Rod, Last weekend at the BRAWL (youth tourney, certified refs). One of my wrestlers are getting rode and stood up(on both feet, no hands touching mat) riding wrestler stays on his knees and clasp around the waist. I asked the ref about the call, he said "if one wrestler is on he feet, its legal". Is that correct?? Thanks |

That is correct it is not locking hands in your example. For those that like to know the actual rule Rule 7-3 Art 3. Locking hands is interlocking or overlapping the hands fingers or arms around the opponent's body (with or without arm included) or both legs by a wrestler in the advantage position - unless the opponent has all the weight supported entirely by the feet or has lifted the opponent off the mat or the opponent has meet NF criteria. When returning opponent to the mat locking hands beyond reaction time is a technical violation. What isn't exactly true is "as long as 1 guy is on his feet". That is the part that is incorrect. If the offensive wrestler is standing and locks around the legs but the defensive wrestler is on the mat (think of a wheelbarrow situation). That would be locked hands as the defensive wrestler is still on the mat. Edited by WrestlingOfficial, Jan 27 2016, 01:58 PM.
