's banged up or not 100% well if that's the case then I'm gonna blame the coaches, quit running the kid out there! Why? Fans wanna see "effort" and yes I understand Jake is giving us effort but when your already a defensive wrestler and if your hurt and doing even less on offense, no one wants to see that! Fans wanna see guys going down swinging. The view point of everyone in the stands takes a much different look with his style. 3.) I think expectations were very high, I think he impressed as a freshman, exceeded lots of expectations, and now it appears to most that its plateaued and to some it even looks like regression... Now there are factors (he has been hurt, his style, weight class change, ect) and not everyone gets that... 4.) The "dud" losses. Its rough but he's really lost some tough ones to kids he should of handled and well when your the type to wrestle in all them close matches and give those kids opportunities at the end, these are gonna open the doors for the people to come out and criticize. I just wish there was more offense here, I really do and I think you would see a lot less "bashing" even with the "dud" losses, if your going down with what appears to be "swinging in the fight" fans in general are going to be more accepting. |

I agree we need to be more offensive. That was a reason Berg gave for choosing Penn State as well. |
