I was thinking they were looking for a leg foul ? I'd have to see it again, hopefully in slow motion..... that challenge sure didn't turn out well for Jesse...... also too bad about the upset of Bayrmov. Really wanted to see both he and And have a shot at Bronze...... |

It's the tiniest of margins that would have gotten a Bisek into the semi's & Thielke into the back side of the bracket. Both heartbreaking.... |

Apparently, the challenge was that his 'gut' was locked below the waist. |

I really laughed when I saw they were using the little Rio stuffed mascot toy...... did someone at UWW forget to pack the red and blue cubes ? :P Edited by Tiny Tornado, Aug 14 2016, 12:52 PM.

Smith dropped a tough match today, led most of the way and controlled all the action on the feet. A lot of these heavyweight matches are decided in par terre and his height hurts him defending the gut. I just loved those arm spins he was breaking out, would have loved to have seen him win that first one. Provisor's match kind of went as expected. He just has too much trouble scoring... especially against larger opponents. Edited by JohnnyD, Aug 15 2016, 10:58 AM.

That gold medal get match was extremely entertaining. The Cuban went up 5-0 in the first what 20-30 seconds. The Turkish guy got a little feisty at the end. But the highlight was the Cubans celebration by tossing his coach. When I get some time I will have to check out the earlier round matches but NBCSN is doing a nice job of covering the gold medal matches so far. |

Why did Robby go down in par terre? His opponent did nothing nothing. The ref decided that match in my mind |

It seems as though the ref's call the guy leading for passivity & put them down much more often whether or not they are doing the work (sometimes it seems like the guy losing is just waiting for that from the ref & not really working to score). |

The ref in GR 66 just stole the gold medal from the Armenian & gave it to the Serbian. I've watched that official assert himself as a match judge in previous matches & apparently he felt he needed to control who won the gold. That was terrible. |

They both knew a passivity was going to be called. Last one to score wins. Those are the rules right now. ect... It isn't a great way to decide such an important match. I wasn't thrilled with the ending either But on the other side this year's Greco finals have been a lot more enjoyable to watch. The current rules stress action in the middle of the mat for the entire match. It has resulted in points being scored in an extremely difficult discipline to score points in. The rules aren't perfect but they are way better than they were 4 years ago! |

keep your head up, don't back up, keep attempting to improve position, and convince the ref YOU are the one working harder, or you risk being the one put down in par terre....... NOBODY wants to go back to 3 periods/best 2 out of 3/ball grabs, etc.... Still not perfect- but much better...... |

Excellent first match from Augello (7-0). Very smart offense and very composed for a 21-year old in her first Olympics. She gets the 3x World Champ from Japan next. Nothing to lose! Giver her hell Haley. |

As I watched the match, I kept saying that Robby was going to get dinged any second. Based on how Greco officials call matches it had to have been obvious that he needed to try something desperate in order to avoid being put in par terre. I love watching Robby Smith wrestle and was really cheering for him, but he had to know the position he was in (as well as his coaches). |

Augello wrestled an excellent match against the 3x world champ. The final score doesn't show it, but at one point with about two minutes to go, it was her match. She was up 2-1 and had top position. A turn there really would have put her in a good spot but she slipped underneath and fell into a legal lace. But man..... she wrestled very well! Chances are she will get a shot in repechage to come back for a Bronze. Would be phenomenal for her to medal. Edited by JohnnyD, Aug 17 2016, 09:53 AM.

Checking in with the morning report... Maroulis played it close to the vest with her tech in the first round. Was in control. Gray was aggressive looking for points from the start and rolled to the fall. Total dominance. Looking poised for Gold. Pirozhkova jumped out to an early lead with a TD but then seemed to gas giving up multiple takedowns and the lead. However she caught the Bulgarian in a crotch throw situation late and ran up 4 consecutive turns, then just held on for the victory. (10-7) 3-0 in the opening round for Team USA. Maroulis downs world #4 Zhong of China with a 10-0 tech highlighted by one of the more graceful inside trips you'll see. Onto the quarters where she will face Jong of North Korea, who has looked very tough. Will be on Mat B shortly... |

Wow, great match. Down 4-1 with under two minutes Maroulis come back and with two TD's going ahead with about 15 seconds left. Gritty performance. The Korean was game. Onto the semi-finals where she will face the world #2 from Sweden. Edited by JohnnyD, Aug 18 2016, 09:19 AM.

Pirozhkova just up-ended the 2015 world champ 3-2 and she's also in the semis. Thats is a big upset, and sets her up for a winnable semi-finals match against Belarus Team USA now 6-0 on the day. Edited by JohnnyD, Aug 18 2016, 09:22 AM.

Olympic wrestling is madness. Upsets go both ways I suppose. She will have shot in repechage if the woman from Belarus makes the finals (she looked good) Edited by JohnnyD, Aug 18 2016, 09:45 AM.
