Hello All ...

One thing that perpetually confuses me is the return to the mat once a wrestler has been lifted off of my feet.

I have 'heard' that the only criteria is the controlling wrester's responsibility to return the other wrestler to the mat 'safely.'

If so, that would explain the wide disparity in interpretation in what seems to me an important safety point. To me, this is an area that might be a little more clear cut (as the full nelson)

Things I have seen and been confused about:

1) A referee only calling the dangerous move (and awarding a point) after the wrestler was clearly injured. In other words, it was the injury that triggered the call, not the move. This seems off. Was the move warranted dangerous or not? Then the other wrestler should be rewarded a point whether not an injury occurred.

2) A wider range of interpretation than on almost any other rule.

Is there any guidance given referees beyond "safely returned to the mat"?

If not, would this be welcome?

Some things I thought about that might qualify as clear criteria -- all from the position of both wrestlers on their feet, with one wrestler's feet elevated off the ground.

Point awarded to the other wrestler if:

1) controlling wrestler lands with full weight on the body of the other wrestler.
2) controlling wrestler lands shoulder forward into the body of the wrestler
3) controlling wrestler initiates a move that results in the other wrestler landing on his head

Thoughts?

Interestingly enough, I've also noticed that the call usually has something to do with the skill level of the guy being returned to the mat. I've seen two guys DQ'd for slams in the last couple years and in both cases, it was an experienced wrestler against a novice who didn't know how to protect himself. Top wrestlers routinely return each other to the mat which as much force as they can and keep right on wrestling. On the other hand, you need to be very careful with how you return a novice to the mat.

Personally, I don't think it should make a difference, but it is the reality of high school wrestling.

The last two years at the Rumble I've seen three slam calls that could have / did end the match. There was one really controversial match at the X last year where I thought it should have been called and wasn't.

On the other hand, a slam call was the difference in LCWM not making the state tournament last year. The DQ at 106 was for this. http://theguillotine.com/wp/2014-class-a-section-4-team-tournament/

The weekend at East Ridge there was a suplex in the finals where the point was awarded after it was clear there was an injury, not immediately following the throw.

I'm curious about the official rule. Is it really just "it is the wrestlers responsibility to return his opponent safely to the mat?"
