You might want to inform most of the teams there that it’s just JV. I saw more than a few varsity wrestlers last weekend in Hastings. |

No where in the rules does it state JV. The only stipulation is grades 7-9. Each school gets to set it's own rules for who goes and who does not. |

Let’s be honest. Lots of schools send their JV or JH kids during the regular season and then send as many 9th grade varsity guys as possible to the post season. |

As in life, wrestling isn't necessarily fair. My kid would make it to state if we lived in a different section of the state. He is on varsity but may not even make it to 9th grade state because of the great competition in our area (varsity and non-varsity wrestlers). I know some 9th graders who would love to compete in 9th grade league but their school chooses not to. I say let them all wrestle! |

I should be clear. I am not complaining at all about who chooses to go to 9th grade league and who does not. It is a great opportunity for a lot of kids to get good quality matches. My point was just that the winner of the state tournament is not the best in state. The great ones simply don't wrestle there. Wrestling is a unique sport where most teams cannot fill a varsity roster with 10-12 graders. Some 7-9 graders are able to compete, some are just filling spots. If my kid was competitive on varsity, I would want him helping the varsity team. That's just me. If it helps a program to send varsity wrestlers, good for them. By definition 9th grade league is JV, but I think the MSHSL is handling the match/event count exactly right. If you want to send varsity wrestlers, fine, but you might be costing them and your team varsity level wins and hardware. Edited by westernwrestlingfan, Jan 23 2018, 03:18 PM.

"By definition 9th grade league is JV" I don't see that written in the rules anywhere. JV can consist of anyone 7-12 grade. If we're going to allow 45 matches, and only 16 events, we are going to kill off dual meets in short order. |

I guess I consider Junior Varsity to be a broad term used to describe events that are lower than varsity. Clearly 9th grade league is lower than varsity, so it is Junior Varsity/JV. There are no rules that a varsity wrestler can't wrestle some JV as well as some varsity. . Edited by westernwrestlingfan, Jan 23 2018, 09:20 PM.

Well since I read in the other topic no one was talking about this tournament...and I was not in attendance nor did my kid wrestle 9th grade league at all. What was some of the standout kids that caught your eye anyone we should be on the lookout in the years to come ? I read the results but just looking for insight on the kids , many of whom I’ve personally never seen wrestle |
