Can a coach dispute a call? I'm assuming yes. Can he do it from his bench area, can he walk onto the mat almost in the circle while match is going on? Thanks. |

Coaches can dispute a call but they are only supposed to do it at the scorers table. Rule 7-5-2 states Coaches and other personnel are restricted to the bench/chairs while the clock is running and during normal out of bounds and resumption of wrestling. During this time the coach can walk behind the team bench to encourage wrestlers. The coach may approach the scorers table to request the match to be stopped to discuss the misapplication of the rule. The coach may move towards the mat only during a charged time-out or at the end of the match. If a coach questions a mis-applied rule at the scorers table and if he is wrong or is questioning the referees judgement then a warning shall be issued. Coaches think they should get a warning for arguing calls from their bench but technically that is considered unsportsmanlike conduct and a team point should be deducted. This is where we as referees don't always follow the rule. Too much leeway in regards to giving warnings in this situation vs. taking team points. Really hate to penalize all the kids by taking team point where often times a bench warning curtails the situation. |

That is how I remember it from when I was officiating. Just don't see it called much in SW MN. Thanks Rod |
