Years ago MN used to send a ton of wrestlers to Vegas to Western Junior Regionals. Now they have UWW Juniors, kids and cadets as well. Any chance they try and get a bunch to go in the future? |

I was kind of wondering if anyone was planning to try get more Minnesota Cadets, Juniors to head out there next year. We had some guys go in 2006, 2007 and they had a blast. |

yes, those trips were great fun. Good groups of wrestlers, parents, and coaches... we were along for those same years, too. BUT- different times now, different Junior director, different group of coaches...other committments that many of the wrestlers are now involved in, Virgina Beach Nationals, etc....The tournament itself has jumped around a bit, as far as the date.....They include the Sr US Open along with it, in non-Olympic years. Which makes it a MONSTER of a tournament, now that they have added in kids divisions and folkstyle. . Its actually like, 8 tournaments all going on at the same time... I'd like to see Mn send a large group of kids again. I think it would work best however to just have smaller groups, with really good parental supervision and coaching for each handful ;) ......the site last year was the SouthPoint Convention Center, which seemed like it had a lot more for kids to do..bowling alley....movie theatre, etc...but many of the other adults liked it less, due to being 1/2 hour away from the strip and the other casino's.....what I liked about that site, was coming down the hotel elevator and being inside the wrestling venue in less than 5 minutes.... I think it is a combination of things that a group from Minnesota hasn't been going to Vegas recently. The biggest reason probably is that it was one or two individuals that organized that whole trip. It wasn't a MN/USA Wrestling organized trip. It will take a couple other people to step up and organize that themselves now. Some of the reasons that they probably stopped organizing it are that it is no longer an official Regional National qualifier so the top 4 placers don't secure spots at Fargo anymore. Senior Nationals haven't consistently been a part of it which always added to the fun of going. There are just too many other tournament options in the month leading up to it and the month following that have become more important. When it comes down to it, it just isn't the same trip opportunity that it used to be. |

Jeff, the Juniors division is called the Western Junior Regional- isnt that still considered a qualifier ? I thought it was....I alkso think as an organization,Mn/Usa puts more emphasis on getting kids qualified thru Northern Plains, and also sending kids to Cadet and Junior Duals, rather than Vegas.... its an awesome trip and tournament...But its also a huge responsibility, to get those kids out there and make sure theyre properly supervised and focused on wrestling. Which in my opinion, is more easily done, in smaller groups, with enough parents along.... B) Edited by Tiny Tornado, Apr 28 2016, 07:24 PM.

Looks like you're right. It is the Cadet portion that isn't a regional qualifier. We do encourage kids to qualify through Northern Plains but any regional qualifier works so if they can fit Vegas in their schedule, great. I kon we usually have a group or two go out to Kansas too for that qualifier. |
