What are your thoughts on the USA Card price hike from $35 ($31 if bought through a club) to an across the board $40? And the change coming so close to wrestling season...

I was a little surprised with the increase when I went to renew - and I don't have first-hand knowledge of the discussions that led to the increase. But it's a slight increase in the overall scheme of things and the value received by purchasing that USA card is well worth the price on so many levels. I'm happy to support and grow wrestling through USAW!

When does their insurance kick in? Is it after the personal or after the school/facility. Just asking I really don't know.

I don't mind the small increase, but great question! When is the insurance used, at USA events only after primary insurance pays? I've just considered it a donation to USAW, which is ok. I've always wondered about the insurance part.

The insurance that comes with your wrestling card has two parts. The first part is basic medical insurance that covers injuries. It is secondary insurance so your primary (personal) pays first. After your primary insurance pays, then you pay the next $500 (deductible) and then you pay 20% of the rest up until the per injury maximum.

The second part of the insurance is liability insurance for volunteers, workers, organizers, and athletes who accidentally injure someone. This does not cover one wrestler hurting another wrestler in a match and it doesn't cover you if the act was intentional -- like hitting a competitor with a police baton in the kneecap (ie the Tonya Harding clause).

Regarding schools, I can't comment on what a specific school or high school program or club might have for insurance but facilities and event sponsors/organizers typically only have liability insurance cover them.

P.S. I found the actual terms here.

At first I thought this was a big jump and then I remembered 2 hockey players I know who were both paralyzed in accidents on the ice. USA hockey is the same as USA wrestling in terms of insurance coverage and if something like that ever happens, you will be more than thankful you have it. I am completely fine with the fee going for the few athletes that are seriously injured.

The process that happens is that if you file a claim of injury thru having your CURRENT USA card, it is processed thru their carrier, Health Special Risk Inc. They coordinate benefits with your primary carrier, and then pay 80% off the remaining bill(s). In our wrestler's case, they paid for the majority of 2 days in the ER, 2 more days in a hospital room, 4 days of Antibiotic drip, an orthopedic surgeon, and various other doctors and medications. Wrestling can bring injuries, but also concussions, skin issues, and unfortunately, an occasional bout of staph infection/MRSA. Buy the card, and dont practice or compete without it.

We buy my son's card and my coaching card every year. Ive never complained or thought it was too much. USAW is a great organization. Is the coverage for any time on the mat or only USA events or practices? My son had an injury in the high school room during the season a few years ago. We only used primary. Just curious. Thanks.

Reading the Mark Schultz book he says he paid 30 bucks 30 years ago, no problem with the increase.
