I am wondering why MN/USA doesn't use straight double elimination brackets for Freestyle and Greco when all the National Tournaments have made the switch? So much easier to follow and IMHO a lot more fair for the wrestlers.

I agree. A change is needed. Some very lopsided placing matches last weekend. The only thing you can feel confident in is first place.

The random draw is the biggest factor in the lopsided placing matches, but straight line is slightly "more" fair. Here are the stats on the two systems with 8 wrestlers:

The bigger issue is why the unnecessary complication? Straight line is simpler for wrestlers, coaches, fans (and tournament directors) to understand. Pairing officials are not required and it is easy to determine when and who you wrestle next.

On another note- when wrestlers and their families spend 100's of dollars to attend and you automatically get matched up with the 2 studs right away your tourney is over. At least normal bracketing losers wrestle losers making it more fair.

In line bracketing, the worst draw is the 1 and 3. Vertical paring, you can get the 1 and 2.

Brought this up a couple years ago. Why does MN/USA still uses this bracketing? So confusing, especially when you have 8+ wrestlers in a bracket. Does any other state still use these brackets?

I will tell you why I love vertical bracketing.

At larger tournaments where there are a lot of quality participants it allows for a great wrestler to drop one of his ten matches and still make the finals by beating the rest of the guys in his pool.
