Competitive Handshaking

When did this competition start to determine which wrestler could shake the most hands after the match? You would think the winners would be content with winning the match, but now it seems like they also want to burry their opponent in another competition by shaking every official, table worker, opposing coach, manager, and trainer's hand. Soon it will spread to the fans and concession workers.

I'm all for good sportsmanship, and if you respectfully shake your opponent's hand after a match, you've met the highest standard. Shaking everyone else's hand is just spreading the fungi and viruses you and your opponent have just shared.

At tournaments, it also drags the post match making it more difficult for coaches to get a quick word to their wrestler before running across the gym for another match.

Olympic styles have three man mechanics which reguire both athletes to shake each officials hand. I for one like it. Quit finding things to bitch about.

Yes, I know UWW implemented this rule to make sure everyone gets a hand shake. It makes for quite the spectacle when refs are dragging exhausted and dejected wrestlers to the opposite corners so they can perform their duty.

Thank you for your advice, but I don't intend to listen to it. I will offer you some advice. If you are uncomfortable with people bitching, don't spend time on forums.

I see both sides. On one end, it's good to show respect to the officials of your match. On the other, it seems like pageantry. I always tell our guys to hustle and shake hands so we can chat after the match. If I'm needed at another mat, I go find the opponent, shake his hand, and let the athlete know where to find me.

I get irritated by a lot of things. Handshaking isn't one of them, quite yet.

this is nothing new.....International wrestling at the Senior level has always done it. Well, at least ever since I've been attending. You shake hands with the mat official, then the other two officials. Big deal. Doesnt take that much time, IMO.

Every where else in the entire world....they shake everyone's hand!
Our Junior National Duals Team won the Rollie Hoover Team Sportsmanship
Award 8 times.......because we shook hands with everyone! Three Cultural exchange teams to Norway and Sweden shook hands with everyone,
So find something else to whine about!

Holly cow, they seriously have a handshaking award?!? Does the tournament have people on the mat counting the numbers for each team??

I have found that handshaking doesn't really correlate with sportsmanship. The kid that wins seems genuinely happy to shake everyone's hand. The kid that loses, not so much.

BTW: Eric is right, most of the responses have been downright stupid. Smarten up before any more posts.

Maybe you are right about it becoming too much but I was always taught to shake the opponent and his coach's hands. The reason being that they put time into that match too and they deserve that respect. I like this idea and even if it is sometimes forced, I believe it shows some level of class.

You may also be right about shaking hands not necessarily correlating with sportsmanship as well. But my kids will still do it whether they win or lose. Happy or sad while doing it I believe that it builds character and it shows how to be a good winner and a good loser.

It doesn't take long to do the right thing and in my opinion, if you truly love the sport you can learn to stand spending an extra couple of seconds watching the athletes display proper sportsmanship after.

Maybe they could ban excessive celebration, so instead of silly center mat back flips and acrobatics some athletes could spend that time shaking hands instead :P

Win or lose, shake your opponents hand before and after the match. In the case of a dual meet, shake the opposing coach's hand after the dual.

This post isn't about shaking the hand of the other competitor, or the coach.

It's about when in International style wrestling, at the upper levels, after the match you must shake hands with all 3 mat officials- the guy on the whistle, the mat chairman and the judge. I say it's not too much, and the rule should remain.
